Remarks by President Biden on the American Jobs Plan

“And across America, there are more than 45- — hear me now — 45,000 bridges that are structurally deficient. Structurally deficient. Every day, Americans cross these bridges 178 million times.”

“We rank eighth in the world in terms of our infrastructure. We used to be the leader in the world.
All told, those delays cost our country — according to economists — an estimated $160 billion a year in waste — extra fuel, extra time, and the like. And that’s due to congestion. And folks in Louisiana know, there are much greater threats than just congestion. When the road or the bridge is washed out, or when it can’t stand up to a hurricane, people can’t get to their jobs, can’t get to their schools. Families can’t get to the hospitals safely.
This is about creating jobs and also saving lives.”

“Nearly 90 percent of all the infrastructure jobs that this is going to create won’t require a college degree. Seventy-five percent of them won’t even require an associate’s degree. These are jobs that can’t be outsourced. Can’t be outsourced…”

“The American Jobs Plan is a blue-collar blueprint to rebuild America. A blue-collar blueprint to rebuild America, to supercharge our economy so we can move goods, get to work, become more competitive around the world.
You know, it will shorten our commutes to give us back the lost time with our families, to make our commutes safer, save lives. All told, the American Jobs Plan is going to modernize 20,000 miles of highways and roads.
It will fix the nation’s 10 most economically significant bridges that require replacement — they’re just not safe anymore, which this bridge could be one of them — and repairs 10,000 bridges that desperately need to be upgraded. Bridges that get kids to school, people to market.”

“And, you know, when you build better roads or extend the train line over to the next town or install reliable, high-speed Internet, it sparks new life and investment in communities. It gives people hope.”

For two or three weeks, I begged and encouraged our granddaughter to watch Waffles and Mochi. Finally, last week when she didn’t feel good and wanted to lie on the couch and watch tv, I said, “Only if it is something educational. How about trying out Waffles and Mochi”? The rest is history. Now, she watches it every day and is learning so much. Whatever food is the focus, there’s always more questions from Aliya so we end up Googling and finding the answer and learning more things. Thank you, Michelle Obama. You are helping us with homeschooling. 🙂

Brian Mann, NPR, to Chris Hayes:

Elise Stefanik doing a one-eighty…”right at the start, she did something interesting. She claimed that her hometown was a small community called Willsboro, New York. It is a big part of her opening political message. I’m from here. And we went to Willsboro and nobody knew who she was. She wasn’t from Willsboro.
It was a part of her backstory, her identity that didn’t match the facts.”

Letting go of old loyalties…”And the number of people who she was closely linked to at the beginning, people like Bill Kristol, people like Paul Ryan, people like Mitt Romney, it`s — there`s so much daylight now between where she is today with Donald Trump and where they are, it’s really hard to recognize her.”

    Speaker Pelosi:
Statement on Implementation of Democrats’ Restaurant Revitalization Fund

“In just a few short days, the landmark Restaurant Revitalization Fund developed by House Democrats and signed into law as part of the American Rescue Plan has already drawn more than 186,000 applications – more than half from restaurants owned by women, veterans or socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. This progress is a great credit to Democrats’ tireless work to outreach and engagement to ensure that vulnerable communities take full advantage of the resources available to them.

“Thanks to the leadership of President Biden and Congressional Democrats, the Main Street businesses essential to the economic success and vitality of America’s communities are getting the relief they need to reopen, rehire and thrive. Meanwhile, every Republican in Congress voted against helping our restaurants survive this crisis. “

    “Richard Wright’s Novel About Racist Police Violence Was Rejected in 1941;
    It Has Just Been Published”

“Nearly 80 years ago, Richard Wright became one of the most famous Black writers in the United States
with the publication of “Native Son,” a novel whose searing critique of systemic racism
made it a best-seller and inspired a generation of Black writers. In 1941,
Wright wrote a new novel titled “The Man Who Lived Underground,” but publishers refused to release it,
in part because the book was filled with graphic descriptions of police brutality
by white officers against a Black man.

His manuscript was largely forgotten until his daughter Julia Wright unearthed it at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University. “The Man Who Lived Underground” was not published in the 1940s because white publishers did not want to highlight “white supremacist police violence upon a Black man because it was too close to home,” says Julia Wright. “It’s a bit like lifting the stone and not wanting the worms, the racist worms underneath, to be seen.””
