I keep waiting for RWNJs (who have nothing else) to mention something like Joe’s in for a kickback from Amtrak or whatever. Like if he supports assistance to farmers, it’s because “he likes to eat.” Ugh.

modi and his thugs lost big time today. They threw the kitchen sink and every other thing they could at a single lady and she kicked them in their collective nads by winning 2/3rd of the seats in her state. In my state, the opposition party beat him and the ruling party he allied with by 2 to 1. For all their arm twisting and throwing around money, bjp got just 2 seats so far in my state, that too because the candies were defectors and won on their own personal popularity.

A good read on modi’s loss, horrible governance and ugly politics.

“And that’s the point. For Modi and his cohorts only one thing matters — winning elections at any and all cost.

Towards this end they are willing to throw all norms — decency, humanity, politics to the wind.”

Where have we heard that before? it’s the same playbook for the fucking rw thugs everywhere.

      More from that piece

And this is where Mamata Banerjee’s rout of the BJP is important.

The pandemic may have had a minimal reason behind her tremendous electoral win, and all to do with her direct appeal to the electorate as well as disgust at the way she was singled out, hectored, and pilloried by the entire rank and file of BJP leaders brought in from outside.

But the timing of her win is what makes it crucial.

Hitherto Indians had resigned themselves to Modi’s misrule in the absence of someone who can fight him. TINA was his strength.

Yes, other strong men have stopped Modi and his hordes in states before, but none of them with a footprint or battle cry to shake up New Delhi.

But over the last few weeks, a tired, distressed, defeated population has been watching how Mamata has fought off Modi and his army single-handedly, dealing them a blow like they’ve never have been dealt before.

Bengal has shown what it thinks today; will India follow suit tomorrow?

As always and as everywhere, the rw thugs always overreach and get burned.

Football clubs, players, athletes and a number of sporting bodies have begun a four-day boycott of social media in an attempt to tackle abuse and discrimination on their platforms.

It began at 15:00 BST on Friday and will end on Monday at at 23:59 BST.

The “show of solidarity against online abuse” hopes to encourage companies to take a stronger stance against racist and sexist abuse by users.

Rugby union, cricket and rugby league have also joined the protest.

    /

Individuals and football clubs have condemned the abuse, and it has been decided that collective action is the best way to bring about change.

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

    • May 3, 2021 at 9:58 am

My hope is that one day we won’t have to hyphenate our heritage in America. That is, Native-American, African-American, Asian-American, Mexican-American, Italian-American, Polish-American, and so on. Those hyphens only serve the purpose of division. And they’ve surely served that purpose well for 400 years. Divide & conquer! One day, my wish, is that we’ll simply be American, no hyphens. Hope am still present to witness that change! šŸŒˆšŸ’ž

rw thugs are as classy as everywhere

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Babul Supriyo who lost from Tollyganj against Trinamool’s Aroop Biswas posted a rant against Mamata Banerjee saying that he will not congratulate her as Bengal people did a ‘historic mistake’ by not giving Bharatiya Janata Party a chance.

    The post was later deleted.

In a short Facebook post Supriyo lashed out at party chief Mamata Banerjee, whom he labelled a “cruel lady”.

“Neither will I congratulate Mamata Banerjee… nor do I wish to say I ‘respect’ the people’s verdict… sincerely think people of Bengal made a historic mistake by not giving BJP a chance… by electing this corrupt, incapable,
dishonest government and a cruel lady back to power,” he ranted.

    “Montana, Kansas, and Arkansas
enter the arms race to criminalize protest”
“The Republican push to criminalize pipeline protests is expanding beyond fossil fuel-producing states.”

“It was April 1, and Jestin Dupree had driven more than 400 miles from the Fort Peck Indian Reservation
in northeastern Montana to the state’s capital, Helena, to testify against legislation that could be used to jail environmental protesters. For years, his tribe had been protesting the Keystone XL pipeline, which was to cross the Missouri River, their main source of water. Their efforts seemed to be vindicated when the project was cancelled by President Joe Biden during his first day in office.

    Montana’s new legislation, however,
    would allow environmental protesters
to be jailed for up to 18 months
if they obstruct operations at oil and gas facilities —
and up to 30 years if they damage equipment.

It seemed to be a direct rebuke to the Indigenous activism
that had helped stop Keystone XL.”

Mr Modi has often talked about his “special bond” with the river Ganges, the ancient city of Varanasi, and the city’s people. But as the virus has ravaged the city and the medical infrastructure collapsed, Mr Modi has stayed clear of his constituency.

Residents have watched as their MP made 17 trips to the key political state of West Bengal between February and April, to campaign for the assembly elections there, which he lost badly on the weekend.

An angry restaurant owner described Mr Modi’s review meeting to discuss the Covid crisis in Varanasi on 17 April – a day before the village council elections – as a “farce”.

“The prime minister and the chief minister have gone into hiding, abandoning Varanasi and its people to their own fate,” the restaurant owner said. “The local BJP leaders are in hiding too. They have switched off their phones. This is the time people need them to help with a hospital bed or an oxygen cylinder but it’s total anarchy here. People are so angry.”

A farmer in Belgium has caused a stir after inadvertently redrawing the country’s border with France.

A local history enthusiast was walking in the forest when he noticed the stone marking the boundary between the two countries had moved 2.29m (7.5ft).

The Belgian farmer, apparently annoyed by the stone in his tractor’s path, had moved it inside French territory.

Instead of causing international uproar, the incident has been met with smiles on both sides of the border.

“He made Belgium bigger and France smaller, it’s not a good idea,” David Lavaux, mayor of the Belgian village of Erquelinnes, told French TV channel TF1. That sort of move caused a headache between private landowners, he pointed out, let alone neighbouring states.

    //

Local Belgian authorities plan to contact the farmer to ask him to return the stone to its original location. If that does not happen the case could end up at the Belgian foreign ministry, which would have to summon a Franco-Belgian border commission, dormant since 1930.

Mr Lavaux noted that the farmer could also face criminal charges if he failed to comply.
