Joy Reid to Jelani Cobb (New Yorker):

“You know Jelani, we go through these killings by police of black folks,
Michael Brown, the officer was acquitted. Eric Garner, officer was acquitted. Tamir Rice, no charges. Walter Scott, the officer was ultimately convicted but only because the feds came for him. It was a hung jury in the local case. Freddie Gray, there were charges but the prosecution was unsuccessful. That was Marilyn Mosby, who tried to do something about that. Philando Castile, the officer was acquitted. Stephon Clark, Botham Jean, officer was convicted. No charges in the case of Elijah McClain. We could go on and on. Breonna Taylor, remember that infamous no charge by that African-American attorney general. Daunte Wright, officer charged.
The track record is so bad that I wonder how much cynicism we can even bring to the fact that there were charges. That doesn’t seem like it’s comforting at least to me. When you talk to people on the ground there, are the charges themselves in any way comforting?”

    Jelani Cobb:
“Well do you know what case people are talking about here? They’re talking about Mohammed Noor.
That is the police officer, the African-American police officer, a person of color, who shot fatally Justine Damond who is a blond white woman in Minneapolis. He was charged with third-degree homicide and he was convicted. And so there was the anticipation that if you’re making a parallel, that there might be a third degree homicide charge here. So when that charge came down, I raised an eyebrow.
And so quite frankly, I think that this is not going to do much to take the edge off of — where people are.
They’ve been talking about the only instance of this state…in the state of Minnesota, the only person who was convicted was the black cop.”

“A wave of anti-transgender bills across the country
would ban health care providers from offering gender-affirming care to minors. But a smaller number are targeting parents who support their transgender kids’ desire to transition, levying punishments that critics say
    could range from jail time
to having their children taken away.

A bill heard in committee in the Texas Senate on Monday would redefine child abuse to include administering, supplying or consenting to provide puberty suppression drugs, hormone replacement therapy, or surgical or medical procedures to anyone under 18 “for the purpose of gender transitioning or gender reassignment.”

The measure would make such acts a felony…
although it carves out an exception for surgical procedures for intersex children.”

    • April 16, 2021 at 10:34 am

Parents and doctors keep wrongly making decisions for intersex children and even babies. That is something each person must decide for themselves. As we know there is a wide variation of being human.
YET THAT is the only kind of ‘surgery’ GOP monsters will allow!
—Parents of trans youth not only being threatened by jail time, but also by their child being taken away from them.

  12. April 16, 2021 at 10:50 am

GOP clinging to old out-of-date inaccurate beliefs, ignoring the science, promoting hate for their voting base.
Officials like Rand Paul mouthing the GOP talking point that trans youth are “too young to know” they are trans.
    Um, they know.

Fact: Trans youth do not get puberty blocking hormones until thoroughly, thoroughly assessed.
Rules are state by state, but there’s a YEAR long process of living in correct gender and years of counseling before that until surgery is even possible. Lots of different kinds of surgery (one is GCS).

n.b. Having hormone therapy means you don’t need e.g. facial feminization surgery later on.
Male faces are more robust, bigger chin and brow, smaller cheek bones, hair.
Girls get all of this without puberty blockers.

(Statistically speaking, some members of Congress certainly have LGBTQ offspring)

“Times Reporter Escapes Taliban After 7 Months” (NYT: June 20, 2009)
In Nov 2008: “David Rohde and his 2 Afghan colleagues, a fellow journalist and a driver were kidnapped outside of Kabul. They were held by the Taliban for 7 months and ten days, before Rohde and his journalist colleagues finally figured out a way to escape and flee into the night”. David wrote his story in a 6-part series for the Times.

NYT: “A Rope and a Prayer”
    by David Rohde
    October 21 2009

“I STOOD in the bathroom of the Taliban compound and waited for my colleague to appear in the courtyard so we could make our escape. My heart pounded. A three-foot-tall swamp cooler an antiquated version of an air-conditioner roared in the yard a few feet in front of me. I feared that the guards who were holding us hostage might wake up and stop us. I feared even more that our captivity would drag on for years.

It was 1 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, in Miram Shah, the capital of the North Waziristan tribal agency in Pakistan. After seven months and 10 days in Taliban captivity, I had come to a decision with Tahir Luddin, the Afghan journalist I had been kidnapped with, to try to make a run for it….”

Sanctions Announcement Completes Circle Between Trump Camp And Russian Intel”
“Rachel Maddow highlights a passage from the Treasury Department announcement of new sanctions against Russia that says Paul Manafort associate Konstantin Kilimnik delivered polling and campaign strategy information to Russian intelligence. Previously it was known that Manafort gave such materials to Kilimnik, but not what Kilimnik had done with them. Also previously known was that Russian intelligence interfered in the 2016 election to boost the Trump campaign.”
