We are shaken by the violence in our city that has left 8 ppl dead, including members of the Asian American community. We are gathering info about what happened & the needs of directly impacted are. Now is the time to hold the victims & their families in our hearts & with light pic.twitter.com/Hft5H7IZNW

I want to know their names, who and what they loved, the people they had waiting for them at home, everything they hoped for. I want to know the fabric of their days and the contexts of their lives.

"Racism against AAPI Americans is not new.
— Dr. Michelle Au (@AuforGA) March 15, 2021
Otherization of AAPI Americans is not new.
But the motto of the United States is E Pluribus Unum: 'Out of many, one.'
Asian-Americans are part of our country’s plurality.
We are some of the many, and we’re part of that one."#gapol pic.twitter.com/o2lzNb4iIy
In less than 48 hours, we had a historic Asian Oscar moment with multiple firsts in 93 years—then a mass shooting targeting 3 Asian-owned businesses. This is how terrorism works—you’re not allowed to feel safe, accepted, or valued. We can resist. Take up space. Make noise.
— Min Jin Lee (@minjinlee11) March 17, 2021
Last night's shooting & the appalling rise of anti-Asian violence stem frm a sick society where nationalism has again been stoked & normalized. Anti-Black & anti-Asian racism & violence run in tandem in the U.S. Both grps were brought here for labor but never meant to be citizens
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
Even as this country was recruiting Chinese men to come do the labor white workers would not, they barred Chinese women from entering the U.S. in order to ensure the men would not settle and start families in America.
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
Then this nation passed the Chinese Exclusion Act to prohibit Chinese laborers from immigrating to the U.S. altogether. This nation's most egregious racist laws and racist Supreme Court rulings targeted Black and Chinese people because of the believe both were unassimilable.
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
We had to get an amendment to the Constitution to guarantee Black Americans citizenship in their own country, and Chinese Americans had to take a case all the way to the Supreme Court in order to have their own citizenship recognized. https://t.co/7qY7M4f6ln
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
If you look at racial real estate covenants -- provisions placed on homes that restricted ownership by race -- they almost always restricted two races: Black and Asian.
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
And, of course, during World War II, Japanese Americans were placed in internment camps but German Americans were not. And German prisoners of war were allowed to eat in restaurants in the American South that Black Americans soldiers home on leave were barred from.
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
Because of the Chinese Exclusion Act and explicitly racist immigration policy, the Asian population in the United States stayed relatively low until after the Civil Rights Movement and then we saw large numbers entering the U.S.
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
And what has followed -- in reaction to the Civil Rights Movement and Black demands to dismantle white supremacy -- has been an enduring an attempt to use Asian immigrants and Asian Americans as a wedge against Black Americans.
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
But the truth is that Asian Americans are only held up as a model to justify inequality and injustice visited upon Black Americans, but are seen by many white Americans as a problem and forever foreign otherwise. In other words, our struggles have always been tied together.
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
I stand with my Asian-American brothers and sisters, just as so many of you have stood with us. I grieve. We must own all of this history -- ALL OF IT -- and determine to fight for a truly multiracial democracy where we all can be free.
— Ida Bae Wells (@nhannahjones) March 17, 2021
The reported shootings of Asian American women on Tuesday in Atlanta is an unspeakable tragedy – for the families of the victims first and foremost, but also for the AAPI community — which has been reeling from high levels of racial discrimination. https://t.co/rBVPnrEBps

Thank you for this thread Nerdy!
May those lost rest in peace. 🙏🏾
There will be rest for those who remain until justice is done and the hate that fueled this heinous act is rooted out. 😔
My heart is so heavy.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
The young white ahole who murdered these people reminds me of Dylan Roof who murdered the Charleston 9.
My Senator will be speaking on the floor of the Senate in just few minutes.
I love how they support each other.
Live Now!
Love both of your Senators!
Me too! ❤️
Deep gassho to the sacred lives lost in the Asian community and their families. What are their stories?
Don’t we know that diversity is like a bouquet of flowers? We’re expressions of the one in this world, yet the way we look and the customs into which we’re born are used to divide us. We are equal absolutely like in a mirror, so let’s open up. Terrorism, all guns and all violence are doomed to fail. Om Peace across this fledgling country.
…expressions of the one (none)
imo rather….we’re apparent expressions in the play of consciousness.
{means the world to be able to speak about things that matter so much to me (even if no-one else) and even revise later on, what a gift – thanks TOD.}
Great speech by Senator Warnock. Everyone should take the time to listen.
So damn cute!
Just an observation…but did we lose all the guys around here?
Well, I was wondering few days ago where amk went?! Don commented couple nights ago, but you are correct. The guys seems to have departed our presence. ??????
Speak of the devil and he shall appear.
I retired December 31, 2020, I worked as a Federal Correctional Officer at several prisons and my title was Utility Systems Operator Supervisor/ Power Plant Supervisor. After I retired I needed some time to get my legs up under me because once you retire everything changes. All of the stresses and deadlines disappear and you have to look for a purpose and a reason to get out of bed in the morning, for a while I didn’t have a purpose or a reason to get out of bed and I fell into a funk for a while. There are a million books out there on how to land a job, but there are only a few books on how to retire. And when I walked out of the prison on the last day it was a jolt, once you retire from working at a prison you are no longer a part of something. There are no sweet goodbyes, there are no “stop by and hang out.” There is only open up gate four, and once you walk out that’s it, it is not a smooth landing or transition. One day you’re talking to murderers and the next day you’re on your own to figure out the rest of your life. For over 20 years I’ve worked in this type of distorted or unnatural environment, and now it’s over. Anyway I’m slowing coming up out of this minor funk I was in.
Hey Don!
It’s always so good to hear from you! Man, you have served our country for 20 years in an extremely tough environment. That in itself is quite an achievement to be proud of! 👑👏🏾
I’m glad to hear you’re coming out the funk.
I’m not necessarily the best advisor for your situation, but I strongly suspect running toward the things that feed your soul – whether it’s art, music, family, religion, seeing the world (near or far), making things, learning things, teaching or helping others – will put you on the right path. Also lots of hugs, when it’s safe, of course. ☺️
It may take some time, but hopefully you’ll soon be on your way to finding joy and purpose in your well-deserved retirement. Congratulations! Keep updating us on how it’s going. You’d be surprised how just sharing helps you and others.
Sending you and yours love. – D ❤️
Blessings to you Don…May God be with you as you find a new destination and a path forward
Well, we’re glad that you’re still here with us. I remember you saying that you were going to retire…or at least talking about that here. I can’t imagine how that feels, but now you can find your passion and just do it. Try something new and not have to ask for time off work to do it. I’m happy for you, but I certainly understand your new discombobulation. Hope that things get easier daily….and you always have us:)
I think Bobfr changed his name, posted, then haven’t seen him since. But he could be on other social media. Miss him too. Including AMK. So happy to see Don back! 💞

Missouri Dad Testifies Against Trans Youth Athlete Ban
“As a parent the one thing we cannot do…is silence our child’s spirit.”
“Brandon Boulware, father of a transgender daughter, urged Missouri lawmakers to stop discriminating against trans youth while testifying in a hearing about trans youth athlete ban HJR 53.
Parents, coaches, doctors, and student athletes are all coming together to say that trans people belong everywhere. Trans girls are girls, and they shouldn’t be barred from participating in sports.”
—WOW, WOW.
—This Dad had a huge realization about his daughter. Pls listen.
So glad you found this. I wanted to post it but lost track of the tweet where I saw it. I’m crying after watching it again. 😭
RAW…no longer shocked….I am hopeful that we will be strategizing ways of running agaisnt these folks…what do their voter believe….is the GOP base as deplorabe as the House GOP is
I’m surprised that the Republicans haven’t requested a rule that says you can vote anonymously on the floor of the house. But no, they aren’t ashamed at all of the votes that they cast.
I wonder if Republican voters are really as corrupt as the legislators that represent them
To knowingly vote for a politician that will vote for a bill that will restrict my right to vote might not be corrupt in a legal sense, but it certainly is morally corrupt.
Nailed it, Don!
This is something for the MSM to discuss 24/7. All of these folks who voted against this Act need to be called out!!!
Found one happy story! And Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all!
Aww! 😭

“Systematic oppression in the form of systematic erasure…the API narrative has been erased.
It is incredibly important that people begin to include API within their framework of what it means to be an American.” (Yamm)
KIMMY YAMM:
“A lot of the stereotype surrounding Asian women.
‘Docile, weak, subservient’ really plays into it because it makes Asian women appear like we are easier,
or more vulnerable targets…given how Asian women are hyper-sexualized, fetishized and sexualized in this country. And the specific type of racialised sexism that we deal with – it is very difficult to divorce race from this conversation. We can look back to history and as early as our initial entry in this country to see where this came from. One of the first exclusionary laws, the Page Act, barred Asian women from coming into the country on grounds that they were deemed ‘morally corrupt’. A lot of these stereotypes – we’re ‘sexually deviant’,
we’re ‘geishas”, we’re ‘slay dragon ladies’, they still persist to this day. And that can’t be ignored in this conversation.”
The ‘Yellow Peril’ paradigm:
“The sinologist Wing-Fai Leung explained the fantastic origins of the term and the racialist ideology:
“The phrase yellow peril (sometimes yellow terror or yellow specter) . . . blends Western anxieties about sex, racist fears of the alien Other, and the Spenglerian belief that the West will become outnumbered and enslaved by the East.”
The academic Gina Marchetti identified the psycho-cultural fear of East Asians as “rooted in medieval fears of Genghis Khan and the Mongol invasions of Europe [1236–1291], the Yellow Peril combines racist terror of alien cultures, sexual anxieties, and the belief that the West will be overpowered and enveloped, by the irresistible, dark, occult forces of the East.”

(fill in blank…….)
The Bad Day excuse reinforces my claim that humans are emotional and irrational (clearly) and fallible.
And should never ever have a gun, which is DESIGNED to kill. One day in a more honest world it will be so. Will never forget the story about the waitress who served this guy every day with coffee, and one day
he got out of bed on the wrong side…and shot her dead.
There is simply no way that this guy can remain Sheriff, I don’t see how he makes it past this weekend.

UNITED NATIONS
“U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris told the U.N.’s premiere global body fighting for gender equality that “the status of women is the status of democracy” and the Biden administration will work to improve both….
Harris said in a virtual speech to the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women’s annual meeting that the exclusion of women in decision-making — its focus this year — is “a marker of a flawed democracy,” stressing that their participation “strengthens democracy.”
But she warned that democracy is “increasingly under great strain,” with “a troubling decline in freedom around the globe” over the past 15 years, and experts saying the past year “was the worst on record for the global deterioration of democracy and freedom.”
The Biden administration is committed to upholding “the democratic values” in the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights, Harris said, “and we firmly believe that, when we work together globally, we can achieve the vision within it.”
