“Representative Deb Haaland of New Mexico made history on Monday when the Senate confirmed her as President Biden’s secretary of the Interior, making her the first Native American to lead a cabinet agency.
Ms. Haaland in 2018 became one of the first two Native American women elected to the House.
But her new position is particularly redolent of history because the department she now leads has spent much of its history abusing or neglecting America’s Indigenous people.
Beyond the Interior Department’s responsibility for the well-being of the nation’s 1.9 million Native people,
it oversees about 500 million acres of public land, federal waters off the United States coastline, a huge system of dams and reservoirs across the Western United States and the protection of thousands of endangered species.”
An Indigenous woman of the Laguna Pueblo tribe of NM has become the 54th US Secretary of the Interior. Sec Haaland will oversee the management & conservation of our federal lands & natural resources—replacing an oil lobbyist.

Horror, outrage and incredible sadness grips Atlanta after a hate-fueled massacre targets the Asian-American community. 💔
Tonight, we hold close to our hearts Georgia’s AAPI community, which was targeted in a spree of Metro Atlanta shootings. As we await more details on these tragic events, we must commit to overcoming xenophobia and racism. #gapol
The senseless attacks against my Asian sisters and brothers must stop! This is a national problem. 8 killed, 1 injured in shootings at 3 spas in metro Atlanta; suspect in custody https://t.co/kOaMPgmkAh
The racist violence carried out in Atlanta tonight against the Asian American community is horrifying. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We are committed to fighting the rise of xenophobia and hate crimes against Asian Americans.
My heart aches for those lost in this hateful act of violence. May those who loved them be wrapped in love by all of #Atlanta. pic.twitter.com/f398JvqH8h

Last week @JulianCastro talked with the founder of Stop AAPI hate about the rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans. It’s worth a listen. https://t.co/3mqelpbVL8
“There’s a deliberate media movement underway to not use the clear, accurate language to describe Republican efforts to suppress the vote, just like there was a deliberate media movement to not accurately describe Trump as a "liar" for four years.”
Even as we’ve battled the pandemic, we’ve continued to neglect the longer-lasting epidemic of gun violence in America. Although the shooter’s motive is not yet clear, the identity of the victims underscores an alarming rise in anti-Asian violence that must end.
Yesterday's shootings are another tragic reminder that we have far more work to do to put in place commonsense gun safety laws and root out the pervasive patterns of hatred and violence in our society.
Michelle and I pray for the victims, their families, everyone grieving these needless and devastating killings—and we urge meaningful action that will save lives.
Last night's shooting & the appalling rise of anti-Asian violence stem frm a sick society where nationalism has again been stoked & normalized. Anti-Black & anti-Asian racism & violence run in tandem in the U.S. Both grps were brought here for labor but never meant to be citizens
Six Asian American women were killed in Atlanta today. We're still learning about the motive. However, you should know this: most racist attacks against Asian Americans this past year have targeted women, and Asian American women are on edge. (1/15)
— Dr. Melissa May Borja (@MelissaMayBorja) March 17, 2021
@StopAAPIHate (an organization with which I am an affiliated researcher) found that 68% of the attacks on Asian Americans in the past year targeted AAPI women. (2/15) https://t.co/YsxdOmOlJn
— Dr. Melissa May Borja (@MelissaMayBorja) March 17, 2021
Our hearts are with the families of the AAPI women slain yesterday. Hatred is infectious and cumulative – it begins w pejoratives about race and evolves into acts of unspeakable violence. We must do more than condemn. Our responsibility is to protect and defend. By word and deed.
