Stanley Dunlap, Georgia Recorder, following efforts to roll back Georgia voting rights,
speaking with Rachel Maddow:
Maddow:
âIs this a foregone conclusion in Georgia at this point, or are enough Republicans potentially getting cold feet here, that despite their control of state government, some of these things may not survive to final passage?â
Dunlap:
âThatâs the million dollar question. So today was crossover day and it was the last chance for bills from one chamber to pass over to the other. What we saw today in the Senate was the sweeping bill that would eliminate the No-Excuse valid law thatâs been in place since 2005. Last year 1.3 million Georgians used that to vote.
And that moves over to the House. Whether that will gain any traction will kind of depend on the House leaders. House Speaker David Ralston – who is also a Republican – has spoken out against that. And we’ve also seen that the sweeping bill has moved through the House and now is over to the Senate. It includes some restrictions, but it does not go as far as eliminating No-Excuse Absentee law. And so it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out once it gets into the House committees pretty soon.â
Maddow:
âShould we read anything into that somewhat dramatic decision today when the Lieutenant Governor basically handed off the gavel and said that he wouldn’t preside over passing this legislation, in particular to rescind absentee voting access? Should we read anything into that? Or was that a personal more than political matter?â
Dunlap:
âNo. I think this is something that – Lieutenant Governor Duncan has been one of the first Republicans who spoke out against the widespread fraud claims shortly after the election. And said it’s time to move past that, that it’s been a secure election. And they called for some changes that have had some controversy with Democrats, as far as an absentee ID requirement that would kind of replace the signature verification.
But I don’t think that was a political game necessarily from Duncan. I think this is something that heâs spoken out againstâŚâ
Maddow:
âWe are seeing Black athletes and Black artists, and it seems like increasingly the business community specifically in Atlanta but also perhaps more broadly in Georgia, starting to take an interest here. And starting to make this a point of national discussion, trying to align themselves with the forces that are fighting against these Voter rights rollbacks. Is that having any effect, or how do you expect that to evolve as this all comes to a head?â
Dunlap:
âI think any time you have business communities, sometimes people will call out celebrities for trying to push their weight around to have influence. We saw major dollars that will help improve voter registration, help get people out there encouraging them to vote. And so I do think it does have significance. And we saw the Atlanta Chamber put out a statement todayâŚAnd so I think when you have the Georgia Chamber, the Atlanta Chamber, big time companies, celebrities, all of that weighing in, people who have influence and could make political donations and kind of wield great power. I do think they can have an impact moving down the line.â

Yâall the Apple Watch my cousin got for Christmas saved her life! For months she has has an intermittent blockage of signal to her heart and been putting off getting a pacemaker.
She went to Virginia to arrange a funeral for her aunt. The other night she had palpitations and thought she could wait it out. She clicked on the app on the Apple Watch that checks your heart rate. It showed a reading of 36 and said go to the hospital NOW! She didnât believe it, but luckily her friend called for an ambulance. The doctor said her heart was completely blocked. If sheâd waited another hour sheâs be gone. They gave her a pacemaker yesterday. Today she says she feels like a new woman. She missed the funeral but lives to come home in a couple days.
Oh Dudette, That is a mind boggling story and truly life changing, in the gruest sense of the word. Thankful for your family. Thankful a friend was with her and made her do the right thing.

Ironically, when she was discussing follow-up care for when she gets back home, she told the doctor that she usually goes to the hospital thatâs closest to where we live. I was thinking….what if this bottom up approach to stimulus shows the Republican idea of trickle down to be as fraudulent as they are? What if the economy booms because the majority of people are helped made whole and can see good things happening in their lives? The long held Republican belief of giving massive tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations to help business growth and thus the economy….will collapse and be exposed for the wrong idea that it is. Can THAT be why they are so scared? Joy in my heart!

Rachel is here adorably hilarious: âI would make it like one of those greeting cards that plays a song when you pull it out of the envelopeâŚI would put sequins on the the thing!…Get petty for once!”
Thanks tnmtngirl! We are so grateful for her friend and that she had that watch! She had us laughing when she told us she asked the ambulance EMT to take her to the VA Hospital, he shook his head and said âMâam, itâs your heart, we need to take to take you to VCU.â đ
Ironically, when she was discussing follow-up care for when she gets back home, she told the doctor that she usually goes to the hospital thatâs closest to where we live. The doctor shook his head and said âM,am, itâs your heart, I think you need to go to Emory. Let me make the appointment for you!â
God Bless them all! đđđž
INDEED! “It’s your heart.”

The bill is passed! POTUS signs on Friday!
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
Congratulations President Biden, V.P. Harris and their Administration. Congratulations to Democrats in Congress and their staffs. Congrats to the American people. And everyone who worked on passing this lifesaving bill in any way!!!!!!!!!
YOY! YOY! YOY!
Just watched the enrollment ceremony for the American Rescue Act. While Schumer mentioned the election of Sens Ossoff and Warnock made passage possible, he failed to have them on stage. Warnock has to run again in 2022; he should have been standing next to the table as the bill was being signed. That should be the opening visual and narrative of his reelection campaign.
We’ve got to do better with highlighting our accomplishments!
They should be next to Joe when he signs it!
send your comment to Schumer
Who is bawling intermittently……..eh not me!!!
Now bawling…laughing…eating soup…in turns.
(but it’s not about me, heh)
Folks, we have an Attorney General! Wooooot! đ
I love that former Congresswoman Marcia Fudge got to vote for the American Rescue Plan before resigning to be confirmed HUD Secretary this evening. đ
Smart move. Smart administration. Very thoughtful and mature. What a contrast!
The Biden Cabinet so far

We need this! Thx Nicole!!!
STARTS NOW…!!!
I was in tears more than once. Each day, I never understand how Nicolle gets through that Lives Well Lived segment. She amazing me every day.
Weâve been focused on surviving the blows, protecting the lives of our loved ones. The devastation of saying goodbye on an i-pad or cellphone is beyond imagining. The funeral you couldnât have, the bodies piling up. The doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who diedâŚthe childrenâŚelderly couple together since their teens dies holding handsâŚyoung widows break the news to their children, the new mother who never saw her baby. We will be processing this horror for a long time. Ms. Wallace opened some of this up for us with sweetness and gentleness.
It was very well done!
Look what voting Blue gets for you!

Your guess is very likely on point. They are not ‘totally’ stupid. After all, Wicker was already taking credit for the bill helping restaurants by late yesterday afternoon. Remember, when the Recovery Act passed with none of them, yet they went home to brag and pass out the money for projects. Of course, this is the biggest and most progressive since FDR so, yes, they know what is happening.
New post.

Part of her punishment should be to do the same and ask this child for forgiveness. Make sure she never sets foot in a school again. If she is still there parents pls walz down to the school and drag her out.
