Benjamin “Pap” Singleton – Father of the Exodus

He was born a slave in 1809, but after 37 years of bondage Benjamin Singleton escaped to freedom. He made Detroit his home and operated a secret boardinghouse for other escaped slaves.

After the U.S. Civil War, African Americans in the South enjoyed the rights and privileges of American citizenship. To help African Americans improve their lives, he organized an effort to buy up Tennessee farmland for blacks. But this effort failed because most white landowners refused to sell land to blacks at fair prices.

When the federal troops were removed, their rights were no longer secure. Because Kansas was famous for John Brown’s efforts and its struggle against slavery, Singleton considered the state a new Canaan. Singleton, along with his partner Columbus Johnson, founded settlements in Kansas and helped hundreds of out-of-home black Tennesseans move to the Midwest. He became known as the “Father of the Exodus” for his work in the Exoduster Movement of 1879.

Singleton did not end his work here though. In 1883-84 he sensed a renewed interest in migration and so he attempted to encourage blacks to emigrate to the island of Cyprus which he thought would eventually become an Afro-American nation. This venture was not successful, and so in 1885 Singleton formed the United Trans-Atlantic Society in order to bring African Americans back to their “Fatherland” of Africa. However, this group too was not very successful, and this was largely the end of his career.

    ‘An Insurrectionist President’:
“House Dem Calls Trump’s Impeachment Trial An Open-And-Shut Case”

    Congresswoman Jackson Lee to Hayes:
“…laid out Trump’s long line of actions that demonstrated his lack of respect for democracy and the rule of law, particularly when it came to accepting the results of the 2020 election.”

“I have seen now four impeachment proceedings, including one of a judge.
And it was evident as the election proceeded in 2016 that this campaign and this president and this person, Donald J. Trump, had an irreverence … for democracy, for order, for law and order, for respect, for dignity and he carried that through the campaign right into the United States presidency. That was evidenced by his reckless engagement with Russia, his inviting the Russian ambassador, if you will, to the White House, by leaking classified information, by getting into fights with people of different racial backgrounds, by insulting African American women, Congressional Black Caucus members, as well as other members of Congress.
He was just irreverent and he clearly was someone that was not Lincoln-esque,
he was not a respecter of democracy and it continued as evidenced by his actions with Ukraine and his blatant discussion with the president of Ukraine of what you can do for me. That led, of course, to his prediction.
He predicted that he might not allow a peaceful transfer of power. He was asked several times during the campaign and he was glib but he is never precise, he never admitted that he adhered to the law and order of this nation, and he was right. And he proceeded for months after November to talk about, the election was stolen.
He clearly became an insurrectionist president.”

“House Progressives Make Sure They’re Heard In Negotiations On Covid Relief Package”
“Rep. Pramila Jayapal talks with Rachel Maddow about the work by the House Progressive Caucus to include an increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 and to preserve the broader criteria for stimulus checks in the next Covid relief package.”
–Congresswoman Jayapal saying that Dems must do as promised.

    • February 9, 2021 at 1:00 pm

“And you were right on when you said we shouldn’t care whether republicans are going to vote for this,
or not. Because the vast majority of the American people support this package, republicans and democrats. So if we want to talk about unifying proposals, a big bold stimulus package that raises the wage and gets checks out to people, puts money in people’s pockets, deals with all of the issues that small businesses and families are facing — that is the unifying proposal. And republicans, if they don’t want to go along with it, that’s up to them…the reality is that we’ve got to do what we promised.”

Takes but a minute to remember that he represents corporations and businesses like Koch and he only speaks for them. Like – he could shoot people on 5th Avenue. Can we end his rampage now? He has trained up the gop crew to ignore the rule of law and common logic and fact…meanwhile I bet the whole lot of them wear their seat belts.

“Jeff Bezos to Quit as CEO
But Amazon’s “Predatory Business Model” Will Continue Unless Lawmakers Act”
“Bezos will continue to be the largest Amazon shareholder and remain on the board of directors.
The news comes as calls continue to mount for lawmakers to break up Amazon and other tech giants. “There’s no reason to think anything is going to change at Amazon because Bezos has taken this new role,” says Robert Weissman, president of the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen.
“Neither the economy nor our democracy can really function properly with fairness if Amazon is able to maintain its massive concentration of wealth and power.”

Heads I win, tails you lose.

    1) McConnell could have put trump on trial but refused to recall the Senate – while trump was in office.
    2) The impeachment process began while trump was still in office.
    3) After trump was out McConnell said he couldn’t be tried – because he was out of office.

So actually according to McConnell, Trump could not be tried before OR after he was president.

House Impeachment Manager Joseph Neguse gave an excellent presentation as to why it is within the Constitution to try a impeached president even after he has left office, Better yet, he cited Jonathan Turley, among others, to support his argument.

      • February 9, 2021 at 5:22 pm

        • February 9, 2021 at 5:25 pm

During remarks on the Senate floor, Rep. Joe Neguse (D-CO) pointed to an opinion written by Turley that voiced approval for the use of impeachment after an official has left office.

“Up until a few weeks ago, he was a recognized champion of the view that the Constitution authorizes the impeachment of former officials,” Neguse noted before quoting the legal pundit. “In fact, Jonathan Turley argued that the House could have impeached and the Senate could have tried Richard Nixon after he resigned.”

In quote after quote, Neguse showed that Turley once supported the use of impeachment for officials who were no longer in office.

One of the lawyers heading former President Donald Trump’s defense at his second impeachment trial is conceding that Trump lost the election to Joe Biden, a fact that Trump himself has refused to acknowledge.

In opening remarks Tuesday, lawyer Bruce Castor said: “The American people are smart enough to pick a new administration if they don’t like the old one. And they just did.”

Later, Castor referred to Trump, saying: “He was removed by the voters.”

This should be shown to their constituents over and over again. Let the ppl see that these jackasses don’t care about America. The lackadaisical attitude toward a serious matter.
