Vice President Kamala Harris and Treasury Secretary Dr. Janet Yellen
met yesterday with the Black Chambers of Congress to discuss the American Rescue Plan (COVID-19 relief).

    • February 6, 2021 at 1:39 pm

      This was a virtual event.
      RON BUSBY:
“Thank you, everyone, for joining us this afternoon.
I am truly honored to be with you as we have the opportunity to celebrate Black history,
but also to talk about the current conditions of Black people, as well as to talk about how we engage and go forward for the future of this country, as it relates to Black America. I, again, am the president of the United States Black Chamber. We represent 146 Black chambers located throughout 42 states, including Canada and six countries in Africa, with a membership base of over 380,000 Black owned businesses, but we are the voice of over 2.6 million Black owned businesses.

The U.S. Black Chamber is founded on our five key pillars, and the first one is advocacy.
And this afternoon we’re demonstrating our relationships, as well as the strength that we have that differentiates us from any other Black civil rights or any other chamber of commerce. This is what the U.S. Black Chamber is about. And you’ll hear it from both the vice president, as well as the secretary of treasury, to bring comments as well as concerns as it relates to our issues, specifically Black owned businesses. And one of those primary concerns is access to capital, and we all know it is a tremendous burden for Black business owners, as well as Black homeowners and communities to get affordable and accessible capital.

Our third one is contracting, and we are going to discuss with this administration about opportunities to do business with the federal government, as well as use their bully pulpit to make sure that corporate America is doing its role, as well. And lastly, as a Black collective, you have all heard the story about we have a trillion dollars of spending power. Our responsibility is to keep that trillions of dollars in our community to ensure that we have sustainability, not just through these difficult times, but to thrive after we get out.

The next one is really about entrepreneurial training, and as chamber leaders and business owners across the country, I was really surprised when we heard that 68% of Black businesses failed during the COVID period of time because they did not look for expert advice. We, as chamber leaders and business leaders across the country, have those relationships, have the acumen and skill, and we will make sure that we develop those businesses across the country.

And then last is chamber development, and I’m happy to have over 140 chambers join us this afternoon to talk about the New American Recovery Plan. It is really the details, and always the details, as well as the implementation of programs like this.”

Dr. Patricia E. Bath – Invented Surgical Tool Used in Cataract Surgery

  35. February 7, 2021 at 8:42 am

In 1976 she was a founder of the nonprofit American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, along with Alfred Cannon, a psychiatrist, and Aaron Ifekwunigwe, a pediatrician. The organization has promoted what Dr. Bath called community ophthalmology, which advances optic health through grass-roots screenings, treatments and education.

In 1981, Bath invented the surgical tool that made her famous: the Laserphaco Probe, which she continued to perfect and later patented in 1988. The tool was used during eye surgery to correct cataracts, an eye condition that clouds vision and can lead to blindness. Cataracts usually affect older people. Bath’s laser tool was more precise, less invasive, and less risky than previous devices, and has been used around the world.

Make no mistake: Democracy may have survived this year, but President Biden and Vice President Harris were elected despite, not thanks to, weakened electoral systems. Together with the Democratic Congress, they now have the opportunity to implement reforms that reaffirm our nation’s promises that our country represents and works for everyone. We as Democrats must act before it is too late.
