Dr. King is such an inspiration. I can’t believe that he left this world at 39 years of age. He was wise beyond his young age and his legacy will never fade.

Mark Rutte’s government has stepped down after thousands of families were wrongly accused of child welfare fraud and told to pay money back.

Families suffered an “unparalleled wrong”, Dutch MPs decided, with tax officials, politicians, judges and civil servants leaving them powerless.

Many of those affected were from an immigrant background and hundreds were plunged into financial difficulty.

Mr Rutte submitted the cabinet’s resignation to the king.

“Innocent people have been criminalised and their lives ruined,” he then told reporters, adding that responsibility for what had gone wrong lay with the cabinet. “The buck stops here.”

The “unanimous” decision, taken at a cabinet meeting in The Hague, comes at a key moment in the Covid-19 pandemic.

    Govt accountability, real democracy style.

Black folks , who have been terrorized for almost 500 years, never had an innocence to lose. Neither are we surprised that the right wing white domestic terrorists have finally turned on their handlers. Most of us consider what happened at the Capitol to just be more of white folk’s mess that we are staying out of. Everyone, of all political persuasions, stood by for years and did nothing to help us, now the monster has invaded spaces that so many thought inviolate and there is suddenly hand wringing and wails about how did this happen (to them, not to us) and running round like headless chickens trying to figure out what to do. It is too late; the monster has many tentacles in many places and is reaching into everything. White people never consider something to be a problem until it affects them. The Covid situation is as dire as it is because most of its victims and Black , Brown and Native and there is no urgency to take care of these populations. WE ARE TIRED. We are treated like shit, but we come to the rescue of white folks in our every day lives and to save the nation from itself with our votes. Those chicken shit Republicans who did not vote for impeachment II because they feared for their lives have the luxury of experiencing this only for the first time. Black folks lives are in danger in our own homes , let alone when we leave them. Not sorry about anything that has happened within the last 2 weeks or the last 4 years because it is finally waking up many of the privileged to the horror of what life is really like for anyone not white in this country.
The scene of the mostly Black janitorial staff cleaning the Capitol up after white people trashed the place is a slice of life in the real America. The one thing that kept my anger from being all consuming was the photo of the Asian American rep. from New Jersey (don’t remember his name) who stayed after the vote and helped the staff to clean up.

    President Elect Joe Biden:
    COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan.

“And so tonight I’d like to talk to you about our way forward.
A two-step plan of rescue and recovery, a two-step plan to build a bridge to the other side of the crisis we face to a better, stronger, more secure America. Tonight, I’ll lay out my first step, the American rescue plan that will tackle the pandemic and get direct financial assistance and relief to Americans who need it the most. Next month, in my first appearance before a joint session of Congress, I will lay out my Build Back Better recovery plan. It’ll make historic investments in infrastructure, that Build Back Better plan. Infrastructure, manufacturing, innovation, research, and development, and clean energy, investments in a caregiving economy and skills and training needed by our workers to be able to compete and win in the global economy of the coming years.

Our rescue plan starts aggressively in order to speed up our national COVID-19 response.
The vaccines offer so much hope and we’re grateful to the scientists and researchers and everyone who participated in the clinical trials. We’re also grateful for the rigorous review and testing that has led to millions of people around the world already being vaccinated safely. But the vaccine rollout in the United States has been a dismal failure thus far. Tomorrow I will lay out our vaccination plan to correct course and meet our goal of 100 million shots at the end of my first 100 days as president. This would be one of the most challenging operational efforts we have ever undertaken as a nation. We’ll have to move heaven and earth to get more people vaccinated, to create more places for them to get vaccinated, to mobilize more medical teams, to get shots in people’s arms, to increase vaccine supply and to get it out the door as fast as possible…..

Our rescue plan also includes immediate relief to Americans, hardest hit, and most in need.
We will finish the job of getting a total of $2,000 in cash relief to people who need it the most. The $600 already appropriated is simply not enough. You just have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table. Even for those who have kept their jobs, these checks are really important. You see, if you’re an American worker making $40,000 a year with less than $400 in savings, maybe you’ve lost hours, or maybe you’re doing fewer shifts driving a truck or caring for the kids or the elderly. You’re out there, putting your life from the line to work during this pandemic and worried every week that you’ll get sick, lose your job or worse. $2,000 is going to go a long way to ease that pain….

As I speak, and the Vice President Elect has spoken to this many times,
one in seven households in America, more than one in five Black and Latino households in America, report they don’t have enough food to eat. This includes 30 million adults and as many as 12 million children. It’s wrong, it’s tragic, it’s unnecessary, it’s unacceptable. So we’re going to extend emergency nutritional assistance for 43 million children and their families enrolled in the SNAP program through the rest of this year. We’ll help hard hit restaurants prepare meals for the hungry, provide food for the families who need it. We will invest $3 billion in sure mothers and their young children have the nutrition they need. This will not only meet our moral obligation we have to one another, but it’ll also spur economic growth, get restaurants and workers back on the job.

And as we work to keep people from going hungry, we’ll also work to keep a roof over their heads,
to stem the growing housing crisis and evictions that are looming. Approximately 14 million Americans have fallen behind on rent, many at risk of eviction. If we don’t act now, there’ll be a wave of evictions and foreclosures in the coming months as the pandemic rages on. This would overwhelm emergency shelters, increase COVID-19 infections as people have nowhere to go and can’t socially distance. Next week, we’ll take action to extend nationwide restrictions on evictions and foreclosures. This will provide more than 25 million Americans greater stability instead of living on the edge every single month. And I’m asking Congress to do its part by funding rental assistance for 14 million hard hit families and tenants. It will also be a bridge to economic recovery for countless mom and pop landlords”….

Benen: “Just in time, Trump and Steve Bannon reportedly reconcile”
“Maybe Bannon is once again in frequent communication with Trump because they’re political and ideological allies. Or maybe Bannon is looking for a pardon?”

    • January 15, 2021 at 1:12 pm

      Let us remember:
“Bannon…pushed some of its most hard-line and contentious policies, including the so-called Muslim ban. He describes himself as an “economic nationalist” and a “Leninist” who wants to “deconstruct the administrative state” and foment a populist revolt against the political elite. Bannon believes America’s identity as a nation rooted in “Judaeo-Christian values” is under threat and he is anti-immigration and anti-Islam, which he views as fundamentally at odds with Western civilisation…..he is unapologetic about courting white supremacists and neo-Nazis. In March, he told members of Marine Le Pen’s National Front (now the National Rally) in Lille: “Let them call you racists, let them call you xenophobes, let them call you nativists, wear it as a badge of honour”.

This July (2018) Bannon launched the Movement,
a network that he said aimed to create a far-right “supergroup” by providing campaign support and acting as a “connective tissue” for populist parties across Europe ahead of the May 2019 European elections. On 7 September Matteo Salvini, the Italian interior minister and head of the League, a far-right, anti-immigration party, announced that he was joining the Movement. Bannon has held numerous meetings with politicians across Europe that John Lloyd described in this magazine as the “Illiberal International”, an embryonic alliance of populist, anti-immigration parties. Bannon has met with far-right parties from France, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Hungary, and says he considers Europe at the forefront of the global “populist-nationalist revolt”.

The BIG LIE…yes start there. There needs to be a documentary of some sort that explains what a BIG LIE is, how it is used, how it is propagated and what happens when millions believe it. But these people that pushed the BIG Lie must be held accountable. They want “unity and healing”, explain how they were part of it.

Thank you for this post, Nerdy. I’m 74 years old, and I remember watching Dr. King on TV in real time as though it were yesterday. He had an impact on my life that I could never explain, but I’m so glad he was speaking right before our eyes back then, and not just from our history books … although he still jumps off those pages, too.

Every time I see words from Bernice King, I want to cry. Cannot imagine what his loss did to his family’s hearts back then – and continuing.

“Big lies are a part of authoritarian regime changes in history.”
Timothy Snyder, historian of fascism and political atrocity, on Channel 4:

“The big lie is, of course, Mr Trump’s claim that he won the 2020 presidential election.
This is a big lie because it’s not true,
    it’s a big lie because it’s self-contradictory,
Why would there have been fraud against him but not against others?

It’s also a big lie because it reaches deep back into dark places in American history.
It’s based upon the racist idea that we really shouldn’t be thinking about Black people voting, or if they do vote we should call it fraudulent.

The problem with the big lie, as opposed to an everyday political lie, is it creates tribes.
If you believe something like this, as many people do, it separates you from the rest of the world.
And if you believe something like this it makes you feel like you have to carry out some kind of desperate or violent action, as we’ve already seen.

    What to do about this?
I mean first of all, call it by its name.
Recognize that Big Lies are part of authoritarian regime changes in history.

Second of all, tell the truth about the election, especially if you’re a Republican in a position of authority. If you want to get past Trumpism, the simple thing to do is tell the truth.

And the third thing is to recognize the consequences of the big lie, mainly violence, have to have some kind of judicial consequence. The law has been broken and so the law should be enforced.”
