“Assumptions are the basis of all f-ups” as I’ve been saying to students for many decades.

    A relevant case-in-point:

I do respect Mr Dworkin and his efforts.

Thank you for a new thread, Nerdy.

Hope all of you have as enjoyable and safe a Saturday, as possible.

    Survival checks.
Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley talked about the need for covid relief amid another wave of coronavirus cases: “At this point, these are not even stimulus checks. These are survival checks. My constituents need these monies to remain safely housed. We are looking at an eviction tsunami. $600 does not even cover 1 month’s rent.”
—woh Rep Pressley really got it out there…ended w/ “All eyes on Georgia…Georgia do what you do.”

“First time in more than a generation, Chinook salmon spawn in upper Columbia River”
“The news is a step toward full reintroduction of the migratory fish and another watershed cultural moment for the region’s tribes.”

“I was shocked at first, then I was just overcome with complete joy,” said Crystal Conant, a Colville Tribal member from the Arrow Lakes and SanPoil bands. “I don’t know that I have the right words to even explain the happiness and the healing.”
The news is a step toward full reintroduction of the migratory fish and another watershed cultural moment for the region’s tribes. Since the Chief Joseph and Grand Coulee dams were built in the 1950s and 1930s, respectively, salmon have been blocked from returning to spawning beds in the upper Columbia River.

For decades, tribal leaders and scientists have dreamed of bringing the fish back to their native beds.”

  15. December 19, 2020 at 1:11 pm

    President Obama, PEN award interview:

“There’s going to be a proliferation of new sources, outlets. And the best antibody towards a destructive politics is an informed citizenry. And we’re going to have to build up the critical muscles in the public so that they’re not embracing whatever whacky stuff they’re hearing on the news, or seeing on their phones or in the internet. You and I, and anybody who is listening because we probably have some sort of platform, we probably have a responsibility as well to think about how are young people receiving information in ways that are digestible. Both your books and my books they’re pretty long, they’re pretty dense. And if we want to reach a 13 year old or 14 year old just as they’re about to start thinking about their role in the world and how they might shape it, figuring out how we – without dumbing down – reformat critical vital information, history, principles, into not just texts but also visual mediums and so forth, so that there are more ways of kids getting introduced to these issues.

That’s part of the reason why you know I loved what our mutual friend Lin Manuel Miranda did with “Hamilton”.
For a lot of young people that was an introduction to American history that was interesting. And it may then lead them to read your book or study history in a more serious way because it comes alive….We’re going to have to rekindle the excitement of this American experiment because it is a fascinating drama of whether we can pull this off. Whether we can pull off a country made up of people who come from everywhere, and test whether it is possible to get along and self-govern. If we can pull it off, then it gives hope to everybody around the world. Because the world is shrinking, and cultures are colliding. And if it turns out that our experiment in democracy can function, then it offers the possibility of other communities negotiating their differences in a peaceful, productive way. And if we fail, then the prospects for success elsewhere dim a little bit.”

Baseline: Putin wants the U.S. to lift sanction on Siberian oil = супер важно!
“Russia knew the U.S. would be decapitated under trump.” (Joy Reid)

“A cyber Pearl Harbor” (Malcolm Nance)
Trump has not lifted a tiny finger against the greatest cyber attack in American history — imo the message that Putin sent to PE Biden in poor English was his little joke.

By his silence trump is siding once again with Putin over our U.S. Intelligence Community, besides jeapordising U.S. national security by delaying the transition and preventing briefings to the next President.
= WHEN and HOW will Donald Trump pay for his open cooperation with Putin?

Loeffler serves on four committees: the Committee on Health, Education Labor and Pensions, also known as the HELP Committee and seen as one of the most influential in the Senate; the Joint Economic Committee; Committee on Veterans Affairs and the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry—all plum assignments for a freshman.

Complicating the claim: Hearings often are streamed online or on C-SPAN, giving senators a chance to watch even if they aren’t in the room. Two of the Joint Economic Committee hearings are noted as being conducted remotely.

But there is a figure that is more comparable and can show how often Loeffler showed up: She has missed 33 of the Senate’s 270 roll-call votes, which is 12.2 percent and makes her the 26th-most-absent member of the Senate, based on an analysis from ProPublica.

    “How Science Beat the Virus”
“And what it lost in the process”
    “COVID-19 Changed Science Forever.”
“As of this writing, the biomedical library PubMed lists more than 74,000 COVID-related scientific papers—more than twice as many as there are about polio, measles, cholera, dengue, or other diseases that have plagued humanity for centuries. Only 9,700 Ebola-related papers have been published since its discovery in 1976…”
“No other disease has been scrutinized so intensely, by so much combined intellect, in so brief a time.”
“Open data sets and sophisticated new tools to manipulate them have likewise made today’s researchers more flexible.”
“they’ve invested in so-called platform technologies, in which a standard chassis can be easily customized with different payloads that target new viruses.”
Nicole Lurie (CEPI): “I don’t think the world of vaccine development will ever be the same again.”

I heard Rep. Cedric Richmond tested positive the other day. Nothing about EPA-Nominee Michael Regan being infected. I doubt he’d be there at the podium or in this photo, if he were currently infected.

I could find no updates on Congressman Richmond’s condition since the announcement of his positive test.

Republicans who have no problem exacerbating the pandemic by constantly downplaying the severity of the virus are among the first to get the vaccine? Deplorable is too mild a word to describe them.

Praying that Georgia comes through for Biden/Harris. Otherwise the a-hole Senate wont hesitate to cause even further harm on the ppl. Senate Republicans are enablers of an evil administration.
