“My church will replace our Black Lives Matter sign. Will America replace its racist myth?”
Reverend William H. Lamar IV, pastor of the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, WA.
    (excerpt)
“I am deeply disturbed by this incident (one of several incidents targeting houses of worship),
but I am more disturbed by the continued mythology of imperial America. This mythology supports those who commit violence against human beings for political ends, deny citizens their right to vote, denigrate sacred spaces and claim as their own whatever they survey.
It mattered not that the land was ours. It mattered not that the sign was ours. The mythology that motivated the perpetrators on Saturday night was the underbelly of the American narrative — that White men can employ violence to take what they want and do what they want and call that criminality justice, freedom and liberty.

That is the history written into this nation, into the bodies of those brutalized by this mythology, and carried forth in this moment by human beings who have been malformed by a story of scarcity that precludes their own flourishing and the flourishing of others.

The world’s empires have all fallen upon the ash heap of history.
Only ideologues believe that the American empire will last forever. The death rattle gets louder with every frivolous lawsuit that seeks to overturn the election, with every conspiracy theory that gains purchase, with every refusal to protect the vulnerable from the coronavirus unless corporations are protected first. The political imagination of this entire nation is captive to a white-supremacist myth. Only a new narrative can change the way we order this society.

This new narrative must question everything if we are serious about imagining a better world. The media, academia and religious institutions alike often behave as if American capitalism was decreed by the divine. The economic infrastructure of this nation generates inhumane inequality. Religious fundamentalists believe in individual sin while turning a blind eye to the sinfulness of an economic system that forces working people to pay more of their income in taxes while refusing to pay them living wages, that deprives them of health care and humane retirements. And all this happens while the rich grow richer.”

    Reverend William H. Lamar IV:
“It mattered not that the land was ours. It mattered not that the sign was ours. The mythology that motivated the perpetrators on Saturday night was the underbelly of the American narrative — that White men can employ violence to take what they want and do what they want and call that criminality justice, freedom and liberty.”

      –the Silence.
Joy Reid: “What is your response to the silence that you heard out of the leader of the Christian right, essentially the president of the United States, about that vandalism?”
      Reverend Lamar:
“And I expect nothing less than that silence. That is the same deafening silence of the ancestors of that theological movement, when genocide swept across the nation. It’s the the same silence during the long dark night of enslavement. The same silence when people were ground up in the industrial economy. The same silence now in the midst of the most pornographic inequality that we’ve experienced since the Gilded Age. The silence is the result of the fact that that theology, that world view is captive to white supremacist narratives and white supremacist understandings of the world. And so the theology cannot pierce through the white supremacy. And so you can expect no less than what it is that we’re seeing.”

    • December 16, 2020 at 2:20 pm

      Reid:
“Then he (see video below) claims that the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Dr. King’s historic church,
is not a real American. That this man who was born in Georgia, raised in Georgia, Reverend Warnock who is a native Georgian, is somehow “parachuting into GA” his own home state. When his opponent literally parachuted into Georgia! So I don’t understand what’s going on here, but it feels like there is a fight being waged here against the Black Church. Do you feel that way as a pastor?”
      Reverend Lamar:
“I think there has been unchecked violence against the church and its theology…
what the enslavers knew was that the worship is always political…so the young man that you showed who said “that fellow Warnock”. You know these are ways to dehumanize. There was a time when he would have called Warnock a racial epithet, but he can’t do that now and be considered politic. And so “that fellow”, ‘he wasn’t born here’. It is a settler colonial impulse as I said earlier that says ‘I own the space into which I enter and I determine which people belong’. And so saying that Warnock “parachuted in” is absolute nonsense. But if your conception of citizenship is that one must be white, and or one must hold to this white supremacist narrative, then those who are not a part of that are rendered ‘un-citizens’. Or worse as many scholars call it, ’anti-citizens’. And so those who breached our yard and tore down our sign are motivated by that same mythology. And they have no respect of our property, our tradition. They felt as if they could do what they wanted to do. And until that narrative changes, then our politics will not be able to change. They will not be able to supersede the story that we tell ourselves about we order ourselves as a nation.”

    Maddow:
“We learned that William Barr was pushed out, or resigned, last night.
And we learned that his handpicked deputy, Jeffrey Rosen, will be taking Barr’s place and running the Justice Department until trump is no longer president. Jeffrey Rosen’s key role in trying to cover up the scandal in the alleged criminal behavior by the president that led to trump’s impeachment – it’s interesting to me it hasn’t had much scrutiny at all since the announcement that he’s going to be the new Attorney General. But if he is taking over the Justice Department for just the last month of the trump administration, it’s worth thinking about the kinds of things that trump might want to do in that last month.

It’s worth remembering the role that Rosen had in trying to make that alleged criminal behavior by president trump not only disappear, but disappear in a way that would submarine those allegations and prevent anybody else from looking at them.”

The New Georgia Project and Democracy Docket say Bibb [Macon], Clarke [Athens], Houston [Perry/Warner Robbins] and Paulding [Dallas/Hiram] counties are not offering early voting on a Saturday during three weeks of early voting, which they say is required by state law. Bibb also will not offer early voting on Dec. 31.

But election officials have said state law requires weekend voting only for a primary or general election, not for a runoff.

How are these people planning “foreign” trips with the travel bans other countries have in place???

…it allows Pence — once again — to put distance between himself and Trump’s complaints about the election outcome that are likely to intensify after Congress affirms Biden’s win.”

This is not the first time that Pence has sought to remove himself from under Trump’s brand in recent weeks. He has not been visible during Trump’s efforts to prove election fraud — and the campaign even appeared to drop him from their logo in fundraising requests.

It’s a tactic Pence has used to navigate the final days of Trump’s presidency: stay out of the spotlight and insulate himself from his boss’s baseless election-fraud crusade, all while still finding ways to burnish his own credentials and technically toe the party line.
