So longing for this day. Grateful for TOD being here always and forever, keeping us comforted and informed and fired up and connected to good people. Thank you NerdyWonka.

Congratulations, Nancie! Your words resonate with me! It’s a slam on #45 that no one in his awful White House family had a furry companion. It probably would have comforted poor Barron to have a dog.

Um…is the Trump Crime Syndicate trying to pull off a coup?
They got rid of Secretary of Defense…busy cleaning house getting rid of people who’d get in their way.
Pompeo saying it will be a smooth transition to trump presidency (he’s Secretary of State).
= Cast aside Constitution and put Doom in as authoritarian president.
Let’s hope this is a paranoid idea but there seems there is question of a slow motion coup.
—Whether or No this is the case, how do you make sure it will not happen?

“Sir, what do you say to the Americans that are anxious over the fact that President Trump has yet to concede
and what that might mean for the country?”
    JOE BIDEN:
“Well, I just think it’s an embarrassment, quite frankly.
The only thing that… How can I say this tactfully? I think it will not help the president’s legacy.
I think that I know from my discussions with foreign leaders thus far that they are hopeful that United States’ democratic institutions are viewed once again as being strong and endured. But I think at the end of the day, it’s all going to come to fruition on January 20th, and between now and then my hope and expectation is that the American people do know and do understand that there has been a transition. Even among Republicans who are people who voted for the president, I understand the sense of loss. I get that.”

    Masha Gessen wrote in
    “Autocracy: Rules for Survival”.
    “Rule #1:
Believe the autocrat. He means what he says. Whenever you find yourself thinking, or hear others claiming,
that he is exaggerating, that is our innate tendency to reach for a rationalization. This will happen often: humans seem to have evolved to practice denial when confronted publicly with the unacceptable.”
—Trump is a would-be autocrat and his party is busy carving up departments. They’re doing stuff. Many hypotheses about why. Thinking about the troubling actions of the Trump Administration, I wrote higher up on the thread with Gessen’s lived experience in mind.

GM ….Trump won the majority of white voters again only more so. Because the majority of white people want to maintain the status quo of white supremacy. And we know that if there is a choice of keeping white supremacy or democracy, democracy will be sidelined. So
Where do we go from here. How do we move forward. What is our strategy

    • 88 Don

We need more voters to vote Democratic, we must grow our numbers and overwhelm whomever candidate we go up against. The idea that we can reach out and flip a Trump voter is almost fool’s gold at this point in time. All over Twitter and Facebook their were stories about Republicans switching to vote for the Democrat, I call bullshit on that notion seeing as Trump received a bigger portion of the White vote. I’m not saying that some Republicans didn’t vote for Biden, I’m just saying that this so-called tidal wave of Republicans voting for Joe is much smaller than it was purported to be.

Republican Senator Pat Toomey, who just happens to represent the state of Pennsylvania that Trump is pretending to contest, publicly announced today that “I think a transition process ought to begin” to Joe Biden.

It’s not that someone like Pat Toomey is suddenly growing a backbone or a conscience; those are irrelevant concepts in the Republican world. Instead, people like Toomey are simply deciding to side with their own future political viability at the expense of Trump’s political viability.

What a fucked up system where the loser still gets to dictate terms. I am not aware of any country where a winner has to wait for fucking two months to take over.

    • November 11, 2020 at 8:00 am

“I am not aware of any country where a winner has to wait for fucking two months to take over.”

I heard Jason Johnson speak to that this morning. There was a time that communicating information to the masses was a slow process (e.g., pony express). With the speed of communications today, that two-month gap is outdated.

      ======

Perhaps when evaluating the need for the Electoral College, we can also evaluate moving up Inauguration Day.

        Good Morning TODville Community.
        1001% correct, Amk.
Note that this 70 something plus days was an improvement from yesteryears…it used to be April 4th.

As technological advances greatly reduced the times to tabulate votes, report the results and travel, such a long lame-duck period was no longer logistically necessary. As a result, the 20th Amendment, which was ratified on January 23, 1933, moved up Inauguration Day to January 20 and the first meeting of the new Congress to January 3. The 20th Amendment didn’t take effect until October 1933, after the long lame-duck period once again proved problematic. With the U.S. in the throes of the Great Depression, incoming President Franklin D. Roosevelt had to wait four months to implement his New Deal while uncertainty further roiled financial markets. January 20 first served as Inauguration Day in 1937 when Roosevelt was sworn in for a second term. (On years when January 20 is a Sunday, a private swearing-in ceremony occurs with the public oath of office taken on January 21.)

We often criticize Democrats for not taking drastic actions as we know Republicans will do. Sometimes Republican rash tactics DO come back to bite them.

    • 113 Don
      November 11, 2020 at 9:25 am

Republicans aren’t bothered by past actions coming back to bite them because there is always a gullible voter just around the corner that will believe anything the Republicans tell them. Though I love me some President Obama, there is no way in hell would I believe him if he told me that the moon was made of green cheese. And the reason why I wouldn’t believe him is because I have fucking eyes, and a functioning brain, and I believe in science.

My goodness, I’ve said this many times here. President Obama is ruthless in the way he goes about his business, he held his tongue for four years while Trump did everything to elicit any type of response from him. President Obama always knew this day would come, and now its here. Its as if Joe, Kamala, and Barack are sitting on the phone together laughing at the many ways that they are going to come for Trump.

      • November 11, 2020 at 9:42 am

Yeah, Republicans tend to do and say whatever — even when they themselves don’t believe what they’re saying — because they know that there are always people gullible enough to believe them simply because of who said it.

They also tend to act with little or no care about repercussions because by the time the repercussions come — IF they come — the damage will have already been done.

    • November 11, 2020 at 10:32 am
