    President Obama to Miami-Dade:
    1. You can vote early in person right now through next Sunday.
    2. You can vote from home with a mail-in ballot.
“Do not wait! Put it in the mail today! Or drop it off at Drop Box location in Miami-Dade County.
And If you need more information, just go to Iwillvote.com to find where to early vote in person, or to drop off your ballot. And if you’ve already voted, what do you need to do? You’ve got to go help your friends and family make a plan to vote. Coz this election requires every single one of us. What we do in these next 10 days will matter for decades to come.”

The Postal Service has a target of 95% of mail being delivered in 5 days.
“That target is being missed almost everywhere in the country.
But it is worse, as I said, in battleground states now. And this is a particularly concerning problem in the great state of Michigan. Thanks to Michigan republican legislatures and judges, ballots that aren’t received by Election Day are not going to be counted in Michigan this year no matter when they were postmarked. Which means it REALLY, REALLY MATTERS if the mail is slow. Well in the Detroit area last week, on time mail delivery barely cracked 70% – which is really bad.”

    • October 25, 2020 at 11:48 am

Senator Gary Peters (MI), top Democrat on Homeland Security, speaks to Maddow.
Maddow: “It really does seems like they broke the Post Office as best they could this summer.
But is it your understanding that it might actually be worse in Michigan, than almost anywhere else in the country?”
      Senator Peters:
“Well it is. My committee staff have been in ongoing investigation to find out exactly what happened after the Postmaster General decided to put a ‘pause’ on the changes that he put forward in July. As we know has had a significant impact on slowing down the mail. I’ve been working closely with the Inspector General. In fact an IG report came out that said that the changes that the Postal Service put forward, there was no analysis, there was no data that went into those changes as to anticipate what would happen.”

    • October 25, 2020 at 11:50 am

      Sen. Peters:
“We KNOW what happened because mail delivery times dropped dramatically.
As you mention in the opening of the segment, 95% delivery within the timeframe one to five days is the goal. It dropped very low during that time. In Detroit for example is in the 60% range. And we’ve been watching it to see is it recovering? And it is recovering in parts of the country. Nowhere near the 95%. But in certain parts of the country, to your point Rachel, it has not recovered. In Detroit for example, right now we’re at 72% delivery on time. Which means an awful lot of mail is delayed…the Detroit district has not seen that recovery. Pennsylvania has also not seen a recovery particularly around Philadelphia. Northern Ohio, Colorado. So there are certain parts of the country where this has not recovered.”

    • October 25, 2020 at 11:51 am

      Sen. Peters:
“And it just so happens a lot of these places, as you know, are key places in terms of the election.
Michigan – we are a key battleground state. I’m in a major race for the U.S. Senate here. And for the presidential race, Michigan is clearly a battleground. So to have this lag in delivery is very concerning.”

    • October 25, 2020 at 11:52 am

“And not only is Michigan a key battleground state. But you are in an incredibly hard fought Senate race right now. Whether or not you are re-elected to the Senate may very well determine whether or not Democrats or republicans control the U.S. Senate this year, and it’s a really tight race that you’re in. When you campaign around the state and you talk to people who are concerned about whether or not their ballot is going to count in Michigan, what are you advising people to do? Obviously there’s reason to worry about the speed of the Postal Service, particularly in Detroit. What are you advising your supporters and your constituents?”

“A clerk actually has to have possession of that ballot on Election Day.
Many states around the country say if it’s postmarked, it still will be counted even if it’s 2 or 3 days late.
But not in Michigan. And the republicans here have prevented that from going forward. We saw ballots that weren’t counted in the Primary in August because they may have come in a couple of days late.
So right now the advice that I’m giving the folks is:
    When you have your ballot,
and when you’ve been able to fill it out, take it to the Clerk!
Take it to the Drop Boxes.
Most of our Clerks all across the state have secured Drop Boxes. The city of Detroit, there are a number of Drop Boxes all across the city for example.
But take the time. Then you know for sure that it actually will be counted.”

    • October 25, 2020 at 11:58 am

      Sen. Peters:
“But right now I’m also concerned
about some information I’ve been getting that people haven’t RECEIVED their ballots as well.
Even though they’ve been REQUESTING ballots sometimes going into late September.
They still haven’t received it in the mail. And that adds a further complication.
And they’re going to have to go to the Clerk and say:
‘I NEVER RECEIVED this ballot even though I requested it. And we followed online, it was mailed somewhere around the end of September, I still don’t have it.’

    • October 25, 2020 at 11:59 am

      Sen Peters:
“So I’m really encouraging folks to go right to your Clerk.
You can vote in person in Michigan, we have same day registration if you’re not registered. You can make an appointment, you can walk in, you can Vote, and deposit it right in the Drop Box. Right there to be sure that your vote is counted. But at this point folks can’t take a chance.
They need to drop it off at the Clerk’s Office.”

    “Several thousand years ago,
a young adult moved barefoot across a muddy landscape.
A toddler was balanced on the adult’s hip.
There were large animals — mammoths and ground sloths — just over the horizon.
It was a perilous journey, and scientists reconstructed it by closely studying an exceptional set of human and animal footprints found recently in the southwestern United States.
This is an amazing trackway,” said Neil Thomas Roach, an anthropologist at Harvard University, who was not involved in the research, which was published online this month in Quaternary Science Reviews.
“We rarely get tracks as well preserved as these are.”
It is one of the most extensive Pleistocene-age trackways found to date, and studying it highlights how ancient sets of fossilized footprints can reveal more than even fossilized bones. It’s rare for bones to reveal behaviors, but tracks can shed a lot of light on animal interactions, said Sally C. Reynolds, a paleoecologist at Bournemouth University in England and an author of the study.”
—-A round trip of 427 young human footsteps 12,000 years ago, in terrain inhabited by mammoths and giant ground sloths.

    • October 25, 2020 at 2:13 pm

“A toddler-aged child was being carried and periodically placed on the muddy ground as the caregiver readjusted his or her human load, the researchers surmised, based on the three-dimensional digital models they had assembled. There are no toddler footprints within the southbound set of tracks, so the child probably wasn’t carried on that journey. It’s likely that the child rode on the young person’s left hip. There’s a slight asymmetry between the left and right tracks on the northbound set of tracks. That’s consistent with someone carrying extra weight on that side…”

    • October 25, 2020 at 2:32 pm

Most likely a woman, carrying a toddler and putting her/him down every so often on the muddy ground. Moving quickly, maybe 4 miles an hour. A large giant ground sloth stopped and shuffled in a circle, crossing her tracks on her way north bound. A mammoth crossed on top of her returning tracks. There were also bear tracks. Why was she hurrying to leave the child somewhere and hurrying back? She was probably a member of the Clovis culture. Humans and mammoths co-existed prior to about 12,750 years ago. After that there were major exiinctions of an array of animals e.g. Pleistocene horses and camels, saber tooth cats, short-faced bears, giant armadillos. Imagine woman on her own in a landscape with those kind of creatures. The article doesn’t say this but there may be artifacts to be found on this woman’s group. Archaelogy anyone? Tell your child this story!!
—Eh maybe we can get the petty (when we think of humans 13K years ago) moment we’re in, into perspective…

      • October 25, 2020 at 10:50 pm

Apologies, sorry this is no petty moment…when we’re in a critical fight for our future.

“What Americans should learn from Belarus” (the incredible Tim Snyder)
    “Those Americans who believe
that the Democrats are their best hope for thwarting the rise of authoritarianism must confront a basic question: Given that President Trump intends to spoil the elections if he can’t win them, how do citizens ensure that November’s victors take office? As Kamala D. Harris and Joe Biden dominate the news, we have looked past Belarus, whose courageous citizens show us the way. In this post-Soviet republic, run for a quarter-century by the same man, we have a refreshing example of how to face the worst — and win.”

    • October 25, 2020 at 3:19 pm

“The predicament of Belarusans after the rigged presidential election of Aug. 9
is a sharpened preview of what Americans will face this November.
The local dictator, Alexander Lukashenko, responded to the outbreak of covid-19 with magical thinking. As the economy crumbled, his opponents realized that they enjoyed a majority. When Lukashenko claimed an improbable victory after the election, Belarusans took to the streets. They were beaten and detained by riot police; Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his congratulations to Lukashenko. It is not hard to imagine that Trump and Attorney General William P. Barr would be satisfied with a similar turn of events here in November.”

    • October 25, 2020 at 3:20 pm

“Yet the Belarusan story did not end there, because Belarusans were prepared and did not give up. They came out again, all over the country, in smaller groups that were harder to disperse. Avoiding direct clashes with security forces, they made their presence known with the colors they wore, the flags they waved and the posters they held. Onlookers applauded from their apartments, pedestrians flashed the V sign and drivers honked their horns in support.”

    • October 25, 2020 at 3:28 pm

“Belarusans teach us what I would call “the six Ps” of defending an electoral victory against authoritarian chaos: preparation, predominance, protest, peace, persistence and pluralism.”

“Democracy is a value, so it must be valued, and it is a practice, so it must be practiced. If we want it, we must be open to learning from others, and then be prepared to take responsibility for ourselves.”
      (Historian Timothy Snyder)

I believe that as long as they believe and as long as the numbers indicate (the numbers that they choose to acknowledge) the demographics that are more susceptible to catching and succumbing to this virus, and as long as they believe that they are safe within their bubble and have access to treatments that the rest of us have no access to, they are less likely to WANT to put up a fight.

Their focus will be on the money making aspect — treatment drugs and vaccines. And even these won’t be affordable to most.

Good Morning, TOD Family! Kudos to Nerdy.

I hope that everyone is doing what they need to do to stay safe. The Orange Oval Office Occupant and his cohorts continue to treat this pandemic as a joke. Even with spikes in cases and hospitals reaching and going over capacity, he continues to use nonsensical explanations to rationalize his ineptness and LAZINESS.

I know that polls are not votes. But with groups like the Lincoln Project and Republicans for Biden, along with the many endorsements and announcements by Conservatives/Life-Long Republicans who are backing Biden, when we see reports from early voting of Democratic versus Republican voters, I have to wonder, do all Republican numbers equate to votes for tRump or does it simply indicate the number of votes from those who are *registered* Republicans? [Of course, I recognize that the opposite can be true but is IMO less likely.] Keep in mind that most states don’t actually tabulate votes prior to Election Day; just validate and prepare them for count.

Call it wishful thinking or grasping at straws, but I want to believe that many registered Republicans voted for Biden – and hopefully other Democrats down ballot – and that the BLUE WAVE is actually a bigger tsunami than is being predicted.
