Michigan State Senator Dayna Polehanki speaks to Chris Hayes.
She was working at the State House back in April when armed protestors stormed the Capitol
demanding the COVID-19 lockdown be lifted. Two of those men were arrested yesterday regarding the plot,
foiled by the FBI, to kidnap Governor Whitmer and more.

    • October 9, 2020 at 2:17 pm

      State Sen. Polehanki:
“I’m still shaken. Even more so to learn that two of the men in the photo that I took are conspirators in this plot to kidnap the Governor and storm the Capitol. I really do feel grateful though however to our Attorney General Dana Nessel, the FBI, the Michigan State Police, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for thwarting this plot. I’m just so grateful and I wanted to make sure I said that.”

    • October 9, 2020 at 2:19 pm

Hayes: “What has been the reaction among your colleagues today?”
      State Sen. Polehanki:
“You would think there would be bipartisan unity wouldn’t you?
Unfortunately just today the person who was in charge of moving bills, our Senate majority leader, pretty much said he doesn’t plan on acting to prohibit guns from our Capitol to keep us safe. He said we can’t legislate and get rid of all risks. He talks about needing to be strong and ‘not be afraid of those who are taking our freedoms away’. And it just seems like they’re intent on baiting this group. There was a group at the Capitol today, and the majority leader said those words to them on the Capitol steps! Some of them were armed. I had to be escorted to my office today by the Sergeants of Arms. Because there were guns at the Capitol today. You would think it’d bipartisan. It’s not.”

    • October 9, 2020 at 2:22 pm

“You can open carry. You can concealed carry. But there is a fear that signs may chip the paint…”
      Hayes:
“You’re saying there were protestors today outside the Capitol? And some of them had weapons on them, which is protected by state laws. They are allowed to open carry on Capitol grounds”.
State Sen. Polehanki: “Except you can’t carry SIGNS in our Capitol.”
Hayes:“Is that right? You can’t carry signs but you can carry a long gun?”
      State Sen. Polehanki:
“That is absolutely correct. You can open carry. You can concealed carry. But there is fear that the signs may chip the paint on the walls of our beautiful Capitol. So signs are not allowed.”

    • October 9, 2020 at 2:27 pm

Hayes: “We had you I think on the program back in April and I remember looking at these images…
they were menacing. And to see there was an actual plot, there were talks of possibly constructing IEDs,
of kidnapping the Governor, and bringing her to Mackinac Island where there is a house, and having a show trial for ‘treason’. I can understand why you were looking over your shoulder TODAY of all days, with armed protestors outside your door.”
      State Sen. Polehanki:
“Every day when I enter the Capitol’s floor I look into the gallery for armed gunman.
I keep a bulletproof vest under my desk.
And that’s just how it is in my workplace and it’s unfortunate.
The news today was of course about the plot to kidnap the Governor, which is bad enough. But in the affidavit there was also a plot to storm our Capitol with hundreds of armed men, take hostages, kidnap politicians. And just today we had kids visiting our Capitol, sitting in the same gallery where the armed men were. And I’m just afraid for them. I’m afraid for them, for myself, my colleagues, the staff, the journalists, everyone.”

    • October 9, 2020 at 2:28 pm

Hayes: “I wanted to ask you about the Governor…she really had a target painted on her back.
The president’s tweets at her “Liberate Michigan!” Telling her these were ‘nice people’ the armed men that showed up. And that she should ‘give a little, she should work things out with them’….
She has taken a very strong approach to the virus there. What is your take away about the politics of this, and what Michiganders think about all this?”
      State Sen. Polehanki:
“These men – I just want to make it clear – don’t represent the vast majority of Michiganders who do approve of the Governor’s ‘Stay home, stay safe’ order, her mask order. You know Michigan’s doing a great job with the Coronavirus. And that’s in large part because of the Governor’s executive orders. And she’s saved lives, thousands of lives! So it’s not surprising to me that she’s so popular.”

eff there must be something in my eye…
Paint on the walls potentially chipped by signs:
Is more important at MI State Capitol than the precious lives of the public employees who work there.
Do their families worry whether they will make it home?
Are employees paid danger money? They are not police officers, they are civilian public servants .
When will Michigan stop the presence of open and concealed arms in the Capitol?
Give all the employees medals and fire this state senate majority leader!
Deadly bang! bang! boy games with guns are not tolerated anywhere else in the ‘free world’.
—Oh and despite the teevee and movie wishful pretense, guns are still illegal in the U.K.

    MoscowMitch:
Says he has not entered the White House since August 6th “due to their approach” to COVID-19.
“I have stayed away from the White House because the president is so incompetent.
His team is so dangerous, so incompetent,
so deluded, that I do not trust him with my own personal health,
even though I’m going to do everything I can to keep him in power.”
    James Carville to Hayes:
“Mitch McConnell cares about one thing, power! Power.
And his Senate candidates are coming in and they’re getting slaughtered out there. And so he’s trying to give them some space to get away from Trump. I mean they’ve run away from Trump like the devil runs away from holy water!…You can just feel it that they’re looking for some space out there. And McConnell was trying to give them some. That’s exactly what’s behind this.”

Beto O’Rourke to Hayes on the Cornyn/Hagar race:
“It is a real race and I think Texans have been able to connect the dots.
They understand that John Cornyn has not only voted time and again, to take away health care, including protections for pre-existing conditions, but he has enabled Donald Trump. So if you are angered by the kids in cages, if you are so frustrated and disgusted by the open racism of this president, the failed response to COViD, and the great recession since the Great Depression…John Cornyn…in the Senate has made it possible.
And MJ Hagar is the alternative.”

    30 years:
    Celebrating Native Americans’ Day:
HAU MITAKUYEPI, CANTE WASTE NAPE CIYUZAPELO
    by Kyle Chase.
(Hello my relatives, I greet you with warm heart and handshake).
“This year, South Dakotans are celebrating the 30th anniversary
of recognizing the second Monday in October
    as Native Americans’ Day.
As a 30-year old-who has never known the second Monday in October to be anything different, I’m honored to share my perspective and reflections on this meaningful day.
I’m a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and a lifelong South Dakotan.
I’ve grown up constantly analyzing issues from different perspectives: Indian v. non-Indian; State v. Tribal; Midwest values v. Lakota values. The two perspectives can be similar, but more often than not they are very different.
When Senator Mike Rounds asked me to write some thoughts for his column this week,
I wanted to use it as an opportunity to discuss these dual perspectives I have grown up with so all South Dakotans can take a moment to deepen our understanding of our Lakota, Nakota and Dakota neighbors and appreciate what this culture contributes to our society.
I’d like to begin with what Native Americans’ Day in South Dakota is NOT.
It’s not Columbus Day. It’s not an attempt to participate in the recent cancel culture fad. Columbus Day only officially became a federal holiday in 1937. Despite Columbus’ recognition on the federal calendar, South Dakota chose to be a leader in promoting our culture and, in 1990, became the very first state to proclaim the second Monday in October as Native Americans’ Day.
The naming was also commemorated by proclaiming 1990 as the “Year of Reconciliation.”
The Year of Reconciliation honored the tragic 100th anniversary of the Wounded Knee massacre and focused on promoting healthy relationships between the tribes and the state into the future.”

A private security company is recruiting a “large contingent” of former U.S. military Special Operations personnel to guard polling sites in Minnesota on Election Day as part of an effort “to make sure that the Antifas don’t try to destroy the election sites,” according to the chairman of the company.

The recruiting effort is being done by Atlas Aegis, a private security company based in Tennessee that was formed last year and is run by U.S. military veterans, including people with Special Operations experience, according to its website.

It is illegal in Minnesota for people other than voters and elections staff — or those people meeting the requirements to be a registered election “challenger”— to be within 100 feet of polling sites.

There are also laws against voter intimidation that could prevent armed civilians from being in the area even if outside the buffer, according to election officials in Minnesota.
