“Journalists, beware: This White House can’t be trusted to be truthful about Trump’s health”
    (Margaret Sullivan, WaPo)

      Jon Meacham, presidential historian,
distinguished professor at Vanderbilt University, speaks with Joy Reid.
Reid: “Presidents don’t necessarily tell the American public the truth about their health. But how much different is it when it’s this president?”
      Meacham:
“You’re exactly right. It’s far more the rule than the exception that presidents mislead us about the details of their health. Woodrow Wilson and his stroke late in his two terms, which had a clear effect on the political life of the country, and the international order, because of the failure of the League of Nations. President Roosevelt, his polio was kind of the last of it. He kept the fact that he had congested heart failure going into his fourth term in the 1944 election, and was asking the country to vote for him in 1944, without being in any way straight forward about the way he was feeling and his prospects for longevity. President Kennedy you mentioned, never disclosed Addison’s Disease. President Reagan, there was a doctored photograph after the shooting. President Bush Senior had Graves’ Disease in his term and was not clear about that. So part of the currency in the presidency in many ways is to project strength no matter what. And so that’s the cultural surround. Then you as you suggest you add in the cultural surround of the Trump White House, which is that the leader is right no matter what. And so you have this dangerous tendency in real time with a historical and retrospective tradition, that I think will leave us with some mystification and uncertainty about the truth what is unfolding even as we speak. The good news is if the White House decided to be candid, to be straight forward and over-brief, there’s also a great political tradition of getting through moments of crisis by, in a way, oversharing information. That’s seems vanishingly unlikely. But there is that possibility. And of course what’s so fascinating about this is, you don’t want to discuss the political ramifications of this as if we were talking about a horse race. But when you’re President of the United States as they used to say in the 60’s, the personal is the political. Because it’s about the overall health, not only of the President but of the body politic itself.”

    • October 5, 2020 at 2:11 pm

Reid: “You know you mention Woodrow Wilson. I think you might have done interviews with me enough to know that I am fairly obsessed with this presidency. Because it does have so many parallels to the current one. We sort of search in desperation to find some parallels to Donald Trump to feel normal sometimes. And Woodrow Wilson was twice Trump in the sense not only of racial abuse etcetera. But there was as you said this flu diagnosis and other diagnoses, including during the Spanish flu. When he did get the flu, the government went to great lengths to keep it secret. But he was also untruthful about the flu as it spread across the country for other reasons. Not wanting to disrupt the march into World War One. So he was both right? So we’ve had that kind of a situation before.”
      Meacham:
“We have. You know Wilson segregated the federal government. He was president when the second Klu Klux Klan was founded in 1915. He curbed civil liberties in a dramatic way. He and his Attorney General launched warrantless raids on suspected dissidents with such frequency and such ferocity, that it led to the creation of the ACLU as a response. It was a period of enormous anti-immigrant feeling. It was an era where ‘Americanism’ the phrase, was 100% Americanism. He wanted it to be 100% America. And so it was an era of nativism, it was an era of racism. And it was presided over by a president, who because he was consumed by his sense of his own virtue, that he did mislead us fundamentally. Particularly in critical years late in his term, when he was trying to rebuild the world after the cataclysm of the 1st World War. “

    • October 5, 2020 at 2:12 pm

Reid: “And that said, there doesn’t seem to be any historical precedent for this current president.
In part because this is all happening, this maelstrom of events which now include the president himself becoming infected by the coronavirus that he has downplayed, after admitting that he knew how lethal it was. And how dangerous it was. Then you add an election that’s already underway. What is your perspective that you can offer us on all of that mixed together?”
      Meacham:
“All of that mixed together – there is a certain historical symmetry to what’s unfolding right now in Washington and in Bethesda. Donald Trump – and we all wish him well. Donald Trump is an anomaly in some ways. But as you just alluded to, he’s also a fuller manifestation of many of the forces in American life that when we have had those forces ebb, we have been in better shape than when they flowed. Nativism, isolationism, extremism. And there’s something about the fact that now he suffers from the virus that has afflicted the United States so dramatically, has affected the world so dramatically. And so in a way we’re seeing a literal and a metaphorical coming together of all the forces that have shaped us off and on throughout our history. But with particular ferocity and particular clarity in the past 5 years. And the fact that it is unfolding with 32 days before America will decide whether they want to continue to be the America of Donald Trump. Or whether they would like to be the America that Joe Biden represents, offers yet another dimension to the starkness of the choice that sits before us.”

    Congressman Jim Clyburn,
Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, speaks to Maddow.
Maddow: “Now that we know that the president is having significant symptoms and is hosptitalized, I just wanted to get your reaction.”
    Congressman Clyburn:
“Well first of all irrespective of whatever may be our religious persuasions, we ought to be keeping the first family in our thoughts, in our prayers, and hopefully they will have a speedy and complete recovery. That’s first and foremost. I do believe though, that our country must move forward. And our Constitution will guide that. Now though the 25th Amendment is kind of convoluted…I think that all of our leadership should gather and have some discussions as to what should happen…”

    • October 5, 2020 at 2:24 pm

Maddow: “Congressman, the White House has been less than transparent
when it comes to the issue of the president health. They haven’t released information on the president’s health that is in keeping with modern presidencies, including a mysterious incident recently not that long ago, where the president went to Walter Reed and stayed for a long time without explanation. Without there being anything ever explained credibly…Vice President Pence simply said that he “didn’t recall” whether or not he had been asked to stand by. All of that is worrying in terms of how much we can trust coming from the White House. Have you and other leaders in Congress been briefed candidly about the president’s condition? Or have you been advised that you will be briefed?”
      Congressman Clyburn:

“No. I’ve not been in any briefings about the president’s condition.
I’ve been in a lot of the discussions about what may or may not be. Everybody may be having these kinds of discussions. But I will say this. I do believe it is necessary for the leadership of the Vice President Pence and the leadership of both Houses, need to be sitting down and having those discussions now. This country is teetering on two pandemics. COVID-19 has taken its toll on this country. We’ve had some significant racial issues involving law enforcement…these things alone are testing the country in a big way. Now to have THIS issue of leadership. That mix puts the country in a pretty precarious situation. And it needs to have bi-partisan leadership gathered around to ensure the civility of this country. Because it could become an international problem for us, a problem of security for the nation. So we should be having those discussions, setting our party differences aside. And think about the country for the next several days and get things stabilized.”

“25th Amendment Time As Donald Trump Jr. Says His Dad Is Acting Crazy”
‘Sources said Donald Trump Jr. is deeply upset by his father’s decision to drive around Walter Reed National Military Medical Center last night with members of the Secret Service while he was infected with COVID-19. Don Jr. thinks Trump is acting crazy,” one of the sources told me. The stunt outraged medical experts, including an attending physician at Walter Reed.” (Vanity Fair)

Now giving a detailed response to what is need to prepare schools safely, and he has a detailed plan for it.
    Fabulous to hear him.

Joe is doing well. Worth noting the question about how he would react to bullies, preceded by a comment on the constant interruption from Trump a week ago to which he was subjected.

It is what attracts some on the right, the appearance of a strong, macho man, so well rehearsed by the buffoon from Walter Reed.

Mature people know real men, decent men when they see one. Others are attracted to con men putting up a show of strength, aggrandizing their power, lying about their knowledge. You see these men in many fools in movies such as I, Claudius. There is one now in the White House who fascinates a lot of immature people whose lives are shallow.
