I recently asked when absentee ballots are counted…i.e., as they are received by the election office or Election Day? Given Covid-19 and the desire to avoid long lines, it is expected that the volume of absentee ballots will increase. If counts don’t occur until Election Day, the delay in the availability of results will give “tRump and Company” the opportunity to sabotage people’s confidence in its reliability.
The answer varies by state but for the most part, ballots are at least *processed* upon receipt (comparing the affidavit signature on the outside of the return envelope against the voter’s signature on record to ensure a match, or otherwise verify the voter’s identity, opening the ballot and preparing it for tabulation).
Most states do not begin *counting* until Election Day – anywhere from the beginning of Election Day to after the polls close. One state – Maryland – does not even begin counting absentee ballots until 8 a.m. the Wednesday after Election Day. There are states that begin counting 14 – 15 days before Election Day. Other states, especially those with large populations or a high volume of absentee ballots, may decide to begin counting earlier. In all cases, results can NOT be reported (at least they’re not supposed to be reported) until the polls are closed on Election Day.
Criticisms about processing mail ballots before Election Day usually center on concerns that early results will be leaked before the close of polls. Legislators need to at least give election administrators a chance to do their jobs well. One way they can do that during this election cycle is to allow for the processing of mail ballots before Election Day. Hayes: “The president saying we’re ‘rounding the corner’ while Dr. Anthony Fauci tells us to “hunker down”
for a difficult fall and winter.”
Sebelius:
“Well let’s start with this – believe Tony Fauci.
We know the president is a liar. He started lying the day he was inaugurated about the crowd size.
And he has consistently lied to the American public. The Bob Woodward tape is chilling. Because not only does the president, in his own words, acknowledge that he absolutely understood the gravity of the disease. Understood how different it was from the flu. Understood what the death rates could be. But lied to the public. But in addition to that Chris, I think we’ve got to talk about how he never used the muscle of the federal government to do what he could have and should have done, at that point in February: Mobilize a massive testing campaign nationally. Mobilize the production and gathering of PPE and save lives in nursing homes across this country. Mobilize the will of the American public to take some tough medicine and withdraw from interaction with one another. And get the virus down to the point that we could not only protect vulnerable citizens, but build testing capacity and tracing capacities. So when we re-emerge, we would be able to effectively do contact tracing.
None of that is done.
Sebelius:
“So we’re approaching 200,000 deaths.
And most of those are I think directly related to what this president refused to do. We don’t need a cheerleader. We needed a Commander in Chief to put in a national response. That’s what every successful country has done. And that’s what the United States has absolutely failed to do.”
Hayes: “I want to ask specifically about the ways in which political pressure has over-ridden technical expertise. And that email that Paul Alexander…an appointee who is working for the president…telling…that there is zero evidence in the world of child transmission! It’s so dangerous, that you have this person telling Dr Anthony Fauci what to tell people about what the science says about transmission.”
Sebelius:
“Well once again I find it stunning.
I have no idea why someone within HHS is trying to take control of what the public health officials should be telling the American public. They have really eroded the trust that the public should have in public health. They’ve eroded the ability of health officials to step out.”
Sebelius:
“The good news is nobody is going to tell Anthony Fauci what he should or should not say.
They have blocked him from appearances, which they really have done over and over again. But if he gets asked a question, Anthony Fauci will tell you the truth, tell you what he knows and what he doesn’t know. And do it in a very direct fashion. That’s what is very threatening to this administration. And I think that the fact that (someone) at DHSS is trying to suggest what Tony Fauci should and should not be saying, and is giving him directly contrary information to what we know the science says, is completely dangerous and outrageous.”
Hayes: “This (Peter Alexander) is not a civil service person with any expertise. This is just a political hack who got thrown in there.”
