“We see the power of that nonsense at the top
manifest in death on the ground.
    What has emerged this week,
is that it may no longer even be the policy of the U.S. government
to try to stop the spread of COVID.”
    (Maddow)

—Trump and his new know-nothing head of Coronavirus strategy are pushing herd immunity.

    • September 3, 2020 at 12:01 pm

Hear (link above) what Trump’s zero experience guy Scott Atlas says about getting to herd immunity.
His idea is the more people get COVID-19 the better.
We know that herd immunity will require at least 2.1 million deaths.
Trump is a lazy do-nothing, per his business style.
Herd immunity is what he wants president Fail America wants to hear now.

Trump pushing herd immunity after catastrophic failure to respond to Coronavirus.
FACT: Trump’s new Coronovarius head Scott Atlas is a radiologist.
Maddow: “His specialty is doing MRIs of the spine, which has nothing to do with Coronavirus, at all.
He has no public health experience, again no infectious disease experience, no epidemiology experience. But he is apparently the new guy running the Coronavirus strategy at the White House. The president apparently likes him doing these contrarian hits on Fox News, where he proposed this idea where
‘We really should see if we can get everybody infected, because that would be better’.

    Steve Benen quoting Trump:
“Asked about the reliability of North Carolina’s mail-in-voting system, the Republican said,
“So let them send it in and let them go vote, and if their system’s as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote. If it isn’t tabulated, they’ll be able to vote.”
Trump added, “If it’s as good as they say it is, then obviously they won’t be able to vote.
If it isn’t tabulated, they’ll be able to vote. So that’s the way it is. And that’s what they should do.”
In other words, as far as the president is concerned,
North Carolina voters should deliberately commit voter fraud as a test of the state’s electoral system.
What North Carolinians “should do,” in Trump’s mind,
is get a vote-by-mail ballot, “send it in,”
and then try to vote again in person.
Those who take the president’s advice will be committing a felony and subject to criminal charges.
And while it’s also illegal to encourage Americans to commit voter fraud, Trump won’t be prosecuted — but those who try to vote twice may very well find themselves in serious legal jeopardy.”

“Disruptions of mail aren’t just a problem for the election—they’re a danger to millions of American lives.”
    (Laurie Garrett, Kavita Patel)
“The essential fact is that Americans are dependent on the Postal Service for their basic medical well-being—and have become increasingly so for decades. There are several reasons why that’s the case—and why the Postal Service’s disruptions are so potentially deadly.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 12:52 pm

“First, insurance companies that cover some or all of the costs of prescription medicines have pressured consumers to abandon local pharmacies in favor of warehoused bulk-purchasing operations that mail drugs via the U.S. Postal Service. For example, OptumRx mails half a billion prescription drugs annually on behalf of various insurance providers. Many of these medicines, such as hormones, insulin, and eyedrops, are temperature-sensitive, and are mailed in coolers that require on-time delivery to ensure the drugs contained are not only active, but have not deteriorated into a potentially dangerous form under inappropriate heat. Approximately 1 in 3 birth control prescriptions are filled by mail, particularly to parts of the country not served by Planned Parenthood.
Mailed medication deliveries are featured in both private and public insurance plans. According to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the Postal Service delivered 1.2 billion prescriptions in 2019.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 12:53 pm

“Second, other agencies in the U.S. government have sought to similarly reduce their costs by purchasing in bulk, warehousing, and then directly mailing medicines. Leading the government agency list is the Department of Veterans Affairs.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 12:54 pm

“Third, health requires food and housing. Some 21 percent of U.S. households were dependent on checks or vouchers for food, medical care, and housing in 2012, from 79 different programs. These include welfare payments, meal assistance, and Medicaid supplements. In 2019 (before this year’s massive surge in unemployment) 64,699,741 individuals were enrolled in Medicaid, 18 percent of adults used food assistance programs, and 39 percent of children were enrolled in one or more federal programs that involved mailed checks or paperwork. Since COVID-19 swept the United States, the ranks of the unemployed have increased, with millions more filing for unemployment benefits, Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act stimulus checks, and supplemental weekly payments—most delivered by mail.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 12:55 pm

“Fourth, most physicians’ offices, hospitals, and health insurance companies send medical bills and require on-time receipt of payments from health consumers via mail. If mailed payments fail to arrive on time, the individuals may be levied fines, be reported to various third-party debt collectors, or even face cancellation of insurance.
Fifth, the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns have increased all mail use, including for pharmacy and medical deliveries.”

      • September 3, 2020 at 12:55 pm

“According to a mid-August survey, 1 in 5 Americans expected a medicine delivery during the past week, and one-quarter of those deliveries were either delayed or never showed up.”

“It Has Come to This: Ignore the C.D.C.”
“The agency’s new guidelines are wrong, so states have to step up on their own to suppress the coronavirus”
by Harold Varmus and Rajiv Shah.
Harold Varmus is a former director of the National Institutes of Health.
Rajiv Shah is the president of the Rockefeller Foundation.
“We were startled to hear last week that the C.D.C. in a perplexing series of statements, had altered its testing guidelines to reduce the testing of asymptomatic people for the Coronavirus. These changes will undermine efforts to end the pandemic, slow the return to normal economic, educational, and social activities, and increase the loss of lives. Now in the face of a dysfunctional C.D.C. it is up to states, other institutions, and individuals to act.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 2:32 pm

Dr. Varmus was the first ever Nobel laureate to lead the N.I.H.
His research led to multiple breakthroughs in cancer detection and prevention. Maddow: “Dr. Varmus oversaw a massive expansion of world leadership on everything from AIDS to malaria, to stem cells… an unbelievably distinguished scientific and medical career.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 2:33 pm

      Maddow:
“That headline was jarring to me because of what I know about your history in science and medicine…”
      Dr. Varmus:
“Let me say first of all Rachel, that I didn’t write the headline. The headline was useful because it attracted a lot of readers, but I don’t want to be bashing the C.D.C. overall. The C.D.C. is a great institution that has served the nation well for many years. But they made a mistake in advocating that we test asymptomatic people less frequently. That’s the opposite of what we need for reasons that you just laid out very persuasively, when you talked about the mysterious Dr. Atlas.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 2:34 pm

      Dr. Varmus:
“We need to test people and diminish transmission of the virus.
And what I tried to do in that piece, along with Dr. Shah, was to explain first of all that testing of asymptomatic people is critical to control of the pandemic. That we have a lot of news tools to do that, we can do it cheaper, we can do it effectively. We don’t need to have…by the C.D.C. at the moment. Although frankly I am very disturbed by the idea that people who are not as familiar with the arguments as many of us are, are confused, justifiably confused by having different levels of advice from different components of what appears to be the Public Health system in the country. That’s the part of the dysfunction that’s very troubling. And I’ve tried to explain in that piece why the testing of asymptomatic people is so important.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 2:35 pm

      Dr. Varmus:
“Unlike other diseases, this one is transmitted by people who have no symptoms.
And we can prioritize testing. We can’t test everybody every day, that would be the extreme. But we can do some sensible things. We can say the following people should be tested immediately or within a few days of having contact with a person known to be infected. We know some people are at greater risk of transmitting the virus, for example if they go to a sporting event or to a large party, or go to work under conditions where they have to be close to their fellow workers. So we try to establish a sensible way to understand the way this virus is transmitted, and diminish that by urging that states and cities and institutions, including Colleges and workplaces where people mingle closely.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 2:37 pm

      Maddow:
“Dr. Varmus you’ve described it as a mistake by the C.D.C.
And I hear you when you talk about the confusing nature of conflicting levels of advice coming out of the C.D.C. And in your piece you describe it as dysfunctional. Part of the reason I wanted to talk to you tonight, is that I am worried that this wasn’t necessarily a mistake or something that was bungled by the C.D.C. With Dr. Atlas having this role at the White House, with the president’s change in language about what the U.S. goal is around this, I am worried that they are deliberately trying to reduce the number of people tested. So that we don’t find outbreaks. So that there is more spread because they have now become beholden to this idea that the more spread the better, that we can build up enough immunity. That that will somehow save us from having to do anything to really confine this virus. Because they don’t like what you have to do in order to try to limit its spread. If this is deliberate, if this is a herd immunity idea, how dangerous is that?”

    • September 3, 2020 at 2:38 pm

      Dr. Varmus:
“Well it’s dangerous. And I resonate with your concerns and I share some of them. But frankly in the piece that we wrote, rather than speculate about how decisions got made, what we were trying to do was to look at what was put in place on the C.D.C. website, and try to explain to people why this the wrong thing. And within the context of 1200 words you can’t…explore…the decisions that led to this change. And all I can do is regret the change, and try to change people’s minds about what we ought to be doing.”

      • September 3, 2020 at 2:41 pm

Dr. Harold Varmus, former Head of the N.I.H.
is one of 81 Nobel laureates in science and medicine
who issued a joint statement endorsing Joe Biden to be the next President of the United States.

Maddow reports on the strong VOTEVETS anti-Trump ads
that say ”Trump’s not leading, he’s losing”. Trump refuses to stand up for our national security is dangerous, refuses to stand up for our troops is humiliating, and the U.S. is being hurt by subservience to Russia.
    Now we see:
“DHS withheld July intelligence bulletin calling out Russian attack on Biden’s mental health”
“The draft bulletin, titled “Russia Likely to Denigrate Health of US Candidates to Influence 2020 Election,” was submitted to the agency’s legislative and public affairs office for review on July 7. The analysis was not meant for public consumption, but it was set to be distributed to federal, state and local law enforcement partners two days later, on July 9, the emails show.”
    https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/dhs-withheld-july-intelligence-bulletin-calling-russian-attack/story?id=72747130
“The Trump campaign has repeatedly engaged in a similar line of attack.” (ABC)
–The American people are being kept in the dark.

    • September 3, 2020 at 4:12 pm

The Novichok poisoning of Mr. Navalney in an attempted assassination is now confirmed.
There have been direct confrontations between Russian and U.S. troops. While European and world leaders speak out, Trump is silent on Russia. Maddow asks Michael McFaul, former Ambassador to Russia who has asked Trump to condemn Russia – what if Trump did respond?
      McFaul:
“Well it goes to the point you made earlier that he is weak before Putin.
He doesn’t push back on anything, and so Putin thinks he can do anything. Whether it’s running into our soldiers in Syria, or perhaps putting bounties on our soldiers’ heads in Afghanistan. And now…we don’t know all the details about what happened to Mr. Navalney. But he doesn’t do anything. And it means that we’re not leading the free world Rachel! So look at all those statements you just played. We’re not even trying to catch up to them. We are behind. And that lack of unity in the democratic world makes America weaker across the board. Not just with respect to Russia. But with respect to all of our adversaries around the world.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 4:14 pm

      Maddow:
“We have frequently recently seen the president exhibit this profound weakness and subservience.
And just meekness around the issue of Russia, even when other people in his own government won’t go along with it. In this case Secretary of State Mike Pompeo seems to be going along with it. He did a press conference today, on the day that Merkel confirmed that it was a Novichok poisoning. He did a press conference today, didn’t say a word about it. That said, we did get a National Security Council short series of tweets condemning it, and saying that the U.S. will work with allies to hold Russia accountable. I was happy to see that statement from the National Security Council. But that’s kind of strange right, to not have the president or the Secretary of State talking about it at all. And instead to have this kind of subtle unsigned statement from an amorphous body.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 4:15 pm

      McFaul:
“Correct. Because those words of that person – and you probably can’t even name that person, right, I can’t – means nothing compared to the words of the President of the United States. And I want to underscore that this is not just a one-off! President trump has said nothing about the democratic protests in Belarus. He’s said nothing about the foreign influence that Russia is doing right now in our democratic elections! In other words, he is not defending the sovereignty of the United States of America! And I think this is hard for people to understand. Like if the Chinese ships came into the San Francisco Bay, we would expect our government to tell us about that threat. Because it would be physical. We could see it. You could do a video of it. But because it’s a digital threat, we don’t see it, but it’s the same thing. Putin is violating our sovereignty. We should be pushing back on that.”

    • September 3, 2020 at 4:17 pm

      Maddow:
“This reporting today initially from ABC new…now confirmed…that the Homeland Security Department had an intelligence briefing ready to go. Warning not just generally that Russia is interfering in the election, but specifically if you see story lines out there about ‘Joe Biden having mental health issues’: Those are things that are being launched by the Russia government in Russian propaganda outlets, laundered through their social media avatars. And they’re trying to insert that story line into the U.S. election in order to hurt Biden’s campaign. They had that intelligence briefing ready to go. The Trump Administration has stopped it from going out. Does it matter to the American people to not be inoculated in that way against that form of interference?”

    • September 3, 2020 at 4:18 pm

      McFaul:
“Of course it does. It’s outrageous that they’re denying the American voters this information…
because the voters need to know what the Russians are doing. If they’re trying to influence our vote, at least letting them know that they’re doing it, might help them make more balanced decisions about what they do in November. I just think it’s absolutely outrageous. It’s not enough to debrief the intelligence committees. They need to be briefing the American people about these activities.”

There’s a bunch more in the thread.

You have to infer that the attitude that he has about service — not only considering those who serve as losers and suckers, but also his attitude that there has to be some monetary benefit — carries over to the office of the President. Just confirms what we know… that he is in it for the money. [Donating his salary and Javanka’s “working” for no salary does not come close to covering what he has spent on his weekly jaunts to his properties and the money they have made for their businesses by virtue of their positions.]

Sadly, he hasn’t kept his attitude or his actions a secret. It is often explained away as projection but is really confession. Republicans have condoned it by their inaction and their attempts to justify and explain. Journalists have abdicated their responsibility to hold him and his administration accountable.

        Yes he is.

But, he is OWNED by a dude who hates the American Promise with a volcanic intensity and is laughing his ass off around the clock because he’s 2 months away from victory.

No one has ever won a war they didn’t notice was engulfing them.

I lost count of how many “Pearl Harbors” Putin has launched since May 2016 before 20 Jan 2017.

In my infinitesimally small way, I’ll keep trying until it’s 4 Nov and “I told you so” has never been in my lexicon though it certainly could have been – more than once.

        Goodnight TOD.

Now we know why Trump refuse to go after Putin about the bounties Russia put on our troops head. Most Commander in chief would be mad as hell if they thought something like that happen.
