This is a good piece about the different levels of stress we’re feeling and how to set more realistic expectations for ourselves, especially high achievers like all of us here.

Speaker Pelosi in her weekly press conference:
“Don’t pay any attention to what the president is saying because it is all designed to suppress the vote.
He’s going to have law enforcement — that’s in their playbook. We’ve seen their playbook. It’s in their playbook. They’ll have people intimidated to vote by having ICE Agents or other law enforcement there to instill fear in people as they show up. Why are they here? It’s scary. But ignore that. It’s a suppress the vote tactic, as is the suppressing of the ability of the postal system to deliver on its responsibility to treat first-class — ballots as first-class mail and to deliver in a timely fashion and not — and not ignore the need for overtime.
So all I would say to the final part of your question is, ignore them.
Make a plan to vote. Do so to vote early so that we will have an outcome that is clear,
as close to election night as possible. I say that because the more that vote by mail, there may be some counting after the election. But I hope that our victory will be so big it will be so big that it will be so clear.”

Dr. Jill Biden’s speech at the 2020 National Democratic Convention.

  20. August 22, 2020 at 6:59 pm

    Former 2nd Lady Jill Biden:
Speaking to Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, Nicole Wallace on August 20th, just prior to VP Biden’s stunning speech.

    • August 22, 2020 at 7:03 pm

Maddow: “Your political life as a non-politician, but as somebody who has been through all of this,
you have been through the lesser iterations of this before. You have been at your husband’s side as he ran for office before, with him through Barack Obama choosing him as his running mate, and that campaign, and the re-election campaign, all the conventions that’s brought you to over the years. How different is this now? Now that he is the nominee, now that you may very well be First Lady – how different is this?”
      Dr. Biden:
“You know this is really different and it’s really exciting. And you’re right, you know.
It just wasn’t the right time before but this time feels different. So many people kept coming up to me. I have to say we did not plan on running. But after this president was elected, so many people came up to me and kept saying, “Jill, Joe has to run, he has to run”. And then Charlottesville happened. And this president said there were “good people on both sides”. And Joe just couldn’t hear that. And so we decided to run.”

    • August 22, 2020 at 7:05 pm

Maddow: “Do you agree with some of the starkness of the warnings that we have heard his week,
for example from both Michelle and Barack Obama during this Convention. The former First Lady warning it can and will get much worse than it is now if he (Trump) is re-elected. The former president flat out warning that we’re at risk of losing our democracy depending on this. Is that the way that you see it as well?
      Dr Biden;
“Yes. You know I think that what Barack and Michelle said is right.
I mean things could get much worse. We can’t take four more years. So you know Joe is going to lead us in a new direction. And that’s what people have to think about. His type of leadership, he’ll lead with empathy. And he’ll just be a much stronger president. And kindness and compassion. You know Joe knows what it’s like. His father lost his job. Joe understand that. His parents couldn’t pay for the College that he wanted to go to. Joe understands that. And you know the tragedy and the loss that Joe and our family has been through. And with so many people dealing with loss during this time of the pandemic, they will have a president in Joe Biden who knows what loss feels like. And who will be empathetic.”

    • August 22, 2020 at 7:07 pm

Reid: “I used to call my Mom Doc, because she was also an educator with a Ph.D.
And so I want to talk to you about the venue that you chose for your speech when you were speaking to the American people, and introducing yourself. You know teachers and students and parents of students are very traumatized and scared right now. It’s a really difficult time to decide what you’re going to do with your kids because of COVID. How much do you think that former Vice President Biden needs to convey that sense? Do you think this is going to be more about comforting the American people, inspiring the American people, or really speaking directly to those kinds of fears? Especially those fears of teachers and school staff and parents?”
      Dr. Biden:
“Well you know Joe is going to be all of those. Because Joe will have a strategy to lead us forward.
And he’s already working on that strategy. And this pandemic has just pointed out so many inequities in Education. That’s why I chose to go back to my – that was my original classroom in Brandywine High School. That was why I chose it go back there because so many educators and students are calling me and saying what do we do, what do we do? People are feeling so anxious. But we have to listen to the experts and the doctors. And when they say it’s safe to go back, we’ll go back. Listen, nobody wants to be in the classroom more than educators, I can tell you that from my own experience. I can’t wait to get back. But we have to be careful. We have to be safe. There’s nothing more precious to us than America’s children.”

    • August 22, 2020 at 7:08 pm

Wallace: “Dr. Biden, I know from working for President Bush that the attacks on a candidate or an office holder are most acutely felt by the people who love them most. And Donald Trump got impeached over his effort to attack your husband, smear your family, and weaken your husband politically. How are you going to protect your family and yourself next week?”
      Dr. Biden:
“You know we knew this was going to happen. These are all distractions. When we decided to run, we knew this was going to be part of the campaign. But I looked at Joe and I said, Joe we’ve been through the worst thing that could ever happen to us. And so you know we have strong shoulders, and going forward Joe is just going to talk about the future, and what he’s going to do and his plans. So Donald Trump, he is trying to distract the American public from the issues that Joe is going to put forth.”

    • August 22, 2020 at 7:09 pm

Maddow: “This will be one of the nights of his life after so many decades in public service. What’s he like under this kind of pressure and big events?”
      Dr. Biden:
“He’s at home. He’s out on the porch with our grandkids. He’s doing what he loves. He’s relaxed. He’s confident. You know Joe knows who he is. He knows his vision. He knows where he wants to take the country. Joe will be a very confident president.”

Hi ,Meta. Apparently The Idiot’s wife didn’t have much to do with the decision making re the garden changes.

      //… …….

Relax. It’s not HER design! It’s a much-needed upgrade planned by two very prominent landscape architects and their firms, along with the Committee for the Preservation of the White House and the keepers of the 18-acre property – the National Park Service.

But if you just skim the 241-page Rose Garden Landscape Report that was attached to the announcement, as I did, you’ll see that it’s been in the works for quite a while. You might even notice that the groups consulted for the project include some of the most respected people in the DC area.

Moving on, Kathy Jentz, editor of Washington Gardener Magazine, wrote in an email to me:

“I actually don’t have an issue with it – looking at the plans it is really a tweak and partial restoration plus
installing new underground irrigation and drainage pipes that are failing on the site.

Of course, certain media outlets are hyping it to make it political and about her, but I think this is actually
staff-driven (national park service) and long overdue.”

Gotta agree with Kathy. Though surely the announcement could have been handled differently – maybe had it come from a National Park Service bureaucrat instead of Melania herself? Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen.

      …………….. //

Abd looking at maps from the Birmingham University Paleo Landscapes Project:
Only 9,000 years years ago, Ireland was still connected to Scotland.
A mere 18,000 years ago the entire British Isles was connected to France. Gradually the Atlantic flooded and separated them. Think what will happen c/o global warming…the melting of Greenland is all the time

Senator Kamala Harris’ speech at the National Democratic Convention to accept the nomination for
Vice President of the United States.

  44. August 23, 2020 at 2:07 pm

“I Know a Predator When I See One.”
“Kamala Harris Takes Aim at Trump, Accepts Historic VP Nomination”
“Senator Kamala Harris has formally accepted the Democratic vice-presidential nomination, becoming the first woman of color to run on a major party presidential ticket. We feature part of her historic speech.”
    Amy Goodman:
“During her Democratic National Convention acceptance address,
Senator Kamala Harris addressed the coronavirus crisis, naming President Trump directly.”

    • August 23, 2020 at 2:09 pm

      Senator Kamala Harris:
“Donald Trump’s failure of leadership has cost lives and livelihoods.
If you’re a parent struggling with your child’s remote learning, or you’re a teacher struggling on the other side of that screen, you know what we’re doing right now is not working. And we are a nation that is grieving, grieving the loss of life, the loss of jobs, the loss of opportunities, the loss of normalcy and, yes, the loss of certainty. And while this virus touches us all, we’ve got to be honest: It is not an equal opportunity offender. Black, Latino and Indigenous people are suffering and dying disproportionately. And this is not a coincidence. It is the effect of structural racism; of inequities in education and technology, healthcare and housing, job security and transportation; the injustice in reproductive and maternal healthcare, in the excessive use of force by police, and in our broader criminal justice system. This virus, it has no eyes, and yet it knows exactly how we see each other and how we treat each other.
And let’s be clear: There is no vaccine for racism. We have got to do the work, for George Floyd, for Breonna Taylor, for the lives of too many others to name, for our children and for all of us.
We’ve got to do the work to fulfill that promise of equal justice under law, because here’s the thing:
None of us are free until all of us are free.
So, we’re at an inflection point. The constant chaos leaves us adrift.
The incompetence makes us feel afraid. The callousness makes us feel alone. It’s a lot.
And here’s the thing: We can do better and deserve so much more. We must elect a president who will bring something different, something better, and do the important work, a president who will bring all of us together — Black, white, Latino, Asian, Indigenous — to achieve the future we collectively want. We must elect Joe Biden.”

    • August 23, 2020 at 2:21 pm
