“America’s Schools Are a Moral and Medical Catastrophe”
“A guide to understanding the science, and the politics,
preventing U.S. children from being educated this year.” (Laurie Garrett)
Question 1: “Should a national-scale school reopening be considered, at all?
Emphatically, no. The state of Florida’s data shows that 13 percent of children who have been tested for the novel coronavirus were found to be infected, and there’s a gradient of infection downward with age: Only 16 percent of these positive cases are in children 1 to 4 years old, whereas 29 percent are in those 15 to 17 years old. In Nueces County, Texas, 85 children under age 2 have tested positive for the coronavirus since March, killing one of them. The infections were likely caught from parents or older siblings. A South Korean government survey of 60,000 households discovered that adults living in households that had an infected child aged 10 to 19 years had the highest rate of catching the coronavirus—more so than when an infected adult was present. Nearly 19 percent of people living with an infected teenager went on to test positive for the virus within 10 days. A Kaiser Family Foundation study says some 3.3 million adults over 65 in the United States live in a home with at least one school-aged child, putting the elders at special risk. A one-size policy absolutely does not fit all:
School risk is a reflection of the larger coronavirus prevalence in a community.
A blanket national school policy makes no sense whatsoever.”

Trump: “We’re going to all of the cities, any of the cities. We’re going to put in 50,000, 60,000 people who really know what they’re doing. They’re strong. They’re tough.”
Cross: “We’re living in a world where Secret police are detaining protestors without probable cause.”
Anne Applebaum: (Atlantic, “Twilight of Democracy”)
“I think the important thing to understand about what Trump is doing,
is that these are not tactics designed to solve the problem.
Why is he sending Customs and Border Patrol, Coastguard, TSA…into American cities? These are people who don’t have training in riot control, who aren’t used to dealing with political protest, and whose main goal seems to be to create more chaos. Of course this isn’t full on dictatorship…but what he is doing is creating pictures that are designed to show other Americans how tough he is.”
Applebaum:
“So the fact that these men and women (maybe) are wearing camouflage, they look heavily armed,
they’re wearing face masks, this is designed show and act out dominance: “Look – we’re pushing back against the liberal America, the urban America, the chaotic America that you’re all ‘afraid’ of, and this is how we’re going to win the argument.”
This way of using troops and using photographs of violence is something we have seen in other authoritarian states, particularly in Russia, where Putin in 2014 used pictures of violence to imply that the democracy movement in Ukraine was really some kind of nazi fascist uprising, and that he was then putting it down. So this is a tactic we’ve seen in other parts of the world.”

The boy from Troy
Whose Mother no doubt
Did not want him to go
Traveled to the bridge
So long ago, so long ago
He marched with Dr. King
And spoke at the podium before him
They had to tone down his words
Because he spoke the harsh truth
And while he spoke the truth
He learned so well
And taught others
And I’m guessing for his Mother
To tone down the words
Forgive the others
Make his impassioned plea
Make it a learning event
On the road to Congress
Where he spent long years
And became its conscience
Educated more youthful soldiers
Boys and girls from Troy
And everywhere
Never to be taken down
And told not to be so harsh
Again.
Because he found his voice
He found his voice.
Today he is driven in a hearse
Through the streets of Washington
To pay respects at the
National Museum of African American
History and Culture
That he worked to achieve and the
Lincoln Memorial and
Black Lives Matter Lane and
the U.S. Capitol
And be driven nearby the souls who
Loved him
Some waiting in the streets.
It’s touching
It’s hard to watch.
I am so glad I got the chance
To witness the history from afar
I saw the boy from Troy speak
Before Dr. King at the podium
I saw him visit
Black Lives Matter plaza this year
I saw him in Congress
Sometimes during late-night hours
When he was speaking up
And standing up
For his fellow Americans
Gone but not forgotten
A treasure sent for only a little while
Borrowed from his Mother
So he could dedicate his life to
Getting in good trouble and now
His life has space at the museum
His life mattered
Our hearts break
Good trouble.

Congressman John Lewis was an American hero—a giant, whose shoulders upon we all stand. As John Lewis takes his final trip to the U.S. Capitol, we remember to continue his fight for justice and progress, and never give up or give in. pic.twitter.com/1e7Kb5Khmb
“Never Give Up, Never Give In. Get Into Good Trouble”…in tears as I hear the words of John Lewis ring out in the Capitol Rotunda as he lies in state….. my heart aches with sadness, pride, and renewed purpose. Rest In Peace, Good Sir. pic.twitter.com/FwQpV1pY11
REMEMBERING JOHN LEWIS: “You must find a way to get in the way,” the voice of Rep. John Lewis rings in the Capitol Rotunda, during a ceremony honoring his life and legacy as he lies in state. “You must find a way to get in trouble, good trouble, necessary trouble.” pic.twitter.com/dLb7JiOjRK
The casket of Rep. John Lewis is now in Washington D.C. He is the first Black lawmaker to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda—considered to be one of the highest American honors 🙏🏾#7newspic.twitter.com/zsnkaK9Lwp
We’ve needed a new preisdent for a lot more than this already. There’s no point in adding more of the stench of hypocrisy than Mitch McConnell is already providing today. Let Twitler go somewhere else. He would bring nothing honorable and just ruin this solemn occasion.
"John was revered and beloved on both sides of the aisle…God truly blessed America with the life and leadership of John Lewis," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says, about civil rights icon John Lewis. https://t.co/E8tUaBrR3U

The service for the late John Lewis ends with @WhipClyburn delivering the serenity prayer, which begins famously, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference." #scpolpic.twitter.com/RsnHLqAF6u
I just heard Dr. Wintley Phipps deliver one of the greatest renditions of “Amazing Grace” EVER to uplift the life&legacy of the honorable John Lewis. It was a song for the ages! Listening to this is well worth 4 minutes of your day. https://t.co/7YUsLvZjeDpic.twitter.com/LHIvG7hGG5
Because everyone there understands his significance. You, however, are an ignorant racist. 99 days is 99 days too long. Just go away.
BREAKING: Asked if he planned to pay his respects to late civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, who will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol, Pres. Trump says, “No, I won’t be going. No.” https://t.co/34G6GioSS2pic.twitter.com/tx1afBKwYQ
It is fitting that today as we memorialize John Lewis in the Capitol Rotunda, we honor his memory by renaming this legislation with which he is so closely identified.
Enacting the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act is the best thing we can do to honor this American hero.
Meanwhile… for anybody here worrying about the fate of our almost-first-black-GOP-999-president.

“Of course this isn’t full on dictatorship …”
Well, if it gets any more ‘full on’ people will be being abducted from their homes!
Throughout history, the record of denial of the blatantly obvious that preceded societal collapse is a lesson most Americans have never studied.
Every MINUTE Trump remains in POWER is a step toward the total collapse of whatever Democracy remains in America.

Yes, it was so touching to hear his voice, one last time ❤
This shook me as I realized that we won’t be privileged to hear that voice in that chamber again.
