“so he’s doing everything he can now to suppress the vote and delegitimize the election.”

Including impeding the operations of the USPS. His appointed postmaster has eliminated overtime. As a result, mail delivery is delayed. So imagine how a deluge of mail resulting from the increase in mail-in ballots will be handled.

Hopefully, each county elections office is taking this into consideration along with how to deal with in-person voting during a pandemic. (The SoS will blame them if things go badly anyway.) Will they process absentee ballot applications in a timely manner? Will they have alternative means to return the ballots other than USPS…and will this be clearly communicated? Will there be enough people on hand to process the increase in mail-in ballots?

Whether voting in-person or absentee, people want some degree of confidence that their vote will be counted.

For the primary, my county has special boxes at specific places where you could drop off your ballot. Avoided the need for postage and hopefully lessened the burden on carriers. I’m hoping we have the same for November.

        • July 21, 2020 at 5:42 pm

Yeah, my county did as well. I think Fulton County is the same. I made use of one of the drop-off locations during the primary to make sure that it arrived by 7PM on primary day.

I think a bigger problem, though, is that a lot of people did not receive their absentee ballot in time, if at all.

  26. July 21, 2020 at 12:11 pm

He’s already laid out his rationale.”Rigged 2020 election,” he tweeted last month.
“Millions of mail-in ballots will be printed by foreign countries, and others. It will be the scandal of our times!”

    • July 21, 2020 at 12:12 pm

“Here’s the scenario Trump is planning for.
On the evening of 3 November, he loses the popular vote by a margin even greater than the 3 million votes by which Hillary beat him in 2016 – but the count of votes cast on the day puts him narrowly ahead in one or two key states. He promptly declares victory, claiming that the millions of votes that were cast as absentee ballots – by voters anxious to avoid polling stations because of Covid-19 – should be disqualified as fraudulent. He has a motive to do that, since mail-in votes often skew Democratic. And he has a precedent for it: in a tight senate race in Florida in 2018, Trump urged the state to stop counting the votes and go with the election night results, which favored Republicans.”

    • July 21, 2020 at 12:15 pm

“Let’s say he makes that same move in the three midwestern battlegrounds in November.
Republicans are in charge of the state legislatures in all three.
Now here’s where it gets nerdily arcane, but bear with me.
Those Republican legislatures could refuse both to certify their state results and to send a slate of representatives to the electoral college, which has to meet by 14 December. Biden’s lawyers would plead his case all the way to the supreme court, but that court likes to stay out of elections. It could plausibly instruct the electoral college to meet on 14 December, with or without the disputed states. If it meets without them, and neither Trump nor Biden can reach the 270 electoral college votes required to win, then the constitution throws the question to the House of Representatives. Democrats control that body, but here’s the thing. Under the rules, the house would make its decision state-by-state, with one vote per state – so that tiny Republican Wyoming would have as much say as populous, Democratic California.
By that count, Republican states would outvote Democratic ones by 26 to 24 – and Trump would
      remain president.”

    • July 21, 2020 at 12:23 pm

      Please forgive me.
Because we have to understand completely everything the right wing could pull to put Trump in office to advance their fascist agenda. We must be fully prepared for the evil in play. Peventing citizens from voting is for starters. Failing all of that, the american fascists will try and disqualify the election results.

I had said that with her foreign affairs knowledge Susan Rice would make an excellent Secretary of State. I do not remember which Presidential appointments need to be confirmed by the Senate. I think VP might be totally the President’s choice whereas the other choices need to be confirmed. Correct? If so the GOP are known for their obstruction maybe Biden has to take that into consideration when choosing a VP and other offices.

“Presidential appointments with Senate confirmation (PAS): These positions require a congressional hearing and a confirmation vote of the full Senate under the Appointments Clause of the United States Constitution.[4] As at 2016, PAS positions included 1,212 senior positions, including the Cabinet secretaries and their subordinates at the Deputy Secretary, Under Secretary, and Assistant Secretary levels; the heads of most independent agencies; and ambassadors.[1] It also includes United States Attorneys and United States Marshals.[2] The Presidential Appointment Efficiency and Streamlining Act of 2011 reclassified about 170 PAS positions to PA, to no longer needing Senate confirmation.”

Have we played this guessing game yet on TOD? Not asking for your particular choice, but who do you think could be among the women on Joe Biden’s short list to run as his VP? I’m sure you know he said four are black women, at this point.

I’m thinking possibly Sen. Kamala Harris, Rep. Val Demings, Rep. Karen Bass (only because she went along with a comment on MSNBC earlier today that she was on the list – personally hadn’t heard her name before), Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, and Amb. Susan Rice. I really can’t see Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s wanting to be on the list, but maybe she is, along with Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

      July 21, 2020 at 8:50 pm

My choice has been Kamala…but a group of us Dems (here in California) discussed the VP choice last week. Someone stated that yes we in California would like Kamala, but how does she help bring in others? Some like her fighting “attitude” but some feel that “attitude” can be a turn off to those middle of the road voters that we need to capture. They feel she has a “negative” effect on those voters. Rep. Val Demings was the choice for the majority of our group. She is so well spoken, smart, and having 27 plus years in the Police Dept. and being the police chief in Orlando…that will help push back Trumps Law and Order campaign that he is ushering in. She has the police experience to deal with what is happening in our streets. She is from a southern state too. After hearing the thoughts of so many here in California I would love to see Rep. Demings in that role. I love Kamala, and she would be my pick for Attorney General in the Biden campaign.

        July 21, 2020 at 10:11 pm

I love Rep. Demings, too! I’m going to stay with Sen. Harris. We shall soon find out (hopefully soon!).

    • 94 Don
      July 21, 2020 at 9:36 pm

My choice is Kamala, but I think Joe put pressure on himself by saying that there are 4 Black Women on the list. And if he don’t pick a Black Women everyone will say “How can 4BW get on the list and not one of them got picked.” I think Joe needs to make a selection so we can get busy turning out the vote, enough with the drama.

      • 95 jacquelineoboomer
        July 21, 2020 at 10:13 pm

I’m hoping he wouldn’t have put that pressure on himself if he hadn’t (secretly or otherwise) made his selection – and now must wait for the vetting. Let’s hurry up, people!

    • July 21, 2020 at 9:47 pm

Klobuchar removed herself from the running, saying she believes it should be a Black woman.

I think the four Black women are Susan Rice, Kamala Harris, Val Demings and Karen Bass. Warren and Whitmer are the others.

My preference is Senator Harris because she’s full of great ideas, she’s a thinker AND a doer, and I think she has the energy and the disposition to run circles around the GOP.

It’s just a hunch but I think he’s going to choose Susan Rice.

        July 21, 2020 at 11:38 pm

She’s my Senator, but I forgot to add her name! We have a wealth of Democratic women who’d rise to the occasion!

    • July 21, 2020 at 10:49 pm

IMHO, there are only two on the list that check ALL of the blocks; Harris and Rice. They are both a generation younger than Biden, and are qualified to take the reigns on Day 1. Rice has the edge on foreign policy; Harris on domestic. Harris is a joyful warrior, and her spouse is known and beloved on the campaign trail; the #KHive is a devoted rapid response truth squad; she has strong ties and appeals to a broad range of Democratic demographics. Rice and family are untested and unknown on the campaign trail; her son is a conservative republican; Benghazi will be the new “emails…”

Harris will be an outstanding VP; Rice, an exceptional SoS.
