    PEER EFFECTS.
    THRESHOLDS.
    Been thinking:
This may well apply to attacks on us by police officers….
“When the choices people make in a given situation depend on what others around them are doing….
Granovetter imagined a hypothetical crowd of agitators on the brink of violence,
where each members has the same ‘threshold’ for acting out that depends on how many others are.
if one member has a threshold of zero, he will trigger without provocation.
If a second actor has a threshold of one, the first actor will set him off.
If another actor has a threshold of two, he will then trigger, and so on.
The point is that in an environment where every is responding to what everyone else does, a single action can trigger a series of knock-on effects that unravel into total chaos.”
    (Can It Happen Here? Sunstein)

    • June 5, 2020 at 11:52 am

“The point is that in an environment where everyone is responding to what everyone else does,
a single action can trigger a series of knock-on effects that unravel into total chaos.
But Granovetter’s analysis also showed that this unraveling is highly susceptible to small deviations
in the underlying distributions of thresholds.
For example, if there is not one with a threshold of one and 2 actors with a threshold of two – a tiny, probably undetectable difference in underlying preferences – the violence will stop with the just the first action; no unraveling will occur.
To an observer, the two scenarios could not look more different.”
(refs to Mark Granovettier, “Threshold models of Collective Behavior.”)
–Just thought something could be learned from this re: police brutality and insanity.

Heart wrenching – and heartwarming – at the same time! Each of us must stand for our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren … together. Even if we did it the first time, back when we were teenagers ourselves.

My youngest daughter and her family live around a half mile from downtown St Paul, MN. There have been police vehicles checking out their street and parking their large flatbed trucks near the children’s park with playground. My five year old Autistic granddaughter blurted out “Is that the bad guys that kill people?” Sometimes it is surprising what young children are taking in.

  21. June 5, 2020 at 12:37 pm

The stunning Masha Gessen (New Yorker) talking to Chris Hayes.
She tries not use the fascism:
”But it is time that we used this word.
The reason it’s time is because Trump is so clearly deploying the visual and rhetorical symbols of fascism.
Visually he imagines what power looks like…fascist image…it looks like overwhelming force
and of course it sounds like overwhelming force as well…
The word ‘dominate’ in his phone call with governors…he talks about sending in the military.
Does he know that that is fascism? Does he care? It doesn’t matter. This is his idea of power.
He has signaled this many times before. Many times he has expressed his endless admiration for the autocrats of the world, and now he is performing this. He is making a claim to this kind of power.
And a power grab always begins as a performance of sorts.
There is always a claim made, and if it is accepted, if the performance is believed, then it takes hold.
And we’re at that critical moment now.”

When I heard it I did not believe it either. Trump and his administration are crooks.

  23. June 5, 2020 at 12:41 pm

“Trump is now performing his idea of power has he imagines it.
    In his intuition, power is autocratic; it affirms the superiority of one nation and one race;
it asserts total domination; and it mercilessly suppresses all opposition.
Whether or not he is capable of grasping the concept, Trump is performing fascism.”

Reporter: “Today you can see another significant federal law enforcement presence here
in what’s really been kind of a stunning militarization of city streets in Washington, DC.
These officers are federal law enforcement of some variety. I would love to tell you more, but they are not wearing any identifying badges, insignias, name plates. They won’t tell me where they’re from or who they’re with.”
    Rachel Maddow:
“Whenever countries do this in other overseas invasions they don’t want to call invasions, we call these “little green men”. People who are in military or paramilitary garb and serving that sort of function, but nobody owns them. Nobody says who they are, nobody admits who they are.”

    • June 5, 2020 at 2:22 pm

Maddow: “As protests against the killing of George Floyd have continued for another day…it’s not just D.C National Guard patrolling the streets and D.C. cops. It’s not even just the National Guard troops from 10 other states that are in D.C. that the WH flew in. There’s also this strange other force on the streets.
Law enforcement officers who may be, at least it seems like they are law enforcement officers, wearing no identifying insignia for any law enforcement agency. No name badges. And in many cases even when they’re asked by protestors or the press, they will not say who they are, or who pays them.
Take these guys in helmets and tactical vests.
A reporter asked who they were with.
They would say only “the Department of Justice”. Which is not really an answer. (So if there’s a generic Department of Justice police force, that explains that.) Another reporter asked this group of gentlemen in riot gear if they were with the Bureau of Prisons, which is one of the federal agencies that has deployed some officers in Washington. They responded to that question with one word “Maybe”.
Maybe we’re with the Bureau of Prisons. That’s cute.”

    • June 5, 2020 at 2:24 pm

Maddow: “How do we know these people are who they say they are at all?
IF they’ll say anything at all. We just take their word for it that they’re with the Department of Justice, or maybe the Bureau of Prisons? And why are these guys wearing no badges, nameplates, no insignias?
How does that help them in what they’re doing in the streets? I mean there’s a reason a police officer with the power to stop you, detain you, arrest you, use physical force against you, there’s a reason a police officer has a badge number and a name in plain sight. The only reason to take those identifying markings off is to avoid accountability for what they’re doing. Right?
If they do anything wrong it makes it a deniable offense not just by them personally, (if you can pick them out of line up.) But also by anybody who might potentially be held accountable by having ordered that offensive or injurious or illegal action against you.”

    • June 5, 2020 at 2:26 pm

Maddow: “If these are just randomly unidentifiable people with no names,
no agencies associated with them, what do you do if they violate your rights, or hurt you?
How do you know who did it? How do you know issued their orders?
But the other, and honestly darker prospect here, even darker than apparently federal law enforcement being deployed in this fashion against Americans in American street, the even darker prospect here is this: I mean who’s to say these guys ARE law enforcement?
What’s to distinguish these unidentified supposedly federal forces,
from random self-motivated guys with guns who want to come down to these protests and play Civil Wars as private citizens? Or just hang and and be seen with their military-style weaponry and their off-the-shelf tactical gear? Especially in the middle of a big rowdy protest…(photos of civilians with guns).
If one of these guys shoots you, we’re supposed to fall back on “maybe” he was a cop?
Maybe he was a soldier? Just submit to their authority and try not to get shot by them?
And if you do – mmm.”

    • June 5, 2020 at 2:27 pm

      WHO’S NEXT?
Trump using federal forces in Washington, D.C.
“Mayor Muriel Bowser talks with Rachel Maddow about how Donald Trump is interfering in the policing of her city by deploying an unidentifiable federal force,
and cautions Americans in other states
that this may be just the beginning.”

  39. June 5, 2020 at 2:37 pm

How do we know if the unidentified ‘green men” wearing tactical gear,
who could potentially get away with murder and maiming,
are not neo-Nazis or funded by Putin? My bet is on Trump and Barr, but how about Saudi Arabia?
Why assume? Why don’t we know? When will we know exactly who or what is behind their presence?
When it is too late to stop a planned or spontaneous event?

I am seething with anger, but this time it is different. I am usually at a barely perceptible boil, a degree or two below the boiling point. Which if truth be told most African Americans stay at, the result of a condition known as “Whatever While Being Black.” I am presently in the middle of a two-week vacation, some vacation I might add. I told my better half that I was thinking about cancelling my second week of vacation and going back to work. She asked me why would I want to cancel my vacation and go back to work? I told her “I want to be in the mix.” She said, “you’ve been in the mix your entire life, what’s so different about this time?” I did not have a reason; well I did have a reason. But I did not want to have her worrying about me and I did not argue with her. Deep down inside I just want to go somewhere and confront someone, anyone, about anything. 53 years old and one year away from retirement which by the way I should be looking forward to, but no, instead I am looking for a fight.
