I missed it too, but does anyone know if it was covered on all the media, or just on cable news?

I don’t know for sure but I don’t know where it was covered in full. I’ve seen snippets of it during the day. Lawrence O’Donnell mentioned Joe’s speech throughout a good portion of his show tonight – glad, finally!

It’s been a really freaking hard week for Black people. Hell, it’s been a pretty freaking hard month with the revelations of Ahmaud Arbery’s murder, Breonna Taylor’s murder, George Floyd’s murder and the countless others whose names have not made national news. The Coronavirus crises disproportionately affecting and killing us. The economic downturn disproportionately affecting us. It’s been a messed up year.

We do not need harmful white people and non-Black POC who think this is some kind of fun gap week or month for them. If you’re not going to be helpful, stay home and STFU. It’s not enough that you consume our culture, now you also make mockery and light of our pain? We have had it with your callousness.

Black people are out here like the walking wounded. We’re showing up to work, we’re showing up for others, we’re trying to present professional faces and demeanor, we’re doing what we can to continue to function, but we are TRAUMATIZED. Anxiety is on 10. PTSD is on 10. Nerves are on 10. Waking up crying, going to bed crying, insomnia, trying to find what little bit of joy we can, but still there’s a shadow that weighs heavy.

This shit seeps into our bones. It is heavy. It affects our long term health. Watching people you know who have had no choice but to be stoic and strong all their lives, breaking down. Watching that moment the innocence is stripped from cherished Black children’s eyes as they realize how cruel the world is to them. Watching Black teenagers have to experience and consume Black death over and over again with no quantifiable justice and seeing them realize they do not walk the same path as their white and non-Black POC cohorts. This is not something that Black people can walk away from. When the news cycles and protests die down, this horror still lives with us because it’s our everyday lived experiences. Amidst the bountiful culture we create, this horror both large and small still walks beside us.

It has been really heavy and we do not need you dipping your toes in and dancing around like it’s a fucking rave. You’re all the way in or you can GTFO.

“An accommodating GOP, Trump are transforming America into a dictatorship.”
“This administration and Republican leadership have corrupted the justice system, purged and persecuted nonpartisan military personnel and government employees to install apparatchiks in their place, regularly encouraged paramilitary activity among supporters, thwarted any efforts of legitimate legislative oversight, claimed absolute immunity for Trump, promoted propagandistic media while falsely discrediting the accuracy of legitimate news, manipulated the courts, marbled the administration and judiciary with unqualified lackeys, driven contracts to supporters, used the U.S. Treasury to reward friends, attempted to coerce foreign governments into leveling false charges at political rivals, eagerly courted supportive dictators around the world, excused friends from their crimes while seeking political prosecutions of enemies on false charges, sought to bend our intelligence agencies to partisan ends, threatened a free press with retaliation, revised or suppressed historical records that were unfavorable, publicly smeared perceived opponents, sabotaged fair elections, created a cult of personality around its leader, distributed government largesse based on fealty to the leader, defined critics as subhuman, traded in race-baiting and nationalism, caged children and broken up desperate families, defined all events solely in terms of how they affect the leader, shattered revered institutions protecting Americans, reviled our allies while embracing our enemies, and attempted to call into question the validity of elections that go against the leader while intimating that they might attempt to postpone elections if the leader’s poll numbers are weak. And that catalog of horrors is the abbreviated list.”

“These are the core attributes the world has used for decades to identify dictators. And these actions are actively afoot in America today, and they are gaining greater velocity with each day we grow closer
      to the election.”

    • June 2, 2020 at 1:07 pm

“Any realist cannot ignore the wanton destruction of the system of checks and balances and nonpartisan government and the congealing of despotic abuses. One must conclude we are living in the early days of an authoritarian regime.”

    • June 2, 2020 at 1:08 pm

“The GOP knows it will fade into history soon without drastic action,
so it’s holding onto power by any means necessary and scheming to permanently tilt the scales in its favor.
True Americans — the spiritual descendants of Madison and his fellow founders, who recognize Trump and those around him as the vandals they are — know they can’t let that happen.
But we all need to realize that the emergency is no longer on the horizon, coming gradually closer.
It’s here. We’re living it. And only we can put a stop to it.”

Black artists are using their voice, money, and bodies and you have these billion dollar corporations putting out what amounts to a thoughts and prayers PR statements.

OPEN. YOUR. PURSE. Your statements should be accompanied by large continued funds to organizations doing the work. Your statement should also be accompanied by detailed comprehensive policy on how your company is going to ensure that your workplace across the globe is inclusive, open, holds each other accountable, and your hiring practices are transparent.

    I get it.
You think to yourself how can somebody that dumb get you in a corner and get you up against the wall?
But by now we know why he’s willing to break all kinds of laws and ethical norms. Been too easy to look away, maybe hope he’ll latch on to another distraction next week. But actually he has been moving the needle away from democracy towards unilateral control since taking office. GOP officials are with him.
Proto-authoritarians try it out first. They do it in steps, see how you react, see if it’s time to ramp things up.
Timing is everything and we are tired…we’ve been snowed relentlessly.

As Stoughton points out, the warrior model of policing is steeped in dominance as a response to fear, whereas a guardian mentality is rooted in the long-term strategy of building partnerships with the community via trust. Until police reform is grounded in being clear about the difference, it will fail.

Just my today’s random thought. 💞😷

Today’s funny-not-funny optic @ WH: Virus45 wanted a fence (aka wall) to keep those darn protesters away from WH actual fence. As if they could breach that fence, run around 17 acres, maneuver the WH snipers, Secret Service, etc. & get to his sorry arse. Puhleese! Visual tonight is this high fence, some kind of armed military police on one side, protesters in summer wear, bikes, masks, etc., on other side. (Gotta say, those armed whatevers didn’t look like they wanted to be there, behind a chain link fence, looking @ their fellow citizens.) Oy, Virus45, how’s yr cage now? 👀😎
