*75 Things White People Can Do for Racial Justice*

Google whether your local police department currently outfits all on-duty police officers with a body-worn camera and requires that the body-worn camera be turned on immediately when officers respond to a police call. If they don’t, write to your city or town government representative and police chief to advocate for it. The racial make-up of your town doesn’t matter — This needs to be standard everywhere. Multiply your voice by soliciting others to advocate as well, writing on social media about it, writing op-eds, etc.

Google whether your city or town currently employs evidence-based police de-escalation trainings. The racial make-up of your town doesn’t matter — This needs to be standard everywhere. Write to your city or town government representative and police chief and advocate for it. Multiply your voice by soliciting others to advocate as well, writing on social media about it, writing op-eds, etc.

More and more stories of black folks encountering racism are being documented and shared through social media — whether it’s at a hotel, with the police, in a coffee shop, at a school, etc. When you see such a post, call the organization, company, or institution involved to tell them how upset you are. Then share the post along with the institution’s contact information, spreading the word about what happened and encouraging others to contact the institution as well. Whether the company initiated the event or failed to protect a POC during an onslaught by a third party, they need to hear from us.

Many companies have recruiting channels that are predominantly white. Work with your HR department to recruit Americans who are descendants of enslaved Africans. Recruiting from HBCUs is a good start. Work to put descendants of enslaved Africans already hired under supportive managers.

Donate to anti-white supremacy work such as your local Black Lives Matter Chapter, the National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls, the NAACP, Southern Poverty Law Center, United Negro College Fund, Black Youth Project 100, Color of Change, The Sentencing Project, Families against Mandatory Minimums, A New Way of Life, and Dream Defenders. Join some of these list-serves and take action as their emails dictate.

Call or write to your state legislators and governor to support state-wide criminal justice reform including reducing mandatory minimum sentences, reducing sentences for non-violent drug crimes, passing “safety valve” law to allow judges to depart below a mandatory minimum sentence under certain conditions, passing alternatives to incarceration, etc. Study after study shows that racism fuels racial disparities in imprisonment, and most of the US prison population are at the state and local level.

Call or write to state legislators, federal legislators, and your governor to decriminalize weed. No, not because black folks use weed more frequently than white folks. Because black Americans are arrested for marijuana possession far more frequently than whites.
Call or write to state legislators to require racial impact statements be required for all criminal justice bills. Most states already require fiscal and environmental impact statements for certain legislation. Racial impact statements evaluate if a bill may create or exacerbate racial disparities should the bill become law. Check out the status of your state’s legislation surrounding these statements here.

NW the massive anti-racism resource for white people is brilliant, the spelled-out directions so needed. Thanks.
Am committed to begin ploughing through them. Being one and equal is every breath and not just some far off concept. What appears as separate is feared instead of loved, in a circle. Thank you for your time always. And everything you’ve so truthfully written here. Nothing can take away the pain and injustice and uncertainty of being non-white in America. The w.h. plan today hinges entirely on racism. So sorry this or imo any other response is not enough.

I just want to get my son through high and college and then set him up in his first apartment or house and then leave this world because I won’t be able to bear the fact of losing him over some bullshit. I’m to the point where now when I see or read about how black men and women lose their lives over basically nothing, it worries the fuck out of me, it drives me insane. How do I teach my son how to drive a car and then buy him a car and let him drive to the movies or to a friend’s house? We just started to let him walk by himself to the donut shop two blocks from the house. He’s already 6’2 150lbs of skin and bones with the cutest face and he’s only fourteen years old. I want to let him live his life and see the world. I want him to make mistakes and correct them like I did growing up. Even when we are out at Walmart or HEB I don’t let him out of my sight for one minute, now to some of you this might seem crazy. But to me it’s not crazy at all, it makes perfect sense. I watch the news and I’m on the internet constantly, I know my reality pretty damn well.

Don, I don’t have kids and sometimes I am thankful for that. Cuz i would be a horrible parent in that i wouldnt leave my kid out of my sight either. It would drive me insane too. Sometimes I see little kids wandering far from their parents and that worries me.
You are perfectly right to be concerned. These cops -all of them, deserve maximum punishment.

6’2 eh? At 4’11 1/2 … I am jealous 😊 Dont tell anyone but I say I am 5 feet tall when asked. LOL.

    • May 27, 2020 at 12:04 am

Don, my son is a bit older than yours. Yet no difference in what they go thru, & how we continue to protect them. Still, in every call or meeting, I tell him to be careful, be aware of his surroundings at all times. Keep those ear buds outta your ears, Son, so you’re sharply cognizant of yr surroundings, etc. Can’t help myself. I try hard to not infuse my fears into his life. A luta continua. 💞

Sending you and yours peace and comfort, Don. May guardian angels forever watch over your son as he moves through his world as a Black boy and eventually a Black man. May his path always be clear and may he always be protected from evil in any form. May you and your wife see him become the fully realized person you are loving and teaching him to become.

THANK YOU, NW, and the TOD community for your contributions to everything happening in real time and for your humanity. We are in dangerous territory every damn day. Whether it’s racism, misogyny, a virus, jobs, right to vote or who knows what else, Republicans are here every day to take away from our lives, our experience, our hard work for equality and justice. FIGHT BACK with everything you have.

Fomenting chaos, fear and dissension into our electoral process could be the end of our country and society as we know it.

It is past time for decent (relative term), high profile republican leaders to mount a clear and sustained opposition if they really care. Mitt has tried a little, but him, George W., Colin Powell, John Kasich, Condoleezza Rice, General Petreus and many others need to go much further than occasional dismay.

You’re so right, mags. None of them seem to care enough to do any more than dip a toe in the water. I just don’t understand how a General Powell in particular can sit back and say next to nothing.

Donald Trump is setting the tone by knowingly, negligently, killing thousands and thousands of Americans.
We knew how it was going to go when we let him take little babies from their mother’s arms, and jail them.
      How about now?
      STOP THE KILLING.

Mr. George Floyd could have simply been issued a ticket to show up in court.
Instead the criminal officers stood around and watched their co-worker slowly kill him, face down on the street, handcuffed behind his back. Mr. Floyd was stopped for a suspected, non-violent issue only.
Mr. Floyd was unarmed. No reason to treat him (or anyone) that way. They just wanted him to suffer. They killed him. Start giving cops like these serious jail sentences. Let’s see how their families deal with it, not just Mr. Floyd’s. How many cops think this was not OK and what are they prepared to say about it?
