    “Finally, a virus got me.’”
Scientist who fought Ebola and HIV reflects on facing death from COVID-19:
Virologist Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, fell ill with COVID-19 in mid-March. He spent a week in a hospital and has been recovering at his home in London since.
Climbing a flight of stairs still leaves him breathless….
After fighting viruses all over the world for more than 40 years, I have become an expert in infections. I’m glad I had corona and not Ebola, although I read a scientific study yesterday that concluded you have a 30% chance of dying if you end up in a British hospital with COVID-19.
That’s about the same overall mortality rate as for Ebola in 2014 in West Africa….
I have devoted my life to fighting viruses and finally, they get their revenge. For a week I balanced between heaven and Earth…”

Sen. Richard Burr stepping down as chairman of Intelligence Committee amid investigation of his stock sales before coronavirus outbreak

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a statement Thursday: “Senator Burr contacted me this morning to inform me of his decision to step aside as Chairman of the Intelligence Committee during the pendency of the investigation. We agreed that this decision would be in the best interests of the committee and will be effective at the end of the day tomorrow.”

The FBI executed a warrant and seized the cellphone of Burr (R-N.C.) late Wednesday, escalating the investigation of whether any laws were broken when he sold a significant share of his stocks before the coronavirus outbreak crashed financial markets.

I read an opinion that McConnell will replace Burr with a strong Trump supporter committee chair. The soon to be released Senate report agreeing with the earlier Russian meddling investigation of the 2016 election will show a different result or the release will be delayed for political purposes.

“Sen. John Cornyn encouraged his Texas constituents to use the Affordable Care Act after fighting to repeal it.”
Cornyn: “The good news is that if you lose your employer-provided coverage,
which covers about a 180 million Americans, that is a significant life event,
which makes you then eligible to sign up for the Affordable Care Act…
As you know, it has a sliding scale of subsidies up to 400% of poverty.
So that’s an option for people.”

    or a goal.” (Ezra Klein)
“Trump has substituted showmanship for action, playing the president on TV but refusing to do the actual job.
He has both dominated the airwaves and abdicated his duties. As a result, America’s progress against the coronavirus has stalled, even as the lockdown has driven the economy into crisis.”

I wonder if Burr is being allowed to be investigated because he didn’t have Trump’s back at all times. Others have done similar things and been left alone.

Lawrence O’Donnell so brilliantly on “stealing the grief.”
    “On Donald Trump’s renomination day,
the model now projects that we will have about 160,000 confirmed deaths from Coronavirus, and we can be guaranteed that in Donald Trump’s acceptance speech that night, that that number will be ignored or lied about.
Donald Trump has lied about deaths before. The most loathsome lie that Donald Trump told as a candidate, was that he lost ‘hundreds of friends” on 9/11. (video)
When Donald Trump said that at the South Carolina debate, I immediately tweeted that he was lying.
The next day Donald Trump changed the “hundreds of friends” to “many, many friends”….I immediately tweeted that that was also a lie. The truth is that Donald Trump lost zero friends on 9/11. Zero.
He did not attend a single 9/11 funeral. Not one.
And what he was trying to do for his political gain was to steal the grief of thousands of people who lost family members and loved ones and friends on 9/11.
Donald Trump was trying to steal their grief and make it his own and turn it into political currency.
And that same Donald Trump is now trying to steal the grief of thousands of American families who have lost a loved one to Coronavirus. The thousands upon thousands who have lost a friend to Coronavirus.
Donald Trump wants to steal their grief. And make it disappear- just throw it away.
Just pretend that that grief and those deaths do not exist.
It is impossible for Donald Trump to dishonor the American dead in this pandemic more than denying the truths of their deaths. To pretend their deaths did not happen is to pretend their lives did not happen.
It is to pretend that their lives did not end in a previously inconceivable way, in a hospital bed, alone in a room,
no family allowed, no hand holding at the bedside, on that final day, in that final moment.
And then no funeral, no memorial service of any kind where the grieving could gather,
were they could wrap their arms around each other to try to contain that grief.
Donald Trump is going to dishonor all of that.”

      “Ultimately, the rejection of mask-wearing
really goes back to the fact
that Trump, Ingraham and their most faithful followers are guided by fascist impulse, even when they don’t or can’t articulate a fully fleshed-out fascist ideology.
Above all other things, the fascist personality is one that rejects even the possibility of sickness.
To wear a mask is to publicly admit that one’s body is suspectible to illness,
which is coded as “weak” and therefore unacceptable.
The fascist narrative, Strobl explained, is that “men aren’t men anymore, but nervous, urban, overly intellectualized and (here it comes) sickly weaklings.
Weakness is never worthy of protection and has to be cast out. This is fascism…
The fascist believes that those viewed as “weak” have an obligation to die “without protest for the greater good” and that if “they don’t do it, they are weak and the weak drag everyone else down
and therefore must be done away with.”

      • May 14, 2020 at 2:41 pm

“To wear a mask, in other words, indicates a belief that your personal body can become infected.
A fascist-minded person like Trump cannot admit such a thing, either because he genuinely believes he is too strong to be affected by the virus or because he fears looking weak in public.
Just as important, wearing a mask indicates care and concern for others, especially those who are
high-risk. But the fascist-minded person doesn’t want to protect those viewed as “weak” — in fact, those people are expected to die so as not to be a burden on others. As Strobl points out, the far right believes that by becoming seriously ill or dying in service to some warped conception of the greater good,
the “weak” can prove themselves strong through their sacrifice.”

      Biden For President event.
With Governor Whitmer (MI), Governors Murphy (NJ), Governor Lamont (CT):
“…Governors, mayors and local leaders you are all stepping up across the country….
filling the vacuum of leadership…Federal government…should be fighting like hell to get to your states the PPE and the testing and the funding that you so desperately need…
This is not a moment for excuses, or deflection or blame game.
We’re in the middle of a pandemic that has cost us more than 85,000 lives.
The lives of millions of people, millions of jobs…
365 million claims since this crisis began in the last week, and almost 3,000,000 new claims in the last week. The unemployment rate is nearing 15%, highest since the Great Depression.
40% of households making $40,000 or less experienced a job loss just in March.
We’re going to have to work harder and smarter to bring ourselves out of the economic tailspin.
But I know what all of you know. That the only way out of this is by following the science, listening to the experts, taking responsible precautions that our going to help us reopen the economy as quickly as possible. As we do, there’s got to be federal support to state and local levels of our government so that we’ll be able to come out of this crisis stronger and more united.
We have an opportunity in my view to transform the economy.
To build a more resilient and inclusive middle class, and I think, that can withstand the next public crisis whatever it is, however it comes about. Not just reward the people who are well-off and well-connected.
It’s time for us to ensure that everyone gets a fair shot at success in this country…We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so let’s start with this:
We know the virus can hit anyone, but it doesn’t affect every community the same.
It is the most vulnerable, the least resourced, hit the hardest.
      And Governor Whitmer,
I know you created in Michigan a coronavirus taskforce on racial disparities, to address the disproportionate impact the virus is having on communities of color….

he merely yells “Obamagate” – in the hope that others will fill in the blanks for him. Instead, this is rapidly turning into a complete punchline. At this point #Obamagategate and #YOMAMAGATE are trending as everyone mocks Trump for his idiocy.”

    • May 15, 2020 at 10:48 am

i will say it….i do not like the VP stakes…everyone jockeying for position…Abrams seems to be doing the most…but when Biden mentioned her as a VP candidate early last year her comment was that no one auditions for 2nd place…but now here she is…that just rubs me the wrong way…but if Biden were to select her it is not a game loser for me…but i do i have my choice…

I wonder why Lawrence O’Donnell set this up in this manner…hmmmm

      • May 15, 2020 at 11:32 am

With you on this Sheila. It reeks of desperation and, to me, a blatant disregard of Biden’s absolute right to choose who he deems most likely to appeal to a very broad audience.

      • 112 jacquelineoboomer
        May 15, 2020 at 8:32 pm

Yes, I remember when she made that comment. I started to “look away” at that point. Truth be told, I’m trying to talk myself into supporting anybody who appears to be up for the selection, mostly because I can’t take the personal disappointment if I get my hopes dashed again (and it’s all about me!) (not!). I have my choice, too – just not going to cling to it! And on your final point, Lawrence said during the show that it was Joe’s idea to invite Stacey Abrams on with him. Sounded like that’s why Lawrence was waiting for an announcement, but I think it’s still too early for an announcement. Not that I’m any expert, of course! Been wrong before!
