How did your teaching go today?

Good. I narrarate my PowerPoints and add the extra stories I usually do. I give them questions to answer that are somewhat thought provoking. For example, I had them listen to James Earl Jones’ rendition of Frederick Douglass’ 4th of July speech and ask what they thought he was talking about to say the 4th of July was not for him. I had some really good, insightful answers for 8th graders, (they are learning about the abolition movement) and that pleased me. They share their work with me via email, and I grade it. Sometimes I give them videos, sometimes I don’t. We’re now approaching the 10 yrs before the Civil War, so I was able to attach a map, they printed it off, colored it and filled out the information from my directions page, and they took a picture of the finished product, and mailed that back to me. It seems to be working but I miss the back and forth, the eye contact when the light bulb goes off and I see they get something. But I don’t miss the rude behavior, the ridiculus antics they would engage in. Sorry for the long answer; you probably did need to hear all the details, but I appreciate you asking, lol. How about you? How’s your teaching going? Will you be out the rest of the year? My district says they’re waiting on Gavin Newsom, et.al. as to whether we’ll be back, but the superintendent has told principals to expect to be back in May. I don’t think so.

Hi Betsy, I actually appreciated your long answer. 🙂 It gave me a window into how one teacher/system is approaching online teaching. You say your students email you their finished work which you grade and return, I assume the same way. SO, I do have one question for you – Does your system not use Google Classroom? In my limited understanding of this venue students can upload their work to the teacher there (S/He would have created a classroom with a class code etc. etc) and the teacher can evaluate it online, make comments or whatever and the student can then see their ‘result’. Seems like that would be, maybe, a faster way to proceed? Also, there is scope for students to peer edit, or even work collaboratively as they sometimes do in ‘group’ work. My understanding is that most, if not all, of the schools in my corner have been using google classroom for quite a few years now, even before they were forced into distance learning.

I would love to use google classroom but our district, in their infinite wisdom, struck a deal with Microsoft Office, so we are not allowed to use google as it has a separate log in and parents are afraid of privacy concerns. So they work in their microsoft email accounts and share their work with me. It’s not as good as I understand google classroom is, but it is cheaper. (my district is fairly red, mostly repubs on the school board…they’re always trying to get away with giving teachers as little as possible, including pay). We have a drumpf golf course and my city has had a lot of awful experiences with him, so my city overwhelmingly voted for HRC b/c of that but they usually vote GOP.

Doom has been tweeting about ‘Light” lately, noticed that?
    Fake, demented, compromised, president:
“”Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light — and I think
(Dr. Deborah Birx) said that hasn’t been checked but you’re going to test it.
And then I said supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you’re going to test that, too. Sounds interesting.
I see disinfectant, where it knocks it out in a minute, one minute, and is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside, or almost a cleaning. Because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that. So you’re going to have to use medical doctors, but it sounds interesting to me. So, we’ll see. But the whole concept of the light, the way it kills it in one minute, that’s pretty powerful.”

      THE PODIUM T-PARTY IS OVER!
This time if there is any fallout, sickness, death from people following his insane suggestions, of ANY kind, imo someone must talk him down from the podium. His suggestions will kill and injure – correct?

Betsy, thank you for your care and creativity in teaching during these difficult days. I taught 8th grade for a year…I know that it is a difficult job. My two grandchildren in Dallas are doing their classes online. My granddaughter is taking dance class on Zoom, and my grandson is taking flute lessons that way. I am so impressed with teachers, and one reason I want Joe Biden is because Dr. Jill is a teacher and we will finally have a teacher in the White House!
My granddaughter texted me Tuesday for help with an assignment. Her teacher is doing a unit on all the cultures that make up Texas, so I answered some questions about my Texas ancestors. Info she didn’t know, and was excited to learn. We had a good time texting. Her mother said she liked the assignment…thank you, Betsy, and thanks to all the teachers continuing to teach during this difficult time.

Thanks cwaterma. I appreciate your encouragement. It’s been fun to have an email conversation with some of my students where they let me know how they’re doing. It’s a little more personal than they’d be in the classroom. I am concerned about the ones I haven’t heard from yet. We went out March 13th, and 5 of them haven’t turned in anything in all that time. I’ve sent emails, our counselors have been in touch with them, our principals have, but nothing. For sure, some kids will fall through the cracks no matter what we do. It worries me. They need our prayers or thoughts sent out to the universe.

for many of Trump’s supporters …it is about the racism and white supremacy…it does not matter how incompetent..or how corrupt he is..
    He hates who they hate…
he keeps their favorite status (white privilege) even as he takes their healthcare away…and they are alright with that…

and for others…he gives the GOP and their allies the way to stay in power…by any means necessary…even if it destroys the republic…because who needs Democracy .

Prisons are “proving to be rabid accelerators”.
Rachel Maddow explaining that the place you’re most likely to get the virus and die in America is a nursing home, where 11,000 have died so far.
#2 most likely place to get infected is a meat packing plant.
#3 most likely places to get infected = Jails, prisons, detention centers.
ACLU has ads up about the danger of the covid virus to vulnerable peoples in prisons, and has drafted a model EO that has secured executive actions on prisoner release in 15 states. Infection staff/inmate numbers are astonishing. Without taking action on behalf of millions across the country “we will never get this epidemic under control.”

    • April 24, 2020 at 1:31 pm

Rachel Maddow speaking to Anthony Romero, Executive Director, ACLU,
about “the dire number of cases we’re seeing in these facilities and these will be reservoirs of infection
      for the entire population.”
      Romero:
“And volcanoes for the pandemic. And we have to think about the science.
You can’t just wall them off and pretend that..let the folks die behind bars. It is first inhumane, it’s cruel, it would be unlawful, but it is also not practical. The facts are 420,000 people work in our prisons and jails. They’re our neighbors, they are people in our churches, and our synagogues and our mosques. Coming in and out of the facilities. And so the same concern we’ve had for the nurses and doctors who are in the hospitals without ppe are the same concerns we now have for the prison guards and the workers in the prisons and jails. And they will become the vectors.”

    • April 24, 2020 at 1:33 pm

      Romero:
“My next door neighbor may very well come back and infect his entire family because he works in Rikers. And so the concern isn’t just about the incarcerates, but the entire community.
We estimate from an epidemiological study that we released just yesterday, estimates that we could be underestimating the fatalities by 100,000 deaths. That’s not an astronomical number. That’s not just people dying behind bars, these are people in our communities dying because the jails are the vectors for the pandemic.”

    • April 24, 2020 at 1:34 pm

      Romero:
“740,000 people in jail any given day. One person goes in jail every 3 seconds. 70% of them are not even guilty, they are pre-adjudication, they are pre-trial detainees. The average time that you’re in jail, 25 days. They are revolving doors. So when people go into jails, they’re incarcerated, they are held there, there’s no hand washing, there’s no sanitizing, there’s no cleaning of the surfaces, there’s no social distancing.
They come back out, and they infect their families, and their communities and their loved ones.
We’re all going to pay the price unless we really pay much closer attention to it.”

    • April 24, 2020 at 1:35 pm

      Maddow:
“How receptive are public officials to these arguments that the ACLU is making?
I think the public is very receptive… but are you pushing on an open door in terms of governors and sheriffs who are looking for a way to try to help?”
      Romero:
“And some have done very well. None of them have done what they need to do. So far we’ve released maybe 1% of the entire incarcerated population in the U.S. Italy by comparison, has released 10%
of its prison population because of the COVID crisis. So we have secured maybe 17,000 who have
      been released.”

    • April 24, 2020 at 1:40 pm

      Romero:
(Explained for example the Colorado governor has released 40%. Meanwhile the Kentucky governor is dragging his feet…which will be to the detriment of his residents.)
“We have to hold them accountable because our health is on the line for what they don’t do
with regard to prisons and jails.”

    • April 24, 2020 at 1:42 pm

      imo,
have to think the same dire story of infections and deaths apply to the children jails on the border.

Sometimes I found those guys a little too “white privilege” for me; they sound like Chris Hayes: all male, very smug at times, except for Vietor. It turned me off and I slowly began to forget to listen to their podcasts but when they dismissed Kamala Harris’ comments about suspending drumpf from twitter, I was done with them and don’t listen to them anymore. Sarcastic, Joking, don’t remember, didn’t say it, out of context, fake news, hoax, China, Iran, or Russia did it, Obama’s fault, Biden made him do it, someone else’s fault and whatever other excuse he can think of at the moment or that his coconspirators can think of to walk back his craziness. A teacher hears those excuses from their students all the time, but from the President of the US acting like a five year old is ridiculous. At first I did not want him to talk everyday, but now I like the repetitive showing of insanity on view before the election. If this does not kill his chances for victory nothing will do it.
