Good Morning TOD family and thank you Nerdy for keeping this wonderful place open for all of us. Before I start teaching on line today, let me just say thanks to everyone for the articles, the twitter posts, your own thoughts about the difficult time we’re in that you’ve all posted. I count on this place for keeping me informed and I have learned so much from all of you. Have a wonderful day. ❤

Here’s Senator Warren’s tweet in case anyone wants to extend condolences to her and her family.

      Very sad.

      • April 23, 2020 at 12:24 pm

Dear Senator Warren, your brother’s death ,was beyond the call of duty. The faux president must answer and pay for his irresponsible, self-interested, gross delay/denial of this pandemic. May it be so and soon.
–With love and enormous thanks for all of your family’s long service to the people of America.

Part of the hell of Covid-19 is that family can’t be with their hospitalized loved ones as they pass from this lethal disease. What Sen. Warren’s family just experienced is replicated all over this country, particularly in communities of color where the virus hits harder. We plan to keep staying home until it’s clear we are well past the plateau.

Good morning, TODville! Nerdy, as always, thank you for this safe harbor!

This company is just a few miles away. A bunch of civilians, voluntarily staying away from family 24/7, for 28 days, for the public good. Yet, there are ignorant yahoos protesting at numerous state capitols, endangering all of our health…

Rachel Maddow has been the conscience of the nation for a couple of weeks now:
Researching, raising the alarm, as well as tracking local newspaper reports and obituaries to get information about America’s vast nursing home death toll.
April 16th: “NBC news count as of tonight…5760 Americans have died in nursing homes. But that’s only based on data from 29 out of the 50 states!…it appears that…residents in nursing homes…2.3% appear to have already been killed…how high do you think that numbers going to go? How high do you think that number is going to go in your state? How good a job is your state doing on this?” (Maddow)

    • April 23, 2020 at 1:29 pm

“Coronavirus-linked fatalities at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in the US have
surpassed 10,000 — with the highest tally in New York, according to a troubling new report.
A survey by the Wall Street Journal published Wednesday found at least 10,700 fatalities among 35 states that either submit data online or responded to information requests. Some states, including Ohio and Washington, have not reported data in such COVID-19 deaths, while others, like Massachusetts and West Virginia, are working to ramp up testing for residents and staffers at long-term facilities, the newspaper reports. The virus has infected residents and employees in at least 4,800 facilities, leading to more than 56,000 infections nationwide.”
—-WaPo now reporting that nursing homes account for half the deaths in Europe.

    • April 23, 2020 at 1:32 pm

      Maddow to Rep. Jan Schakowsy:
“You’ve really led the charge on this in the House. This letter you sent to the Trump Administration demanding that they immediately collect and publicly report facility level data on nursing homes. They do now say that they want to collect that information…are they collecting the right information…do you have faith they are going to carry this out the way it needs to be done?”
      SCHAKOWSKY:
“You know I definitely have concerns. Number one they aren’t going to be reporting fatalities, only the cases, and we need to know about the fatalities. (She talks about her district and the deaths in nursing homes.) We need to know this information. Beyond that, they are doing it by rule-making Rachel, which takes a long time. They could just order it right now, but that is not happening. So I don’t know even when even that data collection is going to come about. So there are a number of problems – and I believe that it is in response to 78 of us. I led a letter to HHS and to CMS saying, you need to tell us, not just the families, not just the residents, but also the public, what is going on in nursing homes.’ You know Rachel we don’t know the scope of this problem and we need to have a picture of it.
      MADDOW:
“the relief bill…I think there is $25 billion for testing, do you know if any of that will be for testing nursing homes?
      SCHAKOWSKY:
“None of it has been officially designated for nursing homes. It is supposed to be for the high risk areas and I certainly hope that will happen. And I want to communicate with the powers that be, that that be one of the areas. With 1.3 million nursing homes in this country there are chronic problems, but right now we really need to focus on those nursing homes and make sure that we’re testing. As Nancy Pelosi said from the beginning, testing, testing, testing. And so I am certainly going to encourage my colleagues to say nursing homes need to be at the top of the list.
      MADDOW:
“Congresswoman, we’re going to stay on the nursing home issue as long as it continues to be the biggest problem here. Because you have taken the lead on this issue on the House, I’d as you please just keep us apprsed….the hole in the federal response is just incredibly fatal and I’d love to stay in touch with you in an ongoing basis.”

    • April 23, 2020 at 1:34 pm

Deaths in nursing homes are now (at least) 20% of all Covid deaths in our country. (WaPo)
Congresswoman Schakowsy reports the Trump administration (say) they want to collect data on cases.
But will not report on the death numbers.
      No surprise.
–Not hard to figure out…there are many, many more deaths in nursing homes under the radar.

“Jane Goodall: The Hope” premiered yesterday on National Geographic.
“Climate change is happening. . . if we lose hope, then we might as well all give up. . .
if we think there’s no way forward as many scientists tell us, then eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we are going to die, but we musn’t let it happen,” Goodall says in the film. “True to her platform, the documentary (is not about her) but about her view of the future. If I may draw an analogy, I believe Goodall is the Ruth Bader Ginsburg of conservation work. Not only because she is so dedicated to her work and her mission —even later in life — but also because she is a symbol of hope for many.”

JG: “My job is to inspire people and get them to take action; the message is, we are part of the natural world,
and as we destroy the natural world we destroy our own future, not only wildlife.”
“How can you expect anybody to change if you don’t talk to them?”

    • April 23, 2020 at 2:54 pm

JG: “I think probably millions of people, especially those living in cities,
have experienced for the first time what it’s like to breathe fresh air and to see the stars at night,
even to see wild animals at closer quarters; I think those people, and I think other people too,
have seen this as a wakeup call that we’ve disrespected nature and we’ve got to start changing the way that we act and we’ve got to rethink the way we live.”

    • April 23, 2020 at 2:56 pm

“We’ve got to get away from this consumerism, materialism that puts economic development
ahead of environmental protection, which Is damaging the future generations of humans and animals.”
–Such a brave, brilliant and loving woman.
–Honored to have a photocopy (somebody pinched the original photo) of my daughter, then 8 years old,
      with Jane Goodall…unforgettable.

And every evening; 4pm PST/7pm EDT she reads aloud from a book she’s chosen. Before she begins reading the book, she will read a poem (National Poetry Month) and last night she read a poem by our Liberal Liberian aka LL. 🙂

    March 31st:
“half of American families are already sacrificing basic necessities in order to make their rent or mortgage payments. A temporary government reprieve from rent and mortgage payments (sometimes called a holiday or a jubilee) would certainly ease the weight of the pandemic on these households. Calls for a rent holiday follow another proposal to wipe the slates clean in order to keep people from falling into poverty as a result of the pandemic.”
“Millions have lost income and are already facing tradeoffs about whether to pay for rent, utilities, or purchase necessities like food and diapers.”
–Now we’re coming up to another rent deadline.
–Can a rent holiday be declared?

I just found out that they are offering free covid testing at my son’s high school every Wednesday. As a matter of fact my wife tells me that our mayor is encouraging citizens come out and get tested. He said so far only a small amount of people have come to get tested, and that he’s afraid of losing funding for the testing site if people don’t show up. So next Wednesday if everything is ok I’ll go and get tested. My only concern is that I’m debating if I should get tested even though I’m not showing any signs or symptoms.
