So I guess I’m not a plumber after all

On her way out the door to go to work my wife asked me to fix the flapper on the toilet in the master bedroom. Since I like to go above and beyond I thought I’d go to Walmart and buy a new flapper and install it. Next thing I know I broke the flapper and had to return to Walmart to buy a whole new assembly. Well the new assembly called for me to remove the toilet, my night was done. I texted her at work about one am in the morning and told her what had happened. She called me back, as the phone rang I just know I was done for. But to my surprised she wasn’t mad or upset, she said no problem we’ll call our handy man in the morning to come and fix it. I slept going knowing that I wasn’t in the dog house.

I mean I haven’t sat down and spent time analyzing what the Lt. Governor of Texas said. But at first glance I’m sure their isn’t anything more important than living, mind you this is just a quick assessment.

A touching moment during VP Biden’s talk with James Corden tonight. For a “show-and-tell” segment he held up some lovely family photos. He teared up near the end when he held up a large framed photo of Beau and Hunter when they were in college. I wanted to reach through the TV and hug him. Such a sweet man. 😢

Joe was so straightforward on the VP and every issue. Two empathic guys and an honest exchange, what a lovely concept! thank you Joe Biden.

Science not ideology: “When you follow science good things happen.”
Governor Inslee: “I think you’re perfect for the moment.”
He is confident that Joe will follow the science, be honest, and follow a plan. “I can’t wait to have an optimist in the White House – someone who really believes in the American vision of growing your economy by getting out ahead and leading the world in technology, and I think you will be that leader….your track record (such as shepherding the $800B ARRA that created 3.3 million jobs in clean energy) has shown you can really do this.”
VP Biden said that taking bold climate action is an enormous opportunity to create jobs…
“The blinds have been taken off…this is a moment we move beyond where we were.”

    “The convergence:
Third-world debt and the climate crisis are intimately connected”
“As it turns out there’s a connection between the world’s rapidly escalating levels of debt, surging wealth inequality, climate change and the increasing squeeze put on the earth’s people and the planet’s natural resources by an oversized financial sector that’s devouring everything in sight by trying to monetize it.”

    Last March:
The “Navy quietly ends climate change task force, reversing Obama initiative”
“When he took office as secretary of defense, retired Marine Gen. Jim Mattis
urged the armed forces to battle the effects of global climate change.
“Climate change is impacting stability in areas of the world where our troops are operating today,”
Mattis indicated in written testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee in 2017. It is appropriate for the Combatant Commands to incorporate drivers of instability that impact the security environment in their areas into their planning.” But the Navy quietly shut down its specialized U.S. Navy Task Force Climate Change in March,
reversing an Obama-era initiative designed to prepare naval leadership for global shifts in sea levels, melting ice sheets and ocean temperatures.Navy officials told E&E News, which initially reported the termination of the program, that the task force’s mission was one that was “no longer needed.”
—GOP deniers fail to mention that the U.S. military has been preparing for climate change fallout around the world for quite some time.

“British engineers have created a seed-planting drone which could help restore the world’s forests.
Biocarbon Engineering, a start-up based in Oxford, designed the drones to fire seed missiles across fields, planting hundreds of potential trees in a matter of minutes.
In September 2018, the drones were deployed in a field just south of Yangon, Myanmar.
The seeds they sowed have since grown into tiny mangrove saplings, about 20-inches tall.
Irnia Fedorenko, co-founder of Biocarbon Engineering, told Fast Company: “We now have a case confirmed of what species we can plant and in what conditions.
“We are now ready to scale up our planting and replicate this success.”

    • April 22, 2020 at 1:06 pm

“Around half of the world’s mangrove forests have been lost.
The trees, which grow along coastlines, can store more carbon than trees on land.
Mangrove deforestation is responsible for 24 million tons of CO2 emissions each year,
      according to a 2018 study.
Biocarbon Engineering is collaborating on the project with Myanmar non-profit the Worldview International Foundation, which has been planting trees by hand across the country since 2012.
The Foundation works with local villagers, who have helped plant more than six million trees in the past seven years. But human-only methods are time-consuming, and the non-profit has turned to the Oxford engineers for help.”

    • April 22, 2020 at 1:07 pm

“Obviously, planting a billion trees will take a long time without the help of drones,”
Bremley Lyngdoh, a partner on the project, told Fast Company.
Roughly 350,000 hectares of coastal forest need to be restored, which translates to more than a billion trees. Ten drones, operated by two operators, can plant 400,000 trees a day.”

    • April 22, 2020 at 1:07 pm

“The drones work by flying across a specified area, collecting data about soil conditions and determining the prime locations for planting. They then fire biodegradable pods, filled with a germinated seed and nutrients, into the ground. Organisers say the project benefits both the environment and local communities, by helping provide new economic opportunities.“It’s all about creating livelihoods,” said Mr Lyngdoh.
“We have to create jobs that are long-term that can sustain the family, then they see the benefit of the project, and they get engaged in the long term.”

    Nurse Erica Jones,
protesting at the WH yesterday over the shortage of ppe after 50 nurses have died:
“We are here because our colleagues are dying. Our healthcare workers, our nurses, our doctors, people are dying. I think that right now people think of us as heroes, but we’re feel like martyrs.
We/re feeling like we’re being left on the battlefield…in Covid units everyone is hungry, everyone is thirsty and afraid to drink because if we take our masks off, we’re being exposed.”
    And that being horrendously true:
“It remains the case…that fighting and combating and beating the virus, containing it, surveilling it, needs to be our primary concern. It is such a simple elemental truth, it somehow needs however to be drummed into the heads of powerful people who seem intent on missing it.” (Hayes)

    • April 22, 2020 at 2:21 pm

      For example:
FL and GA governors seem determined to spread the virus to as many of their residents as possible.
By contrast, Senator Doug Jones (AL) spoke to Hayes about Governor Ivey’s commitment to following the advice of healthcare professionals. Senator Jones:
“But I think people from Alabama, they are going to have to start asking if we’ve traveled to Georgia or Florida lately because what they are doing in those two states I think is just crazy.”
= Just like guns, COVID-19 crosses state lines…for crying out loud.

  66. April 22, 2020 at 3:02 pm

Sen. Doug Jones (AL) was asked by Hayes, was he confident McConnell and Republicans
would help states and localities out with their operating budgets next year?
We know GOP is not a fan of more debt and deficit unless it is about handing out more cash to the wealthy.
Jones said Democrats in Congress have been pushing hard from the beginning to help out Mayors, working hard on the front lines to provide central services and doing it without the revenue they need.
“I’m afraid they (GOP) are going to hang it over the cities and the mayors in some twisted way to make them open up the economy back up. That would be unfortunate.”
