More good progress here to safeguard our most precious people on the front lines.

⁣We owe a profound debt of gratitude to all the people working on the frontlines. From our medical professionals to our grocery store clerks, we’ve seen people step up and make endless sacrifices to help us get through this pandemic. Today, I’ll be sharing the story of one of those leaders on the frontlines and my friend, @chefjoseandres. ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ Throughout this pandemic, his organization the @wckitchen has stepped up to support over 20 cities across the country. Here’s what motivates Jose and how we all can play a role in supporting our communities: ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ “We are living a moment that will define generations. We will look back on these days as the world changes into something new, and we will ask ourselves…what did we do to help? To help the marginalized and vulnerable, to help the heroes working on the front lines, to help the huddled masses among us? ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ From Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico to the wildfires in California, to tornadoes and floods across the country to a humanitarian crisis on our southern border, World Central Kitchen’s journey to serving over 15 million meals has taught us one essential lesson: instead of being paralyzed by the magnitude of a problem, we can choose to be part of the solution by coming together to just start cooking.” ⠀⁣ ⠀⁣ “There are so, so many ways you can help. Buy a meal for the medical professionals and first responders working day and night to keep us healthy and safe. Check in on elderly neighbors to make sure they aren’t forgotten. Wash your hands. Stay home if you can and listen to the experts, always. Being kind and caring for one another. Make sure to leave enough for the next person. Your empathy will reach beyond six feet!”

    Favors to loyalists.
Denver Post: “President Donald Trump is treating life-saving medical equipment as emoluments he can dole out as favors to loyalists. It’s the worst imaginable form of corruption — playing political games with lives. For the good of this nation during what should be a time of unity, he must stop…. The federal government should be procuring medicine, masks, and ventilators and distributing them to states on a set formula based on population, rate of infection and need.” (c/o Benen)

“A new attack ad by President Trump’s re-election campaign
portraying former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. as soft on China includes an image of an Asian-American former governor of Washington State that appears to falsely suggest he is Chinese.
The image, which appears briefly, was pulled from a 2013 event in Beijing, where Mr. Biden, now the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, shared a stage with Gary Locke, the former governor of Washington, who also served as President Barack Obama’s commerce secretary and ambassador to China.”

Meet Frances Perkins: the first female member of a presidential cabinet, and the chief architect behind many New Deal programs that live on 85 years later.
A trained social worker, master negotiator and advocate of workers’ rights, she witnessed hardships faced by workers both before and during the Great Depression — and as Secretary of Labor, she crafted policies hoping to alleviate societal ills like unemployment and poverty.

      April 10, 2020 at 6:07 pm

Thanks for posting this. I am Native American and White mixed as are many. I am 1/16th Native American and the rest European White mostly Irish, German and French. I am the end of the line to be able to be on the roll and qualify to live on the tribal reservation. Our tribe was dis-enrolled from the time I was seven years old till I was thirty-eight years old. I moved here in 2004. I am currently learning about my tribe. I served on the Tribal Education Committee for six years after retiring from teaching for twenty-two years. I do hear negative comments from the general public about Indians since my appearance does not suggest I am so myself. I try to correct misconceptions in these instances. It is not unlike trying to correct Trump supporters that totally believe his lies. If I had one overall wish it would be for people to be open minded and try to understand others without having to make others into an evil enemy.

First time in my life when I would even consider the use of “Uncle Tom” or referencing anyone who used the term.

It’s only fitting that Trump would be the catalyst for a ‘first’ ….

    • 73 Don
      April 10, 2020 at 9:15 pm

I wish I had a comeback but I don’t, but I’ll just say this. The type of black men that Trump surrounds himself with all have a self-hate, they don’t really feel good about themselves. They seek recognition and validation from the very people or persons that have utter contempt for them. The Ben Carson and Jerome Adams of the world aren’t fooling anyone in the African American community. Yeah, anyways, that’s about all I have to say about these two.

      • April 10, 2020 at 9:22 pm

Am as ‘white’ as they make’um, Don, as you know – more than one distant relative was a slave owner.

I have never entered the “Uncle Tom” dialogue, though I was alive and hearing it when the term was circulating in the African American community in the 60s.

But, I was compelled to RT Blaine Hardaway’s tweet because from my perspective he ‘nailed it,’ as you have done for Carson and Adams.

It saddens me that any person doubts their self-worth.

It especially saddens me when the oppressed are so thoroughly abused that they think it’s their fault and not TOTALLY the fault of the oppressor.

        Peace.
