Congrats, Gail! The helpers are so brave. But they need medical grade PPE and other equipment. The supply chain must be federalized to streamline it and get the needs met without a bidding war.

My wife and I had a good long talk today. My wife is an RN, she works on the critical care unit at the hospital that she works at. In the news lately there have been stories about Doctors and Nurses being disciplined for speaking out about PPE shortages at their respective hospitals. I told my wife that if anyone from the administrative staff ask you to do something that will put your health and even life in danger you tell them to fuck off. She already puts her life in danger by working on the convid unit, but that’s what she signed up for and she knows that. Its just the unnecessary bs that they have to go through. The riches and supposedly most advanced country in the history of the world and we can’t even protect your warriors on the front lines of this pandemic, shameful.

      March 31, 2020 at 10:12 pm

Over 800 of our fellow citizens died today because of convid, and before the week is out we will be averaging over a thousand deaths a day.

I hope your wife is able to stay safe and healthy through this crisis. It’s a shame what our health providers are going through during this crisis. We can do better than this.

        March 31, 2020 at 10:30 pm

I was almost to the point of telling her if she wants to take some time off to just go ahead and do it. But like all warriors she wants to stay in the fight. Both of us have to triage in the parking lot at our places of employment just to go in and start working, wild times we are living in.

    • April 1, 2020 at 3:33 am

I honestly cannot fathom the stress involved in all this, the worry for you and the reality of what she faces. I honor her and all who serve in this capacity every day, taking smears from the worst person in the world, being asked to do the impossible without the proper protection. It’s insane. I wish we could all protect her. And you. I can only hope things start to improve someday soon because this is some crazy BS. Please take good care.

    “Scientists, analysts, policy experts…
on how the lifestyle changes brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic
    could affect global CO2 emissions
in the short and long term”:
Christiana Figueres: “The Covid-19 pandemic has unleashed humanity’s instinct to transform itself in the face of a universal threat and it can help us do the same to create a livable planet for future generations.”
Dr Glen Peters: “Covid-19 may just demonstrate that solving the climate problem is going to have to focus on solving the technological challenge.”
Mohamed Adow: “What’s important…is using this opportunity to create better systems and structures that can respond to the climate crisis.”
Dr Katharine Hayhoe: “Long-term, stimulus packages may hold the key to whether this disaster significantly delays or advances progress on climate.”
Dr Carl-Friedrich Schleussner: “Even the most stringent responses to the climate crisis would be much less abrupt than what we are seeing now.”
Prof Mike Berners-Lee: “Covid-19 is a re-evaluation and re-wiring opportunity. It won’t be much fun but it does give humanity an enforced chance to stop and think.”
Dr Helena Wright: “Given the links between zoonotic diseases and habitat loss, we could see renewed impetus to stop biodiversity loss.”
Prof Dave Reay: “The climate benefits of a modal shift to online for things like conferences can be big.”
Dr Joeri Rogelj: “These trillion-dollar measures show once again that if political will is present and society acknowledges the acute need to act, drastic measures can be implemented in a short period of time.”
Prof Tadj Oreszczyn: “We may look enviously at the co-ordination across government to tackle Covid-19 and the central role of science…But until this plays out and we find what has and has not worked this may be premature.”
Leo Murray: “Intervening strategically at these moments can help steer people into a lower carbon consumption pattern more seamlessly than trying to prise them out of their existing habits and bring about more lasting reductions in lifestyle emissions.”
Prof Mark Maslin: “Covid-19 has changed our view of governments and their role in society. By embracing this we can now ensure that win-win solutions are adopted to deal with the climate change emergency.”
Dr Leah C Stokes: “We may find that this crisis changes our societies in a few ways that lock-in lower carbon emissions. People may start working from home more often and skip work trips.

“Not since the American Revolution, when England’s King George III punished us for
acting in our own self-interest, has our “national leader” been so out of touch with our real circumstances.
This has given rise to what I call the Free Republic of Reality,
led by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy,
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf.
These four Democratic governors formed a compact of mutual aid and support as a coordinated public health response to a rising death toll they could not ignore.
Our free republic did what a nation must do in a time of existential crisis,
combined forces under the basic principle that all lives matter and that all commercial interests
must be subordinate to the preservation of life.”

Epidemiologist Mark Lipsitch talking to Chris Hayes last night…
Notes: They were saying the data shows social distancing is working and we are moving in the right direction, with Coronavirus cases slowing. This gives us breathing space to build capacity. However if we END social distancing there will be a resurgence of the virus. The idea is to buy time until we have more ways to deal with the virus, cures, and find out “what’s better and what’s worse.” We must continue with large scale mitigation and physical distancing. Until there is a high level of immunity out there, it will not be the end.
