The people don’t want a revolution, and in some instances they don’t even want wide ranging structural changes. But what they do want is a competent and functioning government. I think Biden wants to do exactly that, minus the histrionics.

Every day frontpage news from now to the election?
” During an exchange with Martha MacCallum, Trump promised that he would cut vital programs like Medicare and Social Security, a moment that could come back to haunt him in the general election.
“If you don’t cut something in entitlements, you’ll never really deal with the debt,” the Fox News host said, referring to programs like Social Security and Medicare.
Trump responded with a promise: “We’ll be cutting.”

Federal Judge says AG Barr can’t be trusted, orders DOJ to turn over UNREDACTED Mueller report.
“This is a remarkable opinion and a stunning rebuke of the Attorney General of the United States from a federal district judge who is neither a firebrand nor one who’s prone to hyperbole,” tweeted Steve Vladeck, Professor in Law at the University of Texas School of Law.”

“The reported breach of confidentiality as it relates to traumatized children is particularly egregious.”
“Federal agencies must treat children in their care with humanity and in accordance with the law,”

“Unfortunately, as your offices have repeatedly documented, agency decisions and practices have failed migrant children, including children ripped apart from their parents at the border due to the cruel family separation policy and children who have languished in dangerous, overcrowded facilities at the southwest border.”
–Meanwhile this Administration is busy destroying the records of abducted immigrant children and adults who have died or been sexually abused while in Trump border jails.

    Excerpt from “Touch. Touch Touching.”
“Conversion factors are listed neatly on the inside flaps of Peechee’s.
They have a system for saying one thing is now another. They claim they made the world be- cause they redefined it. The Mormons kept their records. The American Psychiatric Association kept theirs. They were reported and relocated, names, lands, and bodies, from the Department of War to the Department of the Interior.* Christian Sci- ence government. They act like biological diversification and natural preservation are equally applied to people and to landscapes. They subtract one from the other and delegate their care and classification to different bodies and different structures. Architecture, water rights and subsurface drilling. They claim they are attempting to relieve the pressure, too many demands from gods and plants they are afraid of. Wild woods.
    Wild earth. Wild women.”

“Reid Gómez is an urban-raised Navajo from the Rock formerly known as Potrero Hill. Her love for San Francisco, the land and its Black and Indian inhabitants, informs every word she places, like poetry within the madness. From the chaos that is alcohol and garbage, she examines the ways we are more beautiful than broken. Audacious and esoteric, she descends twelve feet deep inside women’s bodies and the connections that exist between ancestors and landscapes.”

    • March 6, 2020 at 12:31 pm

Reid Gómez: “I live in language. My Grandfather would come in from the yard and tell us,

      Good Afternoon TODVille.

I remember like if it was yesterday when PBO complained about two things: 1) the need to NOT vilify your opponent so much so that at the end, when s/he becomes president, members of your party will not believe him/her. Of course, that was during the McCain/Palin era, when the ignorant Governor from Alaska unleashed doubt about PBO’s origins and religion; 2) the need for politicians to tell the truth even when it is hard, because when you get caught lying, people will not believe you even when you tell the truth.

Orange Man has built his campaign and presidential success in telling lies and projecting his flaws on others. It is only natural that his followers, whose sanity I question anyway, do not believe in anything but the rants coming from his mouth. He vilifies the press, the media, Democrats and whoever finds himself in his way as he lies. His followers, which include members of his administration, do the same. Take Sarah Sanders for instance, or any of his press secretaries. Sometimes they lie as the President stands a few blocks away and answers with the truth. This is the hallmark of this administration. Unfortunately, we are all at risk because of it.

First COVID 19 was a mild thing, just 15 people who will get cured in the next few days. No need to change anything or do something about. A week later, 15 people have died, hundreds are quarantined, thousands have been exposed, and the million of test kits promised are no where to be delivered.

      God help us all.

    Mixed news:

The U.S. economy showed strength in February, adding 273,000 jobs, despite the spreading coronavirus outbreak

The jobless rate fell to 3.5 percent. Business leaders and politicians are watching the jobless rate closely, especially as the spreading coronavirus cuts into manufacturing supply chains as well as the travel industry.

Dow dives more than 700 points as coronavirus fears dominate roller-coaster week

Investors continue their retreat, sending the three major U.S. indexes sliding more than 3 percent, as the deadly outbreak spreads worldwide. Also driving the sell-off is a big drop in the 10-year Treasury yield, a key global financial measure and reliable indicator of future economic health.

We are about to be subjected to a massive disinformation campaign against Joe Biden, and this one will be particularly pernicious. But for those of us who are fact-based, it is important to keep in mind that there is no data to support the allegations that are being made.

But the Bernie-Joe situation is not tyranny.
Civility here relates to civil conversation between the Bernie people and the Joe people,.
We are ALL in this to win it and not be bamboozled by Trump-Russia party shock doctrine and chaos.
–We the Democratic Party can choose to unify and be 100% civil starting now

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee aboard Marine One helicopter with President Obama as they viewed damage from a mudslide in Oso, Washington, in 2014 (also pictured are Sen. Patty Murray and National Security Advisor Susan Rice).⁣ ⁣ A nursing home in the state of Washington has become the epicenter of the coronavirus in the United States. Yesterday, Gov. Inslee said at a news briefing that the state will cover the costs of testing for Washington residents who don’t have health insurance.⁣ “For the uninsured in our state, whose doctors believe they need testing, I am announcing that we have the authority and intention to cover those costs by the state of Washington,” Inslee said.⁣ ⁣ Today, while at the CDC, IMpotus called Gov. Inslee a “snake”. This was not a misquote; he said it in front of cameras. ⁣ ⁣ "I told Mike (Pence) not to be complimentary of that governor because that governor is a snake," Trump told reporters while donning a 'Keep America Great' hat at the CDC in Atlanta. "We have a lot of problems with the governor.” ⁣ ⁣ Jay Inslee is an honorable man. He is a patriot. He ran for President and elevated climate change as a key issue in a way that other candidates didn’t. Now, he is making the best decisions he can given the coronavirus epidemic in his state. ⁣ ⁣ One has to question the mental capacity for any President of the United States that publicly calls any Governor a “snake”. This is not a political game we are facing. It is a national health crisis.

    Good Morning TOD Family!!!

I’ve found myself taking intermittent breaks over the last few months from politics… I even went through a few weeks of no MSNBC. At the same time, I’ve wanted to stay abreast of what’s going on. There are a few twitter accounts I go to for updates. But the Obama Diary is where I can ALWAYS come and not feel the angst and yo-yo-ing that I often feel listening to the media pundits. So thanks to Nerdy for maintaining this site and giving us this haven that allows us to stay up-to-date on the happenings without causing anxiety and a rise in blood pressure. And thanks to the regular contributors who, not only provide updates and commentary on what’s going on in our political climate, but also expand our knowledge and awareness in the arts and sciences, and often provide some mental relief through good news events and some comic relief…not to mention our Obama walks down memory lane.

One other thing I note is that there are times that there is a disagreement of opinions. But it is done in an amenable way…no attacks…no name-calling…such a welcome respite from what we currently see these days. Thanks TOD community for that!!!

My two cents on the primaries… I agree that one of the priorities – the main priority – is to get the orange one out of the WH. Secondary is to repair the damage that’s been done to this democracy over the last 3 years. I think we must get back to a place of normalcy and consistency before we can make any real progress towards *anyone’s* agenda. The first pf the priorities can’t be accomplished without solidarity within the Democratic Party. But that alone won’t accomplish the job. We also need the votes of Independents and the Never-tRumper Republicans/Non-tRumpist Republicans. But these people will not vote for a candidate they see as being too radical and unyielding in their progressive agenda…Heck, there are some Democrats who will struggle with that. The Democratic candidate must have a message of unity, within the party and within the country. This message should be reflected not just in the words and actions of the candidate but also in the words and actions of spokespersons and supporters. And the Democratic candidate must not be selfish and self-serving. They have to also consider the down-ballot candidates. Better yet, they must recognize the NEED for success of the down-ballot candidates. A Republican majority in the House and/or the Senate, even with a WH win, would result in a continuation of the quagmire we are currently in.

“the rest of the world exists whether Trump likes it or not.”
    5 challenges:
“Trump faces as he attempts to navigate the global politics of the outbreak.”
#1 is “borders, internal and external.” Trump loves to claim that his Democratic critics favor “open borders,” which is fear-mongering nonsense. Heath and Okun explain, “Attempting to harden borders isn’t a long-term solution to a crisis that requires cross-border cooperation. Epidemiologists and other experts say such limits might help slow the spread of disease by a few days or weeks — at best.”

    • March 7, 2020 at 11:56 am

#2 is “international institutions.” Heath and Okun point out that Trump has “questioned the mission of global organizations like the United Nations and the NATO military alliance” and has “limited extra U.S. investment globally to $37 million for the World Health Organization.” Problem: the U.S. needs the input of its allies in other countries when it comes to fighting coronavirus. The U.S. and its allies in Europe, Asia and Latin America have a mutual enemy in coronavirus. (more…)
#3 is “business bailouts.” From an economic and business standpoint, the U.S. and many other countries have a mutual interest in combating coronavirus. Coronavirus is terrible for business whether it is killing people in Washington State or Milan, Italy.
Heath and Okun note, “The coronavirus is ripping through the global economy. ”

    • March 7, 2020 at 11:57 am

      #4 is “military cooperation.”
“the U.S. military, as a global institution, is also grappling with the coronavirus.” (more…)
      #5 is “refugees.”
“refugees have limited access to hygiene and health care systems.” (more…)

    • March 7, 2020 at 11:57 am
