I have had the chance to visit Cuba a couple of times and I saw it too. The plum hotel jobs where there was opportunity to earn tips, were held by more lighter skinned folks of Spanish (???) descent compared to darker skinned folks. I was there in mid-1990s with a couple friends who are of Chinese heritage and when the 3 of us were about to enter a dance club in the neighboring hotel, I was stopped by the hotel security, thinking I was local … until they realized I wasn’t.
