My daughter, now a single mom, is in that situation. She has to pay for after school care. She does get a discount because it is an after school program by her Y. She was able to get reduced dues at her Y and that also gets passed on for what she pays for day care after school. She still pays $40 a week! Yes, it is an excellent program. Still that’s a lot for her to pay!

        • 20 Dudette
          November 6, 2019 at 10:50 pm

Your daughter is fortunate to have access to a rare program like this. So many people struggle to find affordable, safe before and after school help for their kids. I hope Senator Harris’ idea gets traction and becomes law soon. Imagine how what how life-changing this would be for millions of parents and children.

For sure. Of all the plans out there about all the various issues, this one is so so important to millions of families. It would be life-changing for those families. Speaking of Kamala, every time I see anything about her, I get newly pissed off about how the media is treating her or more bluntly, ignoring her! 😦 😦

I totally agree with my POTUS44. This is why some young faces inside Congress make me cringe. Some even have the audacity to hold a picket line before the Speaker of the House’s office. My world! Their motto is either “my way at 95 mph or the highway”. Incremental progress in an economic system so complex like ours touches them like a lighting rod.

On previous post (sorry, can’t remember who posted) there was a link to a Newsweek article about a forum in Lisbon where Katyal was on the panel. In that article it was stated that Snowden was present. My first thought: Wot, he’s able to travel out of Russia? Then: are there extradition rights between Portugal & US? And why is he at this conference to begin with?

  16. November 6, 2019 at 9:58 pm

      A snip of it…….

      • November 7, 2019 at 11:03 am

        Wow….

        the damage might be irreparable….

some things that are lost might remain lost….it took a President like Obama to repair the rift with our allies…there is NO Obama among the candidates…i don’t know meta…

i also wonder about being able to fix the corruption…the broken norms and the rule of law that Trump and the GOP has wrought…i worry that we will never be the same…
The House under the leadership of the DEMS has passed HR1…which would go a long way to encoding the norms into law and addressing the corruption…but that will require controling the Senate and ending the Filibuster….there are two DEM senators Manchin and Tester who have said that they will not vote to end the filibuster….

some folks will say that there was always some form of disregard for all of this…and i agree…but what was different was that we strove for Justice…decency…a more perfect union…

        that veneer has been tarnished…

        • November 7, 2019 at 12:15 pm

It sickens me to think of the fall of the NATO alliance and for Europe to look to Russia for leadership. It’s just unfathomable but here we are.

I think Kyrsten Sinema has also voiced her refusal to change Senate rules. So much for a radical change or overhaul of our govt some candidates want.

My concern for the next Dem POTUS is there is so very much that has to be done to even restore us to a functioning government, to overturn all the harm Trump has done to our laws and regulatory functions. To take on a massive overhaul of our healthcare system will take years and a ton of persuasion not only of the people but also in Congress. And unless there is a strong component of cost containment, it would mean a tremendous addition for fed budget and fed govt to actually manage.

I don’t have any answers. I just feel like every day this fraud is in office is a day of democracy lost. And to see the GOP as his willing accomplices and co-conspirators just makes everything feel harder. I know we must win and I hope we have the ability to put the best foot forward but I tell you if Bernie Sanders is our candidate I am just going to have to check out. For the life of me I just cannot fathom how any thinking person believes he’d be a good president when he’s not got any foreign policy experience, no executive experience, barely any legislative achievements to speak of and he’s a major misogynist CRANK. UGH.

          • November 7, 2019 at 12:37 pm

It has only been 3 years…just 3 years for all of this to happen…although i know that the groundwork was laid years…decades before…We did not think that a Carnival Barker would win…we underestimated the far reaching effect of white supremacy and white nationalism…It Was Joe the Banker, Joe the Plumber, and Joe the factory worker who put Trump in office…We can not lose sight of that …those same folks will be out in force to vote for him again..We must expand the electorate…to bring out our Dem base and register new voters….and bring them to the polls..

The U.K. government has done little to protect upcoming elections:
      “The failure to act,
according to several U.K. politicians, civil servants and regulators who spoke to POLITICO,
      stems from widespread concern
that any revamp of electoral rules
could bring up uncomfortable questions about the
      LEGALITY
      of the 2016 Brexit referendum.”
      –Yes the legality!
GOP doesn’t want us to think about the LEGALITY of Trump in the WH either.

GOP swore off democracy a long time ago.
Trump sees himself: “I am the Law. So eff the rest of you.”
Cares about not getting found out. Doesn’t care about America. Cares about Putin + band of dictators + O & G, dreams of the Middle East, riches, and power-over.

What this effectively accomplishes is preventing the GOP nut jobs from trying to bring witnesses to speak to but what about HRC and PBO and all the rest of their nonsense. Every witness has to be able to specifically address the heart of the matter and no WHAT ABOUT THIS nonsense.

Trump is a two-bit reality show entertainer who is selling us all down the river, killing the planet to pay off
his debts and avoid criminal exposure. 50 years of expertise in getting away with Mafia crimes. I think we’re scratching the surface. Going back to reality entertainment to try and postpone the reckoning
        may be inevitable.

    Winning, optimism and heart.
DNC Chairman Ted Cruz on Hayes: “What I learned from this is we are a 50 state party.
We have been winning. 3 elections now Chris, in 2017, ’18, and ’19, and in every single election we’ve been able to win.…Everybody’s been working together in ways I think that are going to enable us to continue that momentum.
…it is always the right time to do the right thing. Democrats can walk and chew gum.
We have a constitutional obligation to focus on Impeachment, and your entire show has again presented the compelling evidence of a gross abuse of power. At the same time, we need to continue reminding as Andy Beshear did, and so many other candidates did last night, we need to continue reminding voters that we’re the party that’s fighting to make sure you can keep your health care if you have a pre-existing condition, we’re the party that has passed laws in the U.S. House of Representatives to do just that, to bring down the cost of prescription drugs, to take on the NRA. I mean, Virginia flipped blue last night Chris, in no small measure because a few months back, when there was a special session to try to address gun violence, the Republicans who were in charge, they gaveled it down in 90 minutes because they are in the pocket of the NRA. So when we lead with our values…”

$2 million no problem, he’ll go to his piggy bank, which are the gullible rubes that continue to fork over their money to him.

  48. November 7, 2019 at 2:37 pm

The reason it is important to articulate this big picture is that Democrats need to be clear about the fact that every time Republicans raise the ante on the unthinkable, the threads that hold our democracy together are frayed even further. Trump demonstrates that daily with his corruption and abuse of power. But when we get to the point that elections don’t matter—as might happen with Matt Bevin in Kentucky—it will be too late.

    Trashy Menashi hearing:
“This morning, however, Graham, Kennedy, and every other Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance Menashi’s nomination to the floor, where he’ll almost certainly be confirmed. That’s not too surprising — GOP senators nearly always serve as a rubber stamp for Trump’s far-right picks for the federal judiciary — but the vote came on the heels of this New York Times report, published yesterday, which common sense suggests should’ve at least given the Judiciary Committee pause.”
–Steve Benen lays out Menashi’s gross scams: (http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/gop-ignores-scandals-advances-controversial-judicial-nominee#break)
–DeVos (fined $100,000) continued to collect tons of cash from scammed victims even after the judge’s ruling.
–Benen remarks that the Menashi story, covered by Maddow last night, is a “doozy”.
