Speaker Pelosi is one Tough Lady.
I was critical of her last week.
I was skeptical of her coming to this decision. She did it.

    Good Morning TODbots.
If Dotard tRump thinks that what was just released was OK, he’s sadly mistaken. This is a crime. This is unpatriotic. His actions are destructive to our security.
GOP may keep covering for tRump. Dems must keep it simple on US Security. Rule of Law. Patriotism. Our Constitution & The Republic for which #weThePeople stand.

    “Editor’s Note (politicus.usa):
While Trump promised to release an unredacted transcript, he did not do so.
The Trump White House released a “summary” of his call,
much like Attorney General Bill Barr released a “summary” of the Mueller report,
which turned out to be misleadingly inaccurate
and which he later had to walk back and claim was not a “summary.””

“…This inquiry was not taken up for partisan reasons and it does not prejudge an outcome. Our Framers in their wisdom, assigned to one Chamber of Commerce the right to accuse, and to the other the right to judge. The House of Representatives will investigate and determine whether sufficient evidence exists to accuse the President of an impeachable offense, or impeachable offenses. If it comes to that, the Senate will be the scene of the trial, Senators the jurors. We must take our responsibility with the utmost gravity. Our Framers, not trusting our liberty to one branch of government alone, afraid of the ever-present danger of tyranny of an over-reaching executive, provided a remedy to Congress should the executive attempt to subvert or violate the Constitution of the United States.
We are not yet at the stage where any judgements can be made one way or the other, but I remind my colleagues today that if the day should come when we are called upon to carry out our constitutional duty, history will judge whether we did so faithfully, or not. History will judge if each of us acted as a solemn juror of democracy who placed fidelity to the Constitution and our system of Government above the narrow considerations of partisan politics.” (Senator Schumer)

Joseph Maguire, acting director of national intelligence,
is set to face a public grilling on Thursday over his refusal to disclose the
whistleblower complaint to the committee, as required by law.
But members of the committee have made clear they don’t expect him to cooperate, even if he shows up.
At least one member of the panel, Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), favors reviving Congress’ “inherent contempt” authority — an arcane and extreme process which involves levying fines against or even jailing individuals who refuse to comply with congressional subpoenas. And he said it should be in the quiver when Maguire testifies.
“It is high time for the Congress to begin employing its power of inherent contempt. We can hold people in contempt and sanction them,” Himes said in an interview. “It should be on the table for any witness who either refuses to testify or refuses to produce documents.”
    –FACT: The law says “SHALL”.
    –If Magure balks:
–Time to deploy inherent contempt = Fines or Jai time.

This is why we must all demand better from the GOP.
    They broke the System.
It’s time for them to pay for the consequences.

    • September 25, 2019 at 1:06 pm

Cindy McCain is saying this is not the republican party she and John McCain were part of.
For starters: This version of GOP is lackeying and paving the way for Putin (+ others), trying to end Government as we have known it, ending norms, ending checks and balances, decimating democracy and rule of law, knocking out alternatives to fossil fuels, dismantling the EPA while getting rid of health care. Dividing us while refusing to pass gun safety. And speeding up the climate crisis, which can ultimately only be out-run by the very wealthy. (I will not mention ethnonationalism.)

        September 25, 2019 at 2:33 pm

This is in fact the exact same party that Cindy and Maverick belonged to. It is the same party that Maverick chose “Lady Chaos” as his running mate. And Maverick also voted against making MLK a federal holiday in 1983. She can keep her fake outrage.

        • September 25, 2019 at 4:15 pm

Corporate strategy in all thing yes.
But working for the demise of Democracy was never this clear.
Trump GOP being beholden to Russia and other authoritarians, dictators + nations hostile to America wasn’t happening back in the day. (Think the new Graham.)
Putin hadn’t quite figured out how he was going to take us down then…there has been a process..
Oil oligarchs are poised to run the globe using ethnonationalism with evangelists very much on board.
The Arctic is melting so we are seeing the Koch libertarians doing an economic and environmental decimation test run up there, with the idea of handing it all over to the Oil overlords. Putin just across the way in Siberia … hey it is the fossil fuel climate denial dream team.
No this is a different kind of day. And we have to suit up and stop it not just here but across the globe.
–Canada is next on the far right attack list.

Kinda reminds me of the movie ‘Casino’, the mob was given Vegas on a silver platter and they fucked it up. And they were never given anything important again. Trump was given the presidency and he fucked it up, and now hopefully it will be taken away from him.

    Benen on MaddowBlog:
“The entirety of the document is available online here (pdf), posted to the White House’s website.
It is not an actual, literal transcript,
but the memo purports to give a rough approximation of what the two leaders discussed during their 30-minute July 25 phone call.
And after reading it, I haven’t the foggiest idea why Trump or anyone in his orbit would think it’s good for him.
Some of the details that stood out for me:
    * Trump twice told Zelenskiy that the United States has been “very, very good” to Ukraine, shortly before the American president asks for a political “favor” from his counterpart.
    * Trump argued, “I heard you had a prosecutor who was very good and he was shut down and that’s really unfair. A lot of people are talking about that, the way they shut your very good prosecutor down and you had some very bad people involved.” He seemed to be referring to a prosecutor who’d been the subject of international condemnations for staggering ineptitude.
    * Trump urged Zelenskiy to cooperate with Rudy Giuliani, who was trying to dig up dirt on Joe Biden. “Mr. Giuliani is a highly respected man,” the memo quotes the American president saying. “He was the mayor of New York City, a great mayor, and I would like him to call you. I will ask him to call you along with the Attorney General. Rudy very much knows what’s happening and he is a very capable guy. If you could speak to him that would be great.”
    * Speaking of the attorney general, Trump also suggested Zelenskiy should coordinate with Bill Barr: “There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it. It sounds horrible to me.”
    * Trump also appears to have referenced “servers” and “Crowdstrike,” suggesting he expected Ukraine to also help dig up dirt related to Hillary Clinton’s emails.
Far from an exoneration, the newly released memo points to an American president pressing the leader of
Ukraine to work with his team on targeting a domestic political rival.
What’s more, this damaging revelation is only a piece of a larger puzzle – and the emerging picture may yet look worse if/when we see the complaint from the intelligence community’s whistleblower.”
Steve Benen: “The case for Trump’s impeachment just got stronger.”

    September 25, 2019 at 3:13 pm

I think trump will resign rather than risk getting impeached, his thinking is that with a resignation he can pretty much control the environment. But with an impeachment, trump is at the mercy of the House and Senate. I’m pretty sure that trump and his closest allies have had that talk.

i suppose he is not worried about criminal indictments

      • 91 Don
        September 25, 2019 at 3:45 pm

I forgot who said it but a grand jury would indict a ham sandwich if a prosecutor ask them to. Criminal Defense lawyers anticipate indictments, the trail is what they look forward to. Win or lose they go home at the end of the day. What I’m saying is that trump and his lawyers have discussed him resigning as a way of getting out of Washington intact. And as soon as he steps back in New York they know the indictments are coming fast and furious.

    Chairman Schiff this morning:
“It is shocking at another level that the White House would release these notes and felt that somehow this would help the president’s case or cause because what those notes reflect is a classic mafia-like shakedown of a foreign leader. They reflect a Ukrainian president who was desperate for U.S. Support, for military support, to help that country in a hot war with Putin’s Russia, a country that is still occupied by irregular Russian forces, in which people face a very dangerous and continuing and destabilizing action by their aggressive neighbor. And at the same time, a president of the United States who immediately after the Ukraine president expresses the need for further weapons, tells the Ukraine president that he has a favor to ask. The president communicates to his Ukrainian counterpart that the United States has done a lot for Ukraine…’we’ve done an awful lot for Ukraine, more than the Europeans have done for Ukraine…but there is not much reciprocity here.’ This is how a mafia boss talks. ‘What have you done for us, we’ve done so much for you – but there’s not much reprocity! I have a favor I want to ask of you.’ And what is that favor? Of course the favor is to investigate his political rival, to investigate
    the Bidens.”
