About two weeks ago my son and I were at the gym in our subdivision. I was on the treadmill and he was somewhere else lifting weights. The treadmills are located right at the front door as soon as you walk in. Anyway I was on the treadmill and this young guy in his early twenties walks in and sits in a chair right by the front door. He wasn’t doing anything but just looking around. For some reason it freaked me out, he was white and dressed in all black. I couldn’t even concentrate on my workout. In the past I wouldn’t have paid any attention to some young white guy going about his business. About ten minutes later the lady that runs the gym came up and shook his hand, apparently he came in to join the gym. All the time as he was sitting there I’m thinking about what to do if he had pulled out a gun or something, was it to run towards him or run away from him? After we left the gym I’m thinking to myself, did I just profile this guy?
Honestly, this is what is happening to us as the veil of trust is getting thinner and thinner and thinner. We’re hyper-alert to danger because it’s happening all around us and it’s destroying our sense of trust in just being able to be pursue normal daily activity.
