What ho my TOD Peeps! In case anyone is looking for the 1619 project published in the New York Times Magazine yesterday (Sunday Aug 18), here is link to a PDF of the full magazine. I went looking for the Sunday NY Times yesterday afternoon in my neck of the woods in LA, and could not find nary a copy. It was sold out everywhere I went–which I’m taking as a positive sign that folks were out here getting to learn more of our American history.

The fire is back! Way to go Beto!!! Last election (2016) thousands of Native Americans were not allowed to voted because they had a PO Box! Lots of Native Americans that live on reservations only have PO Boxes!
Native Americans…not allowed to vote because of “new voting” laws. If I was rich I would of taken up that issue and had it fixed. Disgraceful what these people have been through and continue to go through.
I hope Beto keeps up his Fire! We need that in our candidates.

You got me excited, for sure! Suppressing the vote of Native Americans is unfreakinbelievable. If any of the guilty parties believe in hell, they should consider that their ticket in. Grrrr.

“This is just one example of how authoritarian regimes use social media to manipulate people, at home and abroad. ” My oh my….just reading that statement I was thinking the authoritarian regimes they were talking about were Russia and the USA.
Too bad Americans have not mounted such a response as these protestors in Hong Kong.

For awhile I wanted Biden and Harris. Now I am thinking Biden and Warren. I still am closer to being a moderate as compared to a far left liberal although I support many of the very liberal ideals. I think Biden at the top will give stability and familiarity to the ticket and help us gain back world respect. A competent woman in the VP position sitting in and advising and given an active role as Biden was as VP could prepare them for a successful run the next election in 2024. Do not misunderstand me I know The women are ready, but it may take longer for some Americans to accept this. As I write that I reject my own words as I heard that when Obama ran, but then I said to those saying that the time for change is now and the best way to do it is to just do it. I think I hesitate this time due to my any Dem over Trump thinking. I still do not support Sanders, Gabbard, or Williamson unless they are the only ones left.

Good West Coast morning Nena, NW, and TOD family. I agree Nena, and will do all I can to keep Sanders from raising to the top.
My caregiver is a lovely young woman in her mid 30’s from Honduras and I’ve been discussing politics with her and encouraging her to become informed. She and her family & friends are now on Team Biden. It made me happy that she listened and did her research and came to her own conclusion. The minority vote is crucial !

“Donald Trump and the Republican Party hate America: It’s time to say it.”
“For most of modern political history, the Republican Party has used patriotism —
an odd and obfuscating sentimentality — as a weapon to shame critics of American foreign policy, and turn the general public against dissidents who reject the folly of Empire maintenance through violence.
Samuel Johnson’s excoriation — made famous by Bob Dylan — that “patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels” always seemed accurate in both its denunciation of the manipulative emotion itself, and also of those who take advantage of it for political expediency. America…where the scoundrels are so brazen in their inhumanity, so bold in their indifference to suffering, and so barbaric in their refusal to compromise for the sake of their own country…
President Donald Trump, his enablers in Congress and his most devoted supporters are anti-American and
    soft on terrorism.”

Racism, the power of whiteness is extraordinary. For some of our citizens it defines who they are and they cling to it.i do not know if it can truly be weeded out.

“Creator of New York Times slavery project not surprised by conservative meltdown.”
On 1619: Hannah Jones to Chris Hayes:
“The whole reason we did the project in the first place is because our society has been unwilling to grapple with the legacy of slavery, with the centrality of slavery to the development of the United States.”
“Anyone [who] would call this a propaganda tool or that somehow I’d spent, you know, since February working on this to commemorate the anniversary because we, the New York Times, wanted to ‘get’ Trump is, of course, ridiculous…negative reaction among many white conservatives who want to cling to a version of American history that places them at the exclusive center of the story…we’re simply revealing the truth about our country.”

you are so right..but I am not really gleeful about it…because although it hurts them ….it will hurt all of us eventually…and because that white privilege goes deeeeeeeep…they will go down with the ship rather than get into the lifeboat with the rest us…

“they will go down with the ship rather than get into the lifeboat with the rest us…”

Yep, like I said many times before, to some people it matters a great deal who saves them. President Obama faced that same problem, here he was trying to save people by basically throwing them a lifeline, but their racism would not allow them to be saved by a black man. Unfortunately trying to reach them is also a waste of time and energy because their hated is ingrained in them.

Senator Chris Murphy: “The mythology in the Republican party that if you cross the NRA you will lose a primary election or lose a general election against the Democrat. That’s just not true. It’s never been true. The NRA has never been as powerful as Republicans think they are. Today the NRA is in absolute chaos. Their board is in meltdown. People aren’t signing up to be members of the NRA and the way they used to. So, there is no risk in crossing the gun lobby today and there really wasn’t much of a risk five or ten years ago. But that perception of power the gun lobby has stopped a lot of Republicans from crossing that bridge and standing with the 90% of their constituents that want universal background checks.”

    • August 20, 2019 at 1:38 pm

“Each mass shooting pushes the NRA a little bit closer to extinction as a political force.” (Easley)
–And imo fact is the greedy murderous gun manufacturers and nra leadership has been OK with intimidating + brutalizing all who live in America. No one is exempt.

“If Boris Johnson seriously believes the US will shower rewards on Britain after leaving the EU he is mistaken.”
Even as “Trump’s trade war and economic policies are increasing the risk of a global recession, and threaten the very integrity of the UK amid growing signals that Northern Ireland and Scotland would consider breaking away.” (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/20/donald-trump-uk-trade-brexit-chaos-boris-johnson-us-eu)
Eh well sounds familiar…after 3 years of manufactured hell on wheels the British public are aghas and hypnotized (when they could push for a 2nd referendum)…have been conned into spectating their demise…while another lying trumpy empty suit following orders pretends he knows how to handle their economy.

Thank you! I have my own B.B. King story (it’s all about me). Once I was traveling with my Mother, going south on I-75 in Florida, in the late ’90s. A bus whizzed by and I noticed it was his tour bus! Told my Mother and I decided to follow it, because there was a rest stop coming up and I was planning a “meeting.” Ha. But the bus zoomed ahead and tore off onto the exit ramp for the rest stop and that made me think twice, because I was so very tempted to break all speed limits to try to get a look at him. I calmed down since who knew if he were on the bus or not (or just his traveling crew) and so we continued to head south and not stop. But, truth be told, I always regretted not catching up with him, so I could at least try to shake his hand! Ha. The end.

I have a few such brushes (Ha!), and another favorite was the unexpected hug I got from Ossie Davis when I was introduced to him at an awards event connected to my job working for the Navy. Also once in the late ’60s, my BF and I met the country singer Ray Price while he was on break and sitting in his car in the parking lot. Let’s just say that although he apparently was stoned beyond belief, he went back in to the venue and sang like an angel. Ha. Okay, I’ll stop with the ancient stories. 🙂
