  24. August 15, 2019 at 9:55 am

    Rachel Maddow:
“The short story here about Mitch McConnell is that he, more than anybody else in Washington, has blocked U.S. efforts to constrain or respond to Russia’s recent attacks. That’s why they’re calling him Moscow Mitch now.
But in this particular instance, his state, an economically disadvantaged part of his state, got a $200 million investment from a kremlin-connected oligarch immediately after McConnell personally stepped in to make sure sanctions on that oligarch were dropped, despite his role in what happened to our election in 2016 and despite bipartisan support even from his own party for those sanctions. But don’t just look back at this. Look forward. Right? I mean, the FBI says Russia’s going to do to our election in 2020 what they did to it in 2016. No reason to expect 2020 is going to be any different.”

    • August 15, 2019 at 9:56 am

Maddow: “If Oleg Deripaska is one of the two or three oligarchs Putin looks to get his work done around the world, given what we know he did in 2016, should we expect Deripaska is going to be involved in Russia’s 2020 operations as well? You have to say the odds of that are better now than they were before Mitch Mcconnell sold off this corner of his state…..(see link)….But now, Oleg Deripaska’s business activities, the health of his business empire, that’s part and parcel of the hard-scrabble economy in one of Kentucky’s neediest economies.”

    • August 15, 2019 at 9:56 am

Maddow: “This is a plant that’s over a billion dollars. 40% owned by the company of this kremlin-connected oligarch. You’re not going to be able to sanction him no matter what he does to our 2020 election or whatever else he does at all. It would strangle Kentucky in the process. There would be hundreds, if not thousands of American jobs riding on anything you did to that Russian guy’s company or, frankly, anything you did to bother him. He now holds all of those American jobs in his hand. The U.S. Government does anything to bother him, he can take them away at will. You can’t do anything to his company, not without him exerting that leverage over Kentucky in response. And that damage has already been done.”

    • August 15, 2019 at 9:58 am

Jason Easley: “McConnell did this to cement the relationship between Russia and the Republican Party. Republicans can now claim that Russian business interests, like the one in Kentucky, can’t be sanctioned, because if they are, it will hurt American jobs. If a future Democratic Congress and president would sanction a Russian oligarch with a business interest in the US, Republicans can use that to claim that Democrats are killing jobs. Moscow Mitch has gone beyond leaving the backdoor unlocked for Russia to interfere in US elections. He has rolled out the red carpet and given Putin a seat at the political table by inviting Russia in through the front door of the US economy.”
“McConnell’s actions are nothing less than economic treason.”

        FACT:
Moscow Mitch McConnell blocked ALL jobs bills, including veterans bills, while PBO was saving working overtime to save the U.S. and world economy from a 2nd Depression.

  34. August 15, 2019 at 1:47 pm

Chairman Nadler on Israel denying entry to Reps Omar and Tlaib:
““It is utterly egregious for the Israeli government to deny entry to two sitting members of the United States Congress. The close relationship enjoyed by the United States and Israel should extend to all its government representatives, regardless of their views on specific issues or policies. This decision undermines the ability for our two allied countries to have the frank, open and, at times, difficult discussions that we must have in order to ensure Israel remains a secure and democratic nation.
“I strongly condemn this decision and urge the Israeli government to allow entry to these Congresswomen and welcome them in the respectful, dignified manner to which they are entitled as official representatives of the United States.”

    • August 15, 2019 at 1:49 pm

Israel blocked the two Congresswomen after the Snake-In-Chief Trump Benito tweeted for them to be denied entry. He mega-lied by saying: “They hate Israel and all Jewish people, and there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds.”

    Robert Reich:
“This trade war with China – not only is there no strategy, but it also is extremely dangerous,” Reich stressed to Melber. “(These are) the largest and second-largest economies in the entire world, and to have them going at each other is dangerous for the whole world economy.”
“When it comes to economic policy, Reich warned, Trump is erratic and unfocused.”
“This is a president who not only doesn’t know detail, but he lies about the details he does know,” Reich told Melber. “So no, there’s not going to be any focus. There’s no economic strategy.”

    Economic Policy Institute:
“CEO pay has risen 940% since 1978. The typical worker’s pay has risen 11.9%:
The left-leaning Economic Policy Institute reports that CEO compensation continues to be very high compared with typical worker compensation (by a ratio of 278-to-1 or 221-to-1). That ratio has soared over the past half-century. The CEO-to-typical-worker compensation ratio with stock options realized was 20-to-1 in 1965
and 58-to-1 in 1989.” (Daily Kos)

This question implies that it must be one or the other. In my opinion, building on President Obama’s legacy does not exclude taking a new approach on some issues…especially given this climate where Republicans have thrown away core vales of our democracy and are kowtowing to the current occupant of the WH who has added more toxicity to the swamp he pledged to drain.

Any approach with the goal of improving the lives of the poor and working class (health care, education, jobs, etc.), improves our environment, and raises our standing in the world represents HOPE and CHANGE and is a continuation of the Obama legacy. Don’t let the media frame a different approach as an attack on/denouncement of the Obama administration.

    The 1619 Project
The 1619 Project is a major initiative from The New York Times observing the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.

Brian Williams’ last segment mentioned some of the history of America we’re commemorating this month … how we opened the Panama Canal … VJ Day, helping to “save the world” …

… and he compared some of that with the fact that today – in 2019 – the elected officials in the city of Newark, New Jersey, cannot get clean drinking water delivered through the pipes of the homes of the people who live there because there is lead in the pipes, so the residents must stand in the summer heat in long lines to pick up heavy bottled water packs to take home because the city leaders can’t deliver the bottled water to them, either …

… well done, Brian, on pushing that perspective and those non-priorities, which is freaking unbelievable.

“President Obama is a global leader and a longtime friend of the green building community. While in office, his administration negotiated the landmark Paris Climate Accords, expanded the impact of our field and helped open the door for energy efficiency investments in both the public and private sectors. I know that when he joins us on the keynote stage in November, he will impart his ideas, passion and vision to our growing global green building family.”

“Barack H. Obama is the 44th President of the United States. He took office at a moment of crisis unlike any America had seen in decades – a nation at war, a planet in peril, the American Dream itself threatened by the worst economic calamity since the Great Depression.
And yet, despite all manner of political obstruction,
Obama’s leadership helped rescue the economy, revitalize the American auto industry, reform the health care system to cover another 20 million Americans, and put the country on a firm course to a clean energy future –all while overseeing the longest stretch of job creation in American history. “
