On Climate Crisis and Global Heating.
Movement to use the terms ‘climate crisis’ and ‘global heating’.
“Why the Guardian is changing the language it uses about the environment”: (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/may/17/why-the-guardian-is-changing-the-language-it-uses-about-the-environment)

“The phrase ‘climate change’, for example, sounds rather passive and gentle when what scientists are talking about is a catastrophe for humanity.” (editor-in-chief Katharine VIner)
Prof Richard Betts, who leads the Met Office’s climate research, said “global heating” was a more accurate term than “global warming” to describe the changes taking place to the world’s climate. In the political world, U.K. MPs recently endorsed the Labour party’s declaration of a “climate emergency”.
-Cimate crisis and global heating is settled science. Happening now.
-And BBC yes, yes, thank you: “You do not need a ‘denier’ to (fake) balance the debate.” (npr take note)

Thank you for this post and this happy place, Nerdy, and a good Saturday to all!

Haven’t seen a clip to post yet, but highly recommend viewing Raskin’s impassioned take on where Congress stands, which he delivered on Joy’s show. I was practically standing up, screaming yeehaw back at him through the teevee. In my view, it’s not helping when we Democrats stop listening and only point fingers at each other. We need to have faith in the fact that our reps in Congress have brains and are just as dedicated to taking down trump as we all are. Raskin, I think, yelled it to the rooftops. And, yes, we must continue to remind them we are watching, every single day – I’m for that, as well!

We all have and are entitled to our own views on the process … but he showed the fighting spirit we must all retain, while being unified against the demon (meant literally) in the WH. Nancy Pelosi’s caucus is on it, and they’re following the course that the Constitution has given us. Nothing worth fighting for is ever easy. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for … we are the change that we seek.

“THERE WILL BE NO WAR.” (Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.)
Fact: “The 2015 deal aimed to cut sanctions on Iran in exchange for an end to its nuclear programme, but (Trump) withdrew from it last year and imposed new sanctions.” Fact: Trump-Bolton have “deployed warships and planes to the Gulf and ordered the departure of “non-emergency employees” from Iraq, citing intelligence about a potential threat to US forces by Iran.”
-Ben Rhodes: Bolton is “trying to goad Iran into giving him a pretext for this war.”
-Again Zarif: “There will be no war”.

As I sit back and think about my ancestors’ arrival to this country, and all the way up to present day I can’t help but also think about this country’s present predicament. Almost every right is under attack from this administration. Here in America there are some communities that have never known peace, that have never experienced the full breadth and width of what America has to offer, goddamnit. I’ll try to finish my thoughts on this some other time.

I don’t know, I’m just pissed that this shit has gotten this far, all because a whole lotta people felt some kind of way that a Black man dared to run this motherfucker. And now we find ourselves running full steam ahead into certain oblivion. The current occupant at 1600 fucked everything that moved, bankrupted every company that his racist father gave him, and beyond a doubt colluded with the Russians to steal an election. But the thing is, he didn’t do it in the dark, he did it in broad daylight. And they had help, they had help from the ever gullible American.

    -WIN! WIN! against big oil!!
Major precedent for indigenous rights and respect:
“Millions of acres of rainforest saved: A tiny Amazon tribe just defeated big oil in a historic lawsuit.”
The Ecuadorian government wanted to drill for oil through seven million acres of land in the Amazon. However, their efforts were stopped thanks to the Waorani people of Pastaza, who won a historic court ruling against the government. The lawsuit represented 16 Waorani communities who live inside the Ecudorian jungle…The ruling immediately protects have a million acres from government-sanctioned drilling but also puts a stop to a planned auctioning seven million additional acres of land that would have gone to private companies who wanted to set up oil exploration operations.” (https://www.upworthy.com/millions-of-acres-of-rainforest-saved-a-tiny-amazon-tribe-just-defeated-big-oil-in-a-historic-lawsuit)
…heard leo dicaprio helped. proud of his work…
    “Our territory is our decision,
and now, since we are owners,
we are not going to let oil enter and destroy our natural surroundings and kill our culture.”
    (Waorani leader Nemonte Nenquimo)

      -Thanks NW-
my sister (2 children) took her life 13 years after being duped by an abuser who initially played Prince Charming. An extraordinary and down-to-earth person, for some reason she was in denial. Though her Dad and siblings saw this guy clearly right away. I’ve known others get married after only a short time because they were pregnant and same thing happened…wishing women would take time and be willing to know more before involving children.

      • 32 Don
        May 18, 2019 at 2:32 pm

I had an aunt in the same situation, the abused always thinks that the abuser just needs to be loved a little more, or needs more attention, or needs to be understood more. And then you add children to the mix, the entire situation becomes unavoidable. It is almost like a slow motion accident, all of the witnesses know what’s going to happen except the abused.

    • May 18, 2019 at 2:33 pm

something i haven’t said out loud is that just before she died my sister told me she suspected her young daughter was being abused by him. Also that he had threatened to take my life. My mind couldn’t go there at first. The Coroner said his behavior reminded him of his own father. I got nowhere because the father shipped the children out of the country, probably silenced with threats. We always wonder how the mother allows these things to go on, but I found out later that she tried many times to leave. He even held on to the ashes and took the photos. In his only call to me after my precious sister died, he said he had somehow “seen me naked” as a teen. Denegration is a power strategy.
(And incidentally the key to what is being done to the American people right now.)

      Final 4 mins:
“…that challenge has been handed to us…
will we be the ones to let the government of, by and for the people perish from the face of the Earth? are we going to let that happen? dare we let that happen? Absolutely not! We will not! I will not! You will not! …the United States is a beacon of hope for the world…will not be extinguished on my watch or yours…here’s the amazing thing about this moment in history, on the one hand we’re facing the biggest threat…in our entire lifetime. On the other hand we’ve never had a future that’s more promising…I’ve said many times I am more optimistic about America’s future today than when I got elected. (I’m not young enough to be sworn in as a United States senator at age 29). Here’s why. Folks we are better positioned than any nation in the world to lead the 21st century and I’ve traveled the world and met most of the world’s leaders. They know without us they can’t lead. Our workers are 3 times as productive as workers in Asia and that’s a fact. Number one we have the biggest economy in the world, we have the strongest military in the history of the world. We have the most innovative entrepreneurs. We are virtually energy independent and we have more great research universities in the city, this state, this country than all the world combined. Fact! No other nation, no other nation can match us. If we step up! We lead by the power of our example, not by the example of our power. The only thing that can tear America apart is America itself, and we can not let that happen. Everybody knows who Donald Trump is – even his supporters know who he is. But I have to let you know. Here’s the deal. We have to let them know who WE are, what we stand for. We choose hope over fear. Truth over lies. And yes unity over division. It’s time for us to lift our heads up, open our hearts and remember who we are. We are the United States of America. There’s not a single thing we cannot do together.
God bless you all and may God protect our troops!”

Absolutely. All his points are ‘spot on.’ Don’t you wonder if his ‘coming out’ will break the damn? I’m guessing the answer to that is no. At least right now. If the Dems would begin playing hardball—fining and if necessary, jailing these people and if they would begin hearings getting the truth and information out to the citizens, I do think a few Rs like this guy would begin a bigger ‘stream’ of folks.

    The thread

    • 60 marleysperson
      May 18, 2019 at 5:09 pm

      Part of his excellent thread:

      • May 18, 2019 at 5:52 pm

Thank you df for expanding the thread.

Following from Jill Wine-Banks is relevant:

“The media landscape today deprives us of an agreed set of facts. Viewers of MSNBC see different facts than those who watch Fox. Without a common base for discussion, we can never reach consensus, but a public hearing could change that by letting the American people observe witnesses’ words and demeanors for themselves. The bubbles we all live in can be penetrated by such evidence, just as it was in the Manafort trial and the Watergate Senate and impeachment hearings.

This is why we must have public hearings. With the testimony of witnesses who can be evaluated by all Americans, I fully anticipate Trump’s support will further erode. Public hearings made a difference in the case of Nixon. As Blumenthal says, “the more the public knew of Nixon’s crimes through public televised hearings, the more rapidly Nixon’s poll numbers crumbled.” And, I’d add, the more bipartisan support for impeachment grew.

Not only will impeachment of Trump not hurt Democrats in 2020, it is essential to preserving Congress as a co-equal branch of government as our Founders intended and is essential to Congress fulfilling its constitutional and moral obligations.”

“Joe Biden Hits Trump Right Between His Racist Eyes.”
““Let me ask you, are we a nation that believes there is a moral equivalence between white supremacist and neo-nazi and the Ku Klux Klan and those with the courage to stand against them. No, we don’t. But Trump does. Trump said there is a moral equivalence. Are we a nation that believes ripping children from the arms of their parents at the border? No, we don’t. But Trump does. Are we a nation that embraces dictators and tyrants like Putin and Kim Jong-un? We don’t, but trump does. Look, every day we’re reminded about this — in this election about we have to remember who we are and what we stand for and what we believe. And every day we’re reminded there is nothing guaranteed about our democracy. We have to fight for it. We have to defend it. We have to earn it. We have to earn it.” (Jason Easley)

$17 million of that $22 million came from one anonymous donor.
