This is what we should do on election day instead of for a funeral. The federal govt. was not shut down for Reagan or Ford’s funerals , don’t know why it is necessary to do this especially during the Christmas rush season. The stories are important and imo so important that they be made public. ’60 minutes’ and organizations for girls at risk, how about it? The wealthy in America also have a big corner on (domestic) slavery.
Will never forget talking with a teenage German ‘au pair’ left with 3 little children for months in a Seattle cafe, while the parents went abroad on continuous vacation. The little ones and the young girl seemed to be in an alternate reality of weariness and neglect. The young girl was paid next to nothing aside from room and board. Her situation is not unusual.
A friend of mine had be rescued by her father from France. She was supposed to be there as a student, her visa was somehow changed and had her listed as an au pair and her Passport was taken. Her father, who had never been out of the country, managed to get there and bring her home. In another case when the original placement did not work out, a teacher from Anguila took the student in supposedly to be kind, but the girl would up doing all kinds of house work. The teacher had years of manipulating younger people, by first acting kind and then using the them for all kinds of personal and work favors (nothing sexual). I had to almost de-program one young teacher that the older one had supposedly helped at one time and had this young woman picking up and babysitting her kid, taking her teaching resources and other things.

Yesterday I picked my son up from school, as he entered the car, he greeted me with his usual, what’s for dinner I told him leftovers. He didn’t seem to mind seeing as him and his mother have this thing where he leaves her little notes that say I love you and can you make such and such for dinner. Only recently did she tell me that he would leave notes in the car when she dropped him off at school. Back when I was his age it wasn’t like that at all, at certain times we didn’t even have a car, and sometimes we didn’t even have dinner, but that’s another story. So, we get home from school and I go upstairs to get on the computer and watch t.v. and listen to music. Anyway, my son comes upstairs and gets on his computer and does his homework, which to my amazement, the teacher puts his homework online and he does it online and gets graded for it right then and there. I seem to spend most of my time thinking about the past and my son seems to spend most of his time thinking about the future.
rant about on-line: along with the desire to hack up University operating budgets, reduce Departments, cut lifetime faculty (and end tenure – think Walker) there is a push by the right (guessing Koch is involved) towards on-line learning. Ok this method may help to reach the rural learner. But it is very time consuming to provide, no less expensive, is another blah commodity product, and I see it as another attempt to undermine the unsurpassed role of our living educators. …will we make a stand against robots on behalf of our children? Instead of moving to on-line let’s inspire and hire an army of thousands more human teachers, revere and pay them as well as they do on other continents.
Just last year when he was in 7th grade he had to do a PowerPoint for his science class, his assignment was on Hurricanes. Oh I agree I agree, nothing will ever beat an actual brick and mortar University or College.
