May I break in, for something sweet? My third-oldest granddaughter is finally going for her driver’s license. She’s been nervous about it for years, since she had a rough couple of first times practice driving and kept putting it off. But she went for a long drive today, with her driver’s permit in hand and a calm driver sitting next to her, and felt really good about it and called to tell me. Then she sent me a photo of a 3×5″ card with words on it from her Dad. She keeps the card in her wallet. When my son passed away in late March and his children were all here, and before four of them left to return to Florida, I’d asked them to go through some of their Dad’s things and take whatever they wanted (I have the cutest photo of all five of them wearing his hats and shirts, standing in a row by height in my backyard – love it). The index card had some notes on it that my son (who was a commercial truck driver) had written out for my grandson, when he was teaching him how to drive a year or so ago.
Thought I’d share the words, because we all think they’re more like “Dad’s Instructions for Life” – and what a treasure they are, especially now. He wrote:
Aim high when steering
Make sure they see you
Leave yourself an out
Get the big picture
Keep your eyes moving
