I’ll be like Michael Avenatti (whom I admire greatly) and predict: Kavanaugh will withdraw before the Thursday hearing.

Please let this guess be right!

Then I hope the women press charges, since there’s no statute of limitations in MD.

Co-signing on both comments. She is so compromised that she makes me sick to the stomach. Repubs groom Black people like her and they wind up being apologists for the most heinous acts by the party. They can never go home again because we have long memories. Whatever she thought that she got from them when they first crossed her path is not worth it in the log run.

Total chaos. The trump’s in NYC to walk around the UN, bellowing at others. Rosenstein is apparently summoned to the WH, possibly to be fired by others because trump can’t handle it. KavaNOugh is coming up with more lies behind the scenes, as more women come forward. Grassley is just waking up.

Absolutely nothing is getting done by trump and his lethal administration that is for the good of the American people.

  61. September 24, 2018 at 11:31 am

I transcribed what I thought was one of the most important elements of President Obama’s conversation with Jon Favreau, released today at Crooked Media. It’s worth listening or reading and thinking about.

President Obama on the question of whether Trump’s presidency represents a departure from the typical republican democrat fights and debates or if he’s a result of the sort of darker elements of republican politics that have been around for decades as well as the failure of the political establishment to meet the broader challenges of globalization.

PBO: Both/and. My estimation right now is that my successor is a symptom and now perhaps an accelerant of some trends that have been there for a while. We saw during my presidency, they date back further than that, the sense that you have a type of politics that says there’s some people who are more deserving of the rights, privileges, benefits of being an American and others who are less worthy of regard, concern and opportunity; the use of race and social issues, particularly around the status of women, to stoke fear; the use of anti-immigrant sentiment as a way to distract. A lot of it bankrolled by very wealthy people who just want to keep their privileges and their status and who have always fought against the possibilities of a democracy creating a more just and equitable economic structure where everybody’s got a chance at making a decent living and supporting a family. All that stuff has been going on for the last 20, 30, 100 years.

What maybe makes this moment different is that in it’s most recent iteration prior to Trump being elected you know the Republican party would use those kind of political tactics during election time but when governing still felt constrained by a set of institutional standards and norms. We saw more and more of those begin to get violated during my presidency, the debt ceiling crisis being an example of the notion that you would default essentially on America’s debts. The Garland nomination situation where you just decide what, for a year you’re just not gonna even consider a nominee for an open Supreme Court seat. You started to see that stuff breakdown but with still I guess some shame about it, a little bit of embarrassment, an attempt to hide it. And you know, my mom always used to say, guilt is actually a very valuable emotion. You know, shame, guilt, it’s useful to constrain people’s behavior. And what you’ve seen over the last two years is there’s just no shame. And the sense that basic norms about not interfering with a criminal investigation, having some semblance of consistency in argument, being fact-based in policy debates. You know, there’s a sense now that none of that matters and that’s a shift that is disruptive, that is significant because if, in fact, those norms don’t hold together and everything’s up for grabs, then the possibilities of governing becoming impossible in a country this big and this diverse with so many different points of view; the possibilities of not just gridlock but the use of the state and the apparatus of the criminal justice system for example to go after and silence opposition; the ability to start entrenching whoever is in power and using the power of the state to pump out propaganda. All that becomes possible and so that’s the kind of thing that I think we all have to consider for the first time in my lifetime, that the basic structure of our democracy is not something that we can take for granted. We have to tend to it, we have to work on it, we have to fight for it, we have to continually redefine it and burnish it and make it alive and not think that it’s just some machine there that automatically functions no matter who’s in charge or no matter how much we participate. Which is why, you know, you said at the beginning that you wanted to talk about message. My message in this upcoming election is very simple. It’s vote.

Yep. I’ve been canvassing for Jennifer Wexton in Northern Va with my husbands union. They are working hard to get Barbara Comstock out of that congressional seat. My local Dems are working to replace Hogan here in MD and I think that’s a futile effort. Hogan has governed as a (old fashioned) moderate for the most part and has an 80% approval rating in this state. And I am just not a fan of Ben Jealous. I think he has been an awful candidate. He has no appeal and is only faguely known throughout the state.

          • September 24, 2018 at 1:18 pm

UGH, sorry you’ll be stuck with Hogan. I wonder why Dems can’t field a better candidate? Governorships will be crucial for the census. Comstock is a blight and I really hope there’s a chance to see her exit.

My Forever President, breaking it all down like a fraction about the decline of our democracy without using the “scary big words” fascism and authoritarianism that folks (not folks here) seem to want to be in denial about. I love the fact that he’s laid out all the historical context of how our democracy got here too. Didn’t happen overnight, these Repugnants have been laying in the cut for decades waiting;it’s the no shame, no guilt put them over the top. He is always a teacher isn’t he? I don’t know what the truth is. I read on DKos that ONLY Sessions can fire Rod Rosenstein. If true Rod can hold out until he fires Sessions first, then the replacement can fire Rod Rosenstein and either fire Mueller or slow down the whole process. Over the weekend the pundits and commenters said that with 5 indictments and ALL of them have flipped, hundreds of court filed indictments, firing Mueller or slowing things down now is too late to stop the investigation. The states can pick up where Mueller left off. Resident is too busy saving his “get-of-jail” protector Kavanhaugh before he can focus on Mueller. If Kavanhaugh withdraws his nomination then I see Resident pulling the trigger on Sessions and watching the whole domino affect.

Sometime next year Tiger Woods will surpass Sam Snead who has 82 pga tour wins. I was in total bliss yesterday and half the night, Tiger Woods and Magic Johnson are my all-time favorite athletes. This morning I was glued to the Golf Channel and ESPN, I’m so happy Tiger won. I’ve followed him for his entire career the ups and downs. Today is great day to be a Tiger Woods fan.

I was glad to see him back too, Don – and I’m sure the advertisers were as well! I only watch golf when Tiger’s ‘in the hunt’.

  74. September 24, 2018 at 12:29 pm

“In press elections only about half of eligible voters vote….midterms even lower,…now one in five are not even registered to vote. I ask myself what is going on…not because they don’t care…especially when things go wrong we care….not that we don’t have opinions….we all have opinions right? every parents has opinions on their child’s school, want them to be safe….economy…taxes…still millions who think voting still not relevant…rigged…overwhelmed…pollitics too ugly….or busy just trying to get my kids to day care…I get being busy believe me I am frustrated too. I am sick of all the chaos and the nastiness of our politics, it’s exhausting…so I understand trying to shut it all out…but here’s the problem while some…are staying home trust me others are showing up…voting in every election…they know the impact that leaders impact…every part of our lives…school board members…mayors…can fix roads or not…to whether we go to war. This November across America ….will be voting initiatives…on vets, renewable energy, people who show up will decide…not many of you would want somebody who is not you…grandma’s choices are not necessarily the ones you would make…and you want go to some stranger in the street, doesn’t understand your community…expect them to take care of yours stuff?…when you don’t vote you’re ….you’re saying YOU do it…and you may not like what they decide…living with the consequences of other people’s decisions….people hoping you will…making it harder to vote…ask yourself in this democracy why would anyone want to make it harder to participate?..closing down polling places…hoping you’ll just give up…think voting is just too hard….you can see how those tactics make people think “this is too hard for me”. We all know someone who think that way. And that’s why we’re here today. Help tell the truth about voting and the truth is that registering is not hard…just takes a few minutes…and you can vote by mail…I do it from my house in my jeans! Just drop it in the mail and it is just that easy….average time at polling place is 11 minutes. Voting does not require any special expertise…you need to be a citizen, have opinions, caring about your kids future qualified you to be a citizen..a voter. Don’t let anyone intimidate…I’ve been voting since I was 18…you do have opinions and that qualifies you to vote and it is not that hard…people of all ages registering to vote..so those young people know they want to have a say and they know it is time for a change…Boom Country MO…struggling to get services for their kids…came together…now they have counseling, mental health, folks in that one county could have just sat back…they realized that the only way to make change is to get out and VOTE…things happen….and the same thing can happen on every issue in this country…but only if we use that vote…what if every eligible American stood up?..found one issue that we care about…what can actually happen when we all vote….all the things we’ve been wishing and hoping for…leaders who want the best for all of our families not just a handful but all of us. That’s how Democracy works here in America. Text WE ALL VOTE to 9779. Stamp will be prepaid! We want you to go out there and find other people. I am here asking for this…here’s what we have to do. if we want qualified people that we trust then people have to vote because you can’t vote some of the time and then sit out…But we had a great President! But every couple of years people got out…but democracy doesn’t work like that…it moves on….people who stay out don’t get a say and I want every America to feel the power of that choice…we all have that responsibility…I wonder what will it take for people to decide it is worth it? I want to see what this country can do when they know what their power is…is not about the leader…the power of our democracy is in us. The person you are looking for is standing in your shoes. You all have your marching orders. I love you. I know you are going to get this done. There is a limit of time to get this done.”

    Ben Folds and Rod Rosenstein.
You boys are Christians, right? What would Jesus do?
Would he bury crimes and carry water like a stooge?
Or smear a family man in case he tells the truth
About the boss, yeah, what would Jesus do?

Would he call him Mister Peepers?
Send some thugs to smash his glasses?
    The institution’s standing tall
Though we tried our best to trash it
    Aren’t we all the keepers
    Of this fragile young Republic?
And when all those Mister Peepers people fall…
    Lord help us all

Yes. They’d better not be trying to pull the “she’s suffered enough” crap. She’s a home invader and a murderer and needs to do time.

The officer will most likely appeal through their union. She was supposed to take a test to see what was in her system, drugs, Alcohol, etc., I am wondering if she planted the drugs in that apartment. She had plenty of time. He just did not sound like the type of guy who smoked drugs.
