      I hear mention of Barack Obama’s legacy and though I share the absolute love of PBO and everything he stands for I am not really ready to relegate him to the past. When he spoke at John McCain’s funeral of all the speakers over both funerals it was as if he was in his rightful place leading us again. I could not get over how “past president” just didn’t seem to apply. Even out of office he is truly our forever president, kind of like a Nelson Mandela to us.

          The GOP under Trump stirs up resentment and a sense of victimhood in their base thinking that will ward off the growing disdain that the country as a whole feels toward them. Add in lack of representation because of dirty tricks .People not being heard will find a way to make themselves visible. PBO listened and understood that was his responsibility. He was president of us all even those that despised him. He was without malice and would never single out political enemies and attempt to harm them in revenge.

    an exerp from the piece

    The Roberts Court is poised to shape American society in Trump’s image for decades to come. All three branches of the federal government are now committed to the Trump agenda: the restoration of America’s traditional racial, religious, and gender hierarchies; the enrichment of party patrons; the unencumbered pursuit of corporate profit; the impoverishment and disenfranchisement of the rival party’s constituencies; and the protection of the president and his allies from prosecution by any means available. Not since the end of Reconstruction has the U.S. government been so firmly committed to a single, coherent program uniting a politics of ethnonationalism with unfettered corporate power. As with Redemption, as the end of Reconstruction is known, the consequences could last for generations.

      I can’t accept that they will be successful. If we were able to elect President Obama, we will be able to stop this. What made 100 years possible is the ability to keep people in the dark. With the advent of social media, I don’t think this is possible anymore, so I chose to believe they will not get away with it.

    I cannot let today end without noting that I will NEVER, forget the image of condoleezza rice seated there behind that kavanaugh, smiling in support of a nominee who she knows is going to :

    (a) strip away the rights of racial and religious minorities and women;

    (b) undo the progress on disability rights;

    (c) reverse women’s rights and environmental protections;

    (d) continue to push the superiority of corporations over people;

    (e) protect the corrupt and evil president and make him to be above the law;

    (f) wholly side with the destruction of democracy and the rampart corruption;

    I have always wondered WHY people do not really scrutinize her and her actions as much as they would other people in her position.

    In a way, people routinely hide their heads in the sand about rice as they do about susan collins — their evil actions are ignored and instead they are not subject to genuine criticism …. I was done with the two a long time ago

        Condoleeza always lets them trot her out as their token Black person, but she was disinvited from the cookout years ago. We do not hear her nor are we impressed by her. She had the chance to come home when Barack ran and won, but she hugged her chains and put herself on the wrong side of history and we will not forget. During the campaign she was asked which of PBO’s foreign policy initiatives etc. that she had issue with and she could not come up with one. They trotted her out on the stage of the RNC and she performed like a house Negro. So no, Black folk took a pass on her years ago. We know what she is really all about.

    if you believe that in the long-run good overtakes evil, then you have to hang on to a belief that a time will come when there is an intervention from the Heavens …. and that intervention will be to neutralize the court-packing that these evil republicans have done .. at least I live in hope that goodness will prevail

    The name not mentioned in the Woodward book. VP Pence. Why is that.
    Also. Who are the people removing papers from Trump’s desk. Who is it making these decisions. Meanwhile the GOP Congress and their donors are on a mission to return to the yester year when only white wealthy men had rights. This breakdown of democracy has been coming. We are almost at the precipice.

      Good morning, TOD folks. Difficult few days for our family. Those of us friends on Facebook already know this. My husband’s 55 yr. old nephew passed away Saturday–cancer. CANCER SUCKS!!!! He had truly been LIVING with cancer for three years. It returned with a vengeance mid August. Thankful he didn’t suffer for weeks and/or months, but………It’s so difficult. He was a great guy and left a wonderful legacy. His service was last night in northeast TN. We got home at 11:30 and I didn’t sleep much, but am up and headed to the Y. Haven’t been in almost two weeks.

      Have a good day. I remain eternally grateful for this place. Thanks a million to Chips (MISS YOU!) and NW for keeping the door open.

      Isn’t a shame people can claim someone was not born in this country, make false claims about investigations about a sitting President, make him provide his long form birth certificate, and campaign on lies about that sitting President and not get sued? The person who wants 1st amendment protection will be the first to get sued for libel. That includes the Fake news shows that he lies to and lies for him every night.

    Friends, I haven’t asked for help in a LONG time. Will confess I haven’t had time yet to research it myself but I will. Here’s what I need: Info regarding how raising minimum wage affects employment, people losing jobs, etc. My husband INSISTS that it happens EVERY TIME. I need data to show him. I remember that either somewhere in either WA or OR (I think Seattle ????) raised it a couple years ago and it did not affect employment and didn’t employment even go up? Anyone who can provide me with some links, would appreciate. I have two drs. appts this afternoon and two tomorrow. EEK……..death in the family and other things is keeping me going in circles. THANKS!

      TNmtgirl, I am so sorry for your loss and that you are going through.

      I will see if I can provide data on the rise in minimum wage and its affect on employment. I was listening to NPR yesterday morning and they were saying normally the rise of minimum wage also raises the wages in the middle income wages too. However we are in strange times and they were saying this time the middle income wages are not rising but it might be too early to tell. Lower wage earnings are see significant rises in wage.

    It’s not just that the special counsel looms large. Or that the country is bitterly divided over Mr. Trump’s leadership. Or even that his party might well lose the House to an opposition hellbent on his downfall.

    The dilemma — which he does not fully grasp — is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.

    That is why many Trump appointees have vowed to do what we can to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.

      Not buying it. Imo there’s some barely concealed b-s in the Quote above from nyti.
      Their rationale is also a strategy to exempt themselves from not calling Trump out so we can get rid of him and move on from this dark, destructive moment in history. “The bigger concern is not what Mr. Trump has done to the presidency but rather what we as a nation have allowed him to do to us. We have sunk low with him and allowed our discourse to be stripped of civility.”
      So once again — we the victims are somehow to blame for what the GOP architects have so very carefully orchestrated…
