Me also! Been stuck in RSA, event & town hall to maintain hope & sanity. Forget who it was on MSNBC earlier this week (guest on show) who actually pointed out PBO’S speech. Whole trip should’ve been widely covered on all local & cable. Country needs hope & sanity. Right now. But guess that would trump keeping people off keel, desperate, etc. 😢

The only good part is that even die-hard Republicans (like Max Boot) are coming out – in columns and elsewhere – saying they may not have agreed with the policies of PBO, but they never once thought he wasn’t capable of leading our country. Like the current mess who went to his golf course again for the weekend, at our expense. Ugh.

          greetings boomer….

i know that the some in the media said that Pres Obama speech was directed towards Trump but i read this editorial re South Africa…and this was also directed toward what is happening in SA….

PS…MAX Boot does not get a pass from me…his article was filled with what my nana called backhanded compliments….slapping President Obama while pretending to praise him…

Thanks – I’ll read that editorial! (I don’t even really know who Max Boot is – it alternately makes me laugh when they now “praise” President Obama, when prior to this they had “other convictions.” Hopefully trump will be gone soon, and we’ll call them out when they begin to go after President Obama again.)

I think any GOP run state does not want fair and legal elections in fear of losing their own jobs and control over the state. Otherwise why are they always cutting voting hours, requiring harder to get voter IDs, gerrymandering borders, cutting voter rolls, cutting voter hours to discourage turnout, intimidating voter turnout, and sending out false information involving place, dates and hours of elections? It is not that much of a leap to encourage a foreign country to intrude in our election to their own advantage. It seems a lot of the GOP party is complicit in this endeavor. I am afraid for our future.

Can someone get hauled in already? Someone with enough impact to slow that asshole McConnell from trying to shove this illegitimate nominee through?

          • July 21, 2018 at 1:22 am

Can you believe reported today “McConnell threatening Democrats” to hurry with the Kavanaugh hearing…after blocking PBO’s nominee for a year…and btw saying that if elected Hillary would get the same treatment…so the McConnell Rule where is it now?

            • 18 Sandy1110
              July 22, 2018 at 12:38 am

That’s exactly the type of thing the hypocritical scumbag would do, and can do because he believes he IS the law. If a couple of those Republicans had the spine to caucus with the Democrats, they way Tim Scott opposed one of the nominees, they could get him out of the way. It’s ridiculous that one jerk can decide what the Senate does.

    • July 21, 2018 at 8:46 am

They are indeed worried about Tracey Abrams and the Lucy McBath and the other blk women running in GA….the GOP has to always cheat…because they cannot win a fair election….so they do not want to take a chance, so they will rig the results because it is about keeping and maintaining power at the expense of democracy….this is part of the battle we face…each of us should contact their SoS…to find out what they are doing to safeguard our state’s elections…what kind of security apparatus is in place…what kind of verification process is being used….

  6. July 21, 2018 at 8:38 am

This is my comment re: Malcolm Nance talking about the “deplorables”…being a national security risk…

  7. July 21, 2018 at 8:53 am

IN FACT the McConnell Rule is law.
“As every lawyer knows, not all laws are statutes. Many laws come in different forms: court decisions, agency rules, general principles, customary practices and sometimes even widely accepted opinions by legal experts. Like these non-statutory propositions, parliamentary rules announced by Senate majority leaders constitute laws as well. As a result, they are binding on future legislators unless and until they are explicitly overturned.”

    • July 21, 2018 at 8:54 am

“If McConnell still were to maintain that the McConnell Rule is not law, then the so-called Biden Rule was not law either. But if the Biden Rule was not law, then McConnell’s claim on March 16, 2016, to be bound by it — “The Senate will continue to observe the Biden Rule so that the American people have a voice in this momentous decision” — was a lie so monumental that the entire process by which Justice Neil Gorsuch ascended to the high court would have to be deemed constitutionally invalid and, therefore, subject to retraction.”

    • July 21, 2018 at 8:55 am

“McConnell’s only real option, then, is to concede that the McConnell Rule is law and then argue, as he did on June 28, that it applies only to “constitutionally lame-duck” presidents.”
(Why this argument will Not fly: thehill.com/…/395696-the-mcconnell-rule-is-law-and-senate-democrats-should-sue-to..)

    • July 21, 2018 at 8:57 am

“So when McConnell officially schedules confirmation hearings for Trump’s nominee, Senate Democrats need to do more than complain. They need to take him to court. And the court needs to tell McConnell, at long last, that his power extends only to facilitating the Senate’s advice and consent role, not to forcibly converting the judiciary into a mere extension of the Republican Party.”

  8. July 21, 2018 at 8:54 am

  9. July 21, 2018 at 9:14 am

Dems in Congress: McConnell doesn’t have a legal leg to stand on and should be sued or back off. Why should he be allowed to enforce his agenda illegally a 2nd time upon us, this time via a President who is under investigation and whose election was compromised by a hostile nation?
Not A Lame Duck: “President Obama was not a lame duck when McConnell announced the McConnell Rule in mid-February 2016.
On the contrary, he had 11 months remaining in his term, which is nine more than what is normally considered to be a lame-duck period.”
McConnell’s arguments do not hold up. GOP hopes that Democrats will feel extremely let down and have one more reason not to vote if
Schumer, Booker et al allow themselves to be steam-rollered by McConnell yet again, and for no reason.

Kenny Roger’s The Gambler lyrics: (imagine James Bond advising a sloppy AF Russian spy…)

On a warm summer’s evenin’ on a train bound for nowhere
I met up with a gambler, we were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns a starin’ out the window at the darkness
‘Til boredom overtook us and he began to speak

He said, “Son, I’ve made a life, out of readin’ people’s faces
And knowin’ what their cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey I’ll give you some advice”

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet and his face lost all expression
Said, “If you’re gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right”

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealing’s done

Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep
Cause every hand’s a winner and every hand’s a loser
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep

Thinking a lot about the events of the past two years and the past week. My take…..if Hillary had been elected, none of this would have come to light. The republicans would have continued to sabotage her and our country, all under the cover of superpatriotism and darkness. This is so traumatic for us, and I too wonder if we can recover, but I keep thinking what Justice Brandeis said “Sunlight is the best antiseptic…..or disinfectant” can’t remember which. In order for this to be killed, it had to swim to the top…….and rump is now at the top. McConnell is in this up to his forehead, and so is Ryan and so is Pence. And how many other Republican senators sold their souls for campaign funds and rigged elections. Russia has wanted to dominate and control the world since the days of the tsars, and they have not changed in that desire. Putin is just the latest incarnation of that drive, and very dangerous, more so because he looks and acts so western…….he even has a better tailor than rump.

i really like this #ForThePeople message rolled out by the DEMS…(and of course it did not get any press coverage)…….with its emphasis…on health care…increasing wages and the corruption of the GOP…

the struggle for health care galvanized the American people…as will the struggle for better wages…esp because of the bogus tax cuts and the tariffs which are decimating workers in the midwest…

.some folks have said that the message is boring…or what about other issues….

re: the corruption of the GOP …this is an umbrella that allows us to address so many actions that the GOP and this Administration is engaged in…it gives democrats opportunities to talk about an equitable Immigration policy…fixing the VRA…getting rid of the Muslim ban……Congress is a co-equal branch of the government…they are not helpless…i do not recommend running on Impeachment….however…reining in the excesses of the President…stopping his appointment of judges….are winners with the 69% of the American people who are not Trump’s supporters…the folks whom the press does not give the time of day to…

But we have to organize….register….. and vote

    • July 22, 2018 at 8:29 am

i do not want to run a candidate specifically to appeal to the same white voters who voted for Trump…they need to shore up their base…The Obama Coalition….and to register new voters…and bring out the vote…..

I’m with you. Aside from the countless young people in sexual slavery here, have met young girls (all were German) who take care of wealthy couples’ children for weeks on end while the parents go on vacation. Very little pay and no breaks, essentially in return for room and board. This is slavery of a certain kind. Slavery is on the rise in this country and it happens behind the, behind the, behind the closed doors, in private only accidentally revealed. imo slavery for the wealthy is very much in our future.
-And imo Trump is no stranger to the various aspects of the Human Trafficking business.

Good Morning all. It’s my birthday today and I’m reminded of the passage of time. As I get older, I realize with aging comes some wisdom and the learning of mindfulness. I went with some fellow ObamaDiary girls GGail & PurpleshoesLA to the Hollywood Bowl, and as I was sitting there appreciating the experience, I realized how important this blog has become in my life. I’ve met some amazing women, not just the two previously mentioned, but jojocat & Tally too. We’ve forged a friendship that is very important to me and I so appreciate them all. I also want to thank Chips for starting this blog after bwd had to stop hers, and for NerdyWonka who now keeps us going and I want to thank the rest of you wonderful people who post so many awesome things everyday. I have learned so much from you all and even though I don’t post that much myself, I do read and learn from you all. I wish everyone of you a wonderful day today.
