“When they go low, we go high.” FLOTUS Michelle Obama.
I think Amy Sherald captured the essence of our forever First Lady in this portrait. Thank you so much, Nerdy, for sharing these portraits of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama with us. Thank you also for all your hard work in keeping the Obamadairy.com such a special place.
the artist explains that each of the flowers is drawn from a place where Obama lived – Chicago, Hawaii, Kenya, and so the vision was "charting his path through earth through those plants" and challenging between the man and the story "who gets to be the star of the show" https://t.co/2WxgbdTZMx
These portraits will definitely evoke conversation. I love it. This is who Barack and Michelle are. I love the explanations both Amy and Kehinde give. What emotional morning.
I love both portraits, the contrast between Barack’s colorful image and Michelle’s black and white and grey is amazing. I think both artist captured Barack and Michelle’s image perfectly.
I was back and forth trying to find a version that had sound. Wound up on YouTube, but still was not the best and I missed the opening part of Michelle’s speech. Hope there is a cleaner version somewhere. I love both portraits and was happy to see my guess about the significance of the foliage in PBO’s portrait was correct. PBO was so funny and so much himself in his remarks (even though he wound up wearing a tie and buttoned up for the first time in months); such a joy and a comfort to see him. Looks like Michelle has a bit of a cold, but as gorgeous as ever. She even did her mom thing of reminding Khinde (?) to thank his mom. It was so touching to hear and see him do so that I started crying too. What a wonderful way to start the week: a double dose of Obama goodness to give us joy and strength for the fight to reclaim what they have given us.
I wish I could be at the reception that followed more than anything; just in a corner somewhere observing and soaking up the atmosphere of being around them and a room full of smart, kind, creative people who have loved supported and worked with our Forever POTUS and FLOTUS.
I just love the fact from now to the end of time when people go to see portraits of Presidents and first ladies they will stop and take notice of Barack and Michelle. Like Michelle said “girls and especially black girls will see someone that looks like them.”
Definitely a match made in heaven, Nerdy Wonka. I don’t care what the right wing and left wing hypocrites say, the Obamas showed the world what real love, grounded in mutual respect, looks like.
President Obama, the consummate gardner who tended our soil with a love and a fierceness this world has never seen, projects profound wisdom and the depth of his soul. I love every brushstroke. #ObamaPortraitspic.twitter.com/RVSuC96Cr2
Don't let the soft muted palette fool you. The full range of her identity is there: strength, beauty, calm, resolve, inquisitive and self-assured. I love that her shoulders are bare in a flowing frock of patchwork Americana. #ObamaPortraitspic.twitter.com/8BOn2RUr8D
There is symbolism in the positioning of the flowers that represent the places that molded his character and his life. And look how the green leaves are embracing him all over (the millions that he has touched, the life given to so many through his example and more.).
YES!!!! I think his expression captures his probing nature. I love that he’s enveloped in a gorgeous and bountiful garden, that he’s leaning forward without a tie.
“I am in awe of Kehinde’s gifts and what he and Amy have given to this country and the world. We are both very grateful to be subject of their attention for this brief moment.” — President @BarackObama#ObamaPortraits#myNPGpic.twitter.com/xGBYYbDDOG
I LOVED how Mr. Wiley described this! It shook me!
Kehinde Wiley describing his #PresidentialPortrait of @BarackObama, the interplay btwn the man himself & the plants representing places in his personal story: “Who gets to be the star of the show – the story or the man who inhabits that story?” Wow! pic.twitter.com/zcdL8AWytF
It is rather unusual for visual artist to be so eloquent and so able to explain what they do and their visions in such clear terms. Was very impressed with their remarks. This whole thing, including the significance of the unveilings being done during Black History Month, has me giddy with joy and full of gratitude and pride.
I was Dean of Students at a very good art school and let me tell you one of the hardest jobs was trying to impress upon the artists how important it is to be able to talk about your work. If you don’t do it, others will.
Neither image is complacent or complicit. Coiled energy, some pushback, some wariness, some availability. Both hugely imaginative (v. the standard "president of some college or other standing in the library.") Nobody liked JFK's, but over the years, it's carried his true spirit. https://t.co/RBXr672NVt
Portraits of President Barack Obama and Former First Lady Michelle Obama will be unveiled on Monday at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The Obamas selected artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald to paint the portraits, respectively. pic.twitter.com/yKRcdaPXMx

Amy Sherald’s incredible portrait of @MichelleObama. Sherald uses greyscale to paint skin tone in order to take away “color,” so her subjects can be seen for their personality and presence. pic.twitter.com/mLiLZSlNEU
And Amy Sherald has OUR Michelle looking so divinely royal in garb others wouldn’t deem so.
This is a reenvisioning of excellence for black girls everywhere-for everyone of us, and every one who couldn’t understand us. pic.twitter.com/Zmnq7pO7LK
Okay he didn’t “live” in Kenya, but the point remains – he has roots there that shaped him and he visited.
the artist explains that each of the flowers is drawn from a place where Obama lived – Chicago, Hawaii, Kenya, and so the vision was "charting his path through earth through those plants" and challenging between the man and the story "who gets to be the star of the show" https://t.co/2WxgbdTZMx
This is what struck me the most. It so perfectly depicts the man (notice also, he’s not wearing a tie) and the weight of history that surrounds him. It’s brilliant! #obamaportrait#myNPG#KehindeWiley
Monday morning joy as portraits of President and First Lady Obama are revealed by artists Amy Sherald and Kehinde Wiley. Reminds me to hope. #ObamaPortraitspic.twitter.com/6r4NtH0rxx

Let us work hard not to join in their hate. Let us work to pray Light will shine into their darkened, soulless existence, thus using our strength and unity to lift them up. Even as they try to drive us down. This is my own greatest challenge of these days, but in my heart I know Light and kindness will prevail ~ we have had, and still have, two shining, sterling examples clearing the path ahead, so we may follow.
Thank you, TOD. Bless you each and everyone. Big hugs all around. ❤️
That’s the thing about art, its open for interpretation. I felt one way about Michelle’s portrait when I saw it on t.v., but when I saw it online. It appealed to me on a different level, a deeper level. Michelle’s portrait exudes power and grace, Barack’s portrait exudes intelligence and calmness. And I suspect later on I’ll probably have a different view of both portraits, and that’s okay.
I love how Kehinde Riley's portrait emphasizes President Obama's hands. It reminds me of Douglas Chandor's portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt (which hangs in the East Wing). In both pieces the foregrounded hands embody the subject's expressiveness, intelligence, & humanity. pic.twitter.com/SqsY8yoInC
Kehinde Wiley said the garden fights for attention as if to ask what is more important— the story or the man inhabiting the story? His speech was a brilliant mini-lecture. #myNPGhttps://t.co/51W5Si68nYpic.twitter.com/UarIqcwrVF
LOVED that! The weight of history is almost overtaking him, but he prevails, cool as a cucumber. Isn’t that totally him? Also as @AskingAmy mentioned, he’s sitting in front of The Bushes. 😆This piece is brilliant!
Must-read @CharlesMBlow: "Conservatives are using every possible means to permanently lock in power, wealth and influence for the existing, predominantly white and predominantly male power structure" https://t.co/gVFtrQOKB1pic.twitter.com/BbyfAConPp
I do not know if it has always been their plan…but it is now….We democrats must go on the offensive…The GOP and the dark forces that they represent will never stop trying to enslave us…Just look at PA around the issue of gerrymandering….they are now making plans to impeach the Justices who voted against the gerrymandering……they will never give up the fight….we have to be just as diligent …for we are fighting to save our democracy..
Here at the National Portait Gallery this morning for the unveiling of @BarackObama and @MichelleObama's official portraits. Can't wait to see how Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald interpreted these pieces. pic.twitter.com/2CB67xDLfd
Amy Sherald didn't hold back, her signature gray pops off the portrait of @MichelleObama.
"I am overwhelmed," Mrs. Obama said of this moment. And a moment it is. The first African American First Lady was presented with her official portrait, painted by a black woman artist. pic.twitter.com/nLOFf4VRJG
Let me tell you what's so Black about this unveiling. Each of the artists are thanking their mothers for this moment. Talking about their sacrifice and support and how even when access to art wasn't readily available, these mothers made a way.
Today’s unveiling of both Barack and Michelle’s portraits stand in stark contrast to the current environment. Today we were treated to a brief respite from all the ills that have befallen our nation. Today is a beautiful day because once again we are shown what is possible when we fight for it.
Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald are the first black painters to receive a presidential portrait commission from the National Portrait Gallery. https://t.co/FkMchsprXz

Why the need to include the word “Anglo?” When you include the word Anglo you exclude everything that isn’t Anglo. I’m convinced that small penises permeate our government and to a larger extent our society.
Mrs. Obama emphasized an element of couturial spectacle, (with a dress designed by Michelle Smith) and rock-solid cool. -Amy Sherald pic.twitter.com/nR3o7WFPNJ
What a presentation! The portraits are so good, so perfect and so real.
The speeches by Michelle OBAMA and President OBAMA were delightful. I missed them so much.
The speeches by the artists were simply wonderful.
I thank God that he sent Barack and Michelle
to us.?Through their example we can all gain the courage to live better, to do better and to love more. Feeling kind of emotional just now.
Thanks for being here TOD.

Let me translate a thousand dumb tweets I've seen today:
"Those portraits weren't made for my aesthetic pleasure so therefore I'm gonna drag on them before I even consider who they were made for and that, once again, it's not always about me."
If white America is this triggered by a couple of paintings in the National Portrait Gallery on a Monday, by Friday #BlackPanther in every cineplex in the land is going to make some heads explode.
🎵Come gather 'round people Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you Is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'🎶
Breaking: Trump’s controversial pick to run 2020 Census has withdrawn from consideration. Thomas Brunell was GOP gerrymandering expert & author of “Redistricting and Representation: Why Competitive Elections are Bad for America." My story https://t.co/l0dJc7EOyX
The iconography of the Obamas has always been one of the most fascinating things about their public lives. Their deliberate and welcome assertions of blackness in privileged spaces continues here with striking portraits by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald. https://t.co/4G3TrgygiP
That these will hang in the National Portrait Gallery is one thing, exposing audiences likely to be predominantly white to conspicuous blackness. But I am most looking forward to seeing reprints framed in homes, taped to dormitory walls, and affixed to refrigerators by magnets. pic.twitter.com/LE9OLi0jk5
Something happened today that bothers me. Due to my lower income living on disability, my son has received Medicaid. He turned 18 in July although he’s still in HS (a senior). So because he turned 18 I assumed he couldn’t have Medicaid any longer & thus did not recertify him back in November. However, he suddenly became ill friday & really needs to see a doctor- so long story sorry- today I found out via Maryland Health Connections that he is still eligible since I support him. YAY for that. But today they asked me a question (and for proof) of something they have never asked before: Proof of his citizenship. I asked why, all of sudden? She couldn’t give me an answer… I asked if they have his race listed- she actually wouldn’t answer that question (he is black & I’m pretty sure that info is part of the questions I answered previously when first signing him up for Medicaid.
This is Maryland, supposedly progressive. Is this coming from the federal govt via Trump’s BS? I am so angry & offended by this. Thus I had to submit proof that he is an American citizen- for the first time since we moved to this state. I honestly felt fearful, I thought what if he wasn’t a citizen and sick like he is now, then what? Then is he just not worth receiving healthcare? Is this what we’re putting parents of non-citizen kids through? I hate this country right now. I’m honestly ashamed of this America. Right now I hate every single fool that voted for this filth and every Russian that participated in screwing over America. And Trump, I can’t even express my hatred for this trash.
Thanks JO’B – I cannot imagine the fear a mother would have to endure if she/ her child couldn’t prove citizenship & get healthcare. This is all so wrong.
I know that these kinds of things can be fearful and disconcerting…and yes…it might get worse before it gets better….but we still can win….i am making sure that i have as many documents as possible….including passport….(((huggs)))
After today, I’ve made a copy of my son’s birth certificate for both he & I to carry with us at all times. It is sickening, Sheila- I will try to remain hopeful as you are doing.
I was thinking my senate reps- as I do believe this comes from the feds, but state reps should know also. Just a thought, but I agree with you also on the ACLU.
So sorry and sad to read this, sherijr. As other’s have said, we will get through this. The ‘when’ is the question and also how much damage will be done and how long to repair that damage. 😦 😦 😦
Sending you both love, Dearest. Prayers for your son’s speedy recovery. Prayers for financial blessing. Prayers for strength and hope, for you and our nation.
Hello, Hello, Hello TODbots!
Wow! Wow! Wow!
I had no idea that today 12Feb17 was to be the unveiling of the Obamas Portraits in DC. Thanks, TODville Community! Thanks, NW!
Congrats, Linda on your Au ⭐
{{{ ❤ Chips ❤ }}}
❤ ❤ ❤ TODable TODville Village!
I don't believe there is such a thing as relationship goal. Everyone has to make the efforts to make their relationships work, provided the person you are in the relationship with is worth the trouble, but, Obama has no problem should his love and respect for his wife.👏🏾👌🏾 https://t.co/DBV4dP7ZfC
Well I know where I’m going to take the grandgirls this weekend. I’ll need to confirm that they will be on display but am so looking forward to seeing these in person.
DD4O, nice to see ya around these parts. How wonderful to be able to take them to see these beautiful portraits and a slice of history. You are not calling them grand babes anymore. They must be getting so big ❤ ❤ 🙂
If you can take of picture there take one with those darling granddaughters of yours with the portraits and show them to us. That’s what makes my heart sing, the thought of all those beautiful children taking in those portraits. So emotional.
President Obama’s portrait will be installed here – alongside his contemporary colleagues in @NPG’s America’s Presidents exhibit. The public can see it starting tomorrow. #myNPGpic.twitter.com/OOi8BF1xA6
A historic day—we are honored to have such amazing works of President @BarackObama and Mrs. @MichelleObama in our collection. Relive a highlight from the unveiling before seeing them in person starting tomorrow, Feb. 13 #myNPGpic.twitter.com/EeUfE5VeiC
Exclusive: Pres. Barack Obama’s official portraitist, Kehinde Wiley, tells me that the Obamas “are signalling to the rest of the world that it is okay to occupy skin that happens to look like this.” https://t.co/W54G31oy2v
We are lucky witnesses to history
This is such a monumental morning. What we are missing.
Okay guys give me your opinion of Michelle and Barack photo
They touch my soul.
It really does capture her essence. Strong. Smart. Beautiful. Rooted in her culture.
Love, love, love it!
PBO says Amy captured Michelle’s hottness. What a testimony.
mtmarilyn, I smile when he said that.
AMAZING!!!!
LOVELOVE> them both. Will admit I *may* like Michelle’s a tiny bit better. 🙂
I agree. It’s a stunning portrait.
LOVE both portraits!
Our POTUS44 and FLOTUS44. Love them.
Oh I Love both portraits!
Beautiful and well done
Both artists should be proud of their creations.
Agree! This is interesting:
WOW…WOW…WOW!!!!
I love that he is not wearing a tie in the portrait because he hates them. This shows who he is, not who or what someone thinks he should be.
This!!!
Or a flag pin, although it was on his lapel for today (lol)(he will never let them forget that ridiculous debate, rock on PBO!)

✊🏾
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that their paintings are going to POP OUT in that collection like METEORS.
I fell out when he said that Mrs. Robinson is the source of Michelle’s hotness!
😁
Definitely a match made in heaven, Nerdy Wonka. I don’t care what the right wing and left wing hypocrites say, the Obamas showed the world what real love, grounded in mutual respect, looks like.
I love them both. Entirely captivating. I love that the artist showed PBO’s beautiful, strong hands so well. His hands are magnificent.
True. I always notice his hands.
I LOVED how Mr. Wiley described this! It shook me!
Amen!

I hope that there will be smaller prints that we can buy.
Shouldn’t really rip off their work but this is a fun idea!!
I love that I can see both girls’ faces in Michelle’s.
Yep, I do too!
Dayum, girl! Those legs are amazing!
Video of the event:

The Smithsonian really screwed up their live feed but it still turned out to be a good video. Skip ahead to 6:50.
Thanks, Meta.
I like the camera view from CSPAN much better.
Missed it of course so thank you, Meta for this video 🙂
Note to self: please don’t let the forever-bitter O-haters spoil your mood … just enjoy the unveiled Obama portraits in peace
Tell it!
Okay he didn’t “live” in Kenya, but the point remains – he has roots there that shaped him and he visited.

Ok, waterworks! Damn.
OMG. This is so beautiful.
Oh, my! Love, love, love this and adore them
Had to use this! ❤️
So touching, you can feel the love 💕
Hasn’t that always been their plan?
Yep. From the day their unwashed ancestors washed up on these shores from the shit holes of England and Europe.

Can you imagine walking the halls of the gallery and going from painting to painting and then BOOM! Barack and Michelle.
I plan to do exactly that someday! Can’t wait!
