In her first major speech since leaving office, former first lady Michelle Obama made an impassioned argument for the importance of educators in communities across the country, saying the example they set is “what makes America great.” “Our counselors and educators have a far bigger impact on our kids’ lives than any president or first lady. … You all serve as living, breathing examples of the kind of people they should aspire to be,” she said, speaking at the School Counselor of the Year ceremony at the Kennedy Center, a collaboration between the American School Counselor Association and part of her Reach Higher initiative on higher education she spearheaded as first lady.
“And trust me, I know this work isn’t easy, especially right now. I know there’s a lot of anxiety out there. And there’s no denying that our kids, what they see on TV, the kind of behavior being modeled in public life — all of that, yes — impacts their behavior and their character,” Obama said. “But at times like this the work you are all doing is even more urgent. It’s even more critically important. See, you all have the power to teach our kids what it means to go high when others go low. You have that power.”

Hi there all. I really agree with Michelle Obama that as teachers, we have a huge influence on our students. Mine are 13/14 and I’m doing my best but sometimes when I see what’s happening to our institutions and our government, I am filled with sadness at what the future holds for them.

A 500-year-old secret code used in letters between one of Spain’s most famous monarchs and a military commander has been cracked.
The letters, constructed using more than 200 special characters, were deciphered by the country’s intelligence agency.
Ferdinand of Aragon’s letters have tantalised historians for centuries.
He was behind the final reconquest of Spain from the Moors in 1492 and Columbus’s journeys to the Americas.
The letters include instructions on strategy during military campaigns in Italy in the early 16th Century. They were written using secret code in case they fell into enemy hands.
The letters, on display at Spain’s Army Museum in Toledo, use “over 200 symbols”, curator Jesús Anson explained.
It took intelligence services almost half a year to decipher four of them, some of which went on for over 20 pages.
The code-cracking has been described by some as a “Rosetta Stone” moment, amid hopes that it could lead to more coded letters being deciphered.
