Derek Thompson: Thanks, Obama
President Obama has cultivated a reputation for approaching politics with a kind of medical clinicism. But with the full panorama of his presidency coming into view, Obama’s economic legacy is impressive, even historic. First, the centerpiece of Obama’s anti-inequality legacy is the policy that bears his name. Obamacare, a.k.a., the Affordable Care Act, has reduced the uninsured rate from about 16 percent in 2010 to less than 9 percent today, the lowest level in U.S. history. Second, several subtle yet significant tax changes under Obama have made the tax code more progressive. The stimulus bill passed in 2009, a.k.a., the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (or, simply, the Recovery Act), included the most important changes. The law created the Making Work Pay credit, expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, and created new tax credits, like the American Opportunity Tax Credit for college attendees. The most significant change to the tax code since 2010 has been the eleventh-hour agreement to extend the Bush tax cuts for all families except for an increase in the top tax rate for households making more than $450,000 and an increase in the estate tax rate to 40 percent.
Third, the Obama administration has supported initiatives outside of the tax code and health care policy to help the poor and middle class. They have been advocates for higher minimum wages at the national level, which have arguably buoyed the state-by-state effort to raise minimum wages toward $15 in richer areas. They supported extended unemployment benefits while long-term unemployment was perhaps the country’s most insidious economic plague. Unemployment insurance kept more than 11 million people out of poverty in Obama’s first term, according to Census analysis. The president also expanded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamps) and Temporary Aid to Needy Families (grants that states can use for a variety of measures including helping the poor). His Department of Education spent more than $60 billion to support states’ education budgets and prevent more layoffs of teachers and administrators. In sum, he grew anti-inequality spending more than any president, as a share of GDP. But at a time when both liberals and conservatives have become exquisitely aware of income inequality and its ills, the seemingly placid, cold, philosopher-in-chief did more to combat that inequity than any president in at least 50 years. For that, two words suffice: “Thanks, Obama.”

Wray threatened to quit over pressure to fire McCabe: Axios
Benjamin Wittes, MSNBC legal analyst, talks with Rachel Maddow about a new Axios report that FBI Director Wray stood up to pressure from A.G. Sessions to fire Deputy Director McCabe and threatened to quit over the matter.
Haitians of all creed were crushed by the despicable and vulgar comment of Trump who traveled to Miami, FL and made promises to them in Little Haiti. Delayed or calculated, it’s good that they, too, demonstrate against the vulgarity and over racism of the US President.

Now Comey? OK……it’s getting closer!
Does anyone know if these qualified people (including fired fed lawyers, career government workers, etc. etc. etc) can get their jobs back once the Orange Idiot is removed and democrats retake control of Congress & WH?
It will depend on who the next President is.
It will depend on if they even would want to come back.
It most certainly is possible for after this Dastard Chaos, some if not many of these Depts/Agencies would be depleted of experienced Personnel. We all know that to rebuild is Harder than to start from scratch.
Thank you for responding, Nena. It’s the depletion of experience that worries me and makes me wonder if ‘patriotism’ will be strong enough to draw previously serious, career gov workers back – assuming of course that the country gets serious leaders back in power.

Greitens won’t say whether he took a photo of woman with whom he’d had an affair
By Jack Suntrup
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
EFFERSON CITY • Gov. Eric Greitens on Monday sidestepped one question asked repeatedly during a rare news conference: Did he take a compromising photo of a woman with whom he had had an affair?
The question came in various forms from various news outlets. After initially addressing the affair, he attempted to steer the reporters back to the state’s $28.7 billion budget blueprint, the planned topic of the day.
The question stems from Greitens’ admission this month that he had an extramarital affair in 2015. A related allegation is that he took a compromising photograph of the woman and threatened its release if she spoke of their relations.
I’ve seen too many horrible movies and documentaries about the permanent solution WTF?
If we don’t act soon, our entire beautiful country’s gonna end up like one of his Atlantic City casinos.
Another hour of celebration coming, i can’t wait. Salivating already.
And Kelly will be replaced by someone just as awful or even worse. Kelly was Trump’s enabler. He did nothing to curb Trump’s troubling and dangerous tendencies. He stood by Trump when he made several racist comments, including defending Neo Nazis who marched and committed violence (and murder) in Charlottesville last Summer. If he’s out, great but I don’t see his ouster changing anything.
Looking forward to November when real change can be made via the election.
Don’t even want to read that, because it probably portends doom for Medicaid recipients.
He is leaving because his job of undermining Medicaid has been accomplished. These Trumpsters are some of the most heartless and evil people. It seems that their mission is to hurt, and may be to kill, poor people.
Sweet!
Time to plan a wedding so that PBO can officiate
This made me laugh ☺. Really cute.
I wish he was still the President and White House occupant.
Once Putin’s Puppet vacates the house, I suggest rebuilding it. God only knows what secret recording devices are hidden in every nook and cranny.
wonder how his wife feels about this
Yes. This MUST be done! I wish we could do it TODAY. Right now.
……that we thought we knew……
So what happens when a Republican candidate posts this type of anti-Semitic trash? Republicans are truly the party of White Supremacists and it’s terrifying that they are in control of this country.
Another junkyard dog.
(No offense to junkyard dogs.)
Her second child.
Wow!
Congratulation Sen. Duckworth.
I like how they wrote “No sitting senator has ever given birth,” as though she’s planning on giving birth on the Senate floor. Ha.
😂 good one.
And this.
40K jobs loss due to the Putin’s Puppet.
US is a shit hole under #45, the GOP majority and all of the thieves and morally depraved people who have been put in positions to do so much damage. Of course, most people who love freedom and common sense do not want to come here now.
I was wondering today, that surely the US must have suffered some form of loss in the tourism industry.
PP and his entire (?) Cabinet is going to Davos ???
I wonder if they are planning a defection to Russia 😂. Maybe the heat is getting to them. OK OK I can dream.
Slowly they Start to finally turn away?
One would hope.
They should stop airing that s%%% show everyday. They did not air PBO’s briefings everyday.
I think they should stop carrying the lying witch too. Bravo to MSNBC and CNN.
jacquelineoboomer, I agree with Susan100%.
I do, as well, bella!
I have this on a t shirt. Truth
Too funny. Mention Trudeau and you get 100+ “likes” on twitter in short order.
Now trump’s hitting up the political views of the FBI. Somebody needs to do a “Conjunction Junction” video for trump and pence on The Hatch Act and other regulations. And also especially before both visit military personnel again and do campaign rallies on military installations. Those should have been shut down before they started. When I worked for the Navy in public affairs, we also were given “election year guidance” from the Pentagon … you had to take special pains not to allow politicians running for re-election on the installation who would give anything that sounded like campaign rallies. Where I worked, we once were hosting an important event where a congressman was speaking, during an election year, and we got permission from the nearby university to hold it there so the military leaders could exit before he spoke, just in case he forgot the rules … I remember having their government car waiting outside the entrance to drag them away. These are things federal government employees and the military are fully versed on, and it’s too bad the so-called commander in chief hasn’t a clue and doesn’t care about what he doesn’t know.
Another Democrat wins!
twitter truth
It’s amazing that these same so-called Christians overlook that piece of orange sh#t unholy actions against GOD, women, children, but STILL support him no matter what! This goes to show you that these are not religious people but ordinary lobbyist for lining their pocket books. Time to get religion OUT OF POLITICS for good.
A mighty good read

The Unconscionable Claim that Medicaid Fueled the Opioid Crisis
by Nancy LeTourneau
January 23, 2018
Republicans like to talk about the need to “reform” Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. But most of us know that their real desire is to either kill these programs or so damage them that they can effectively be drowned in the bathtub (as Grover Norquist would put it). House Speaker Paul Ryan said the quiet part out loud when he suggested that he had dreamed about slashing Medicaid spending since his kegger days in college.
While we’ve all be talking about shithole countries and government shutdowns, the Republicans have launched what might be their most malicious attack yet on Medicaid. The country is facing a severe opioid crisis, and they are actually trying to blame it on Medicaid. Here is the conclusion Sam Adolfsen reaches at the National Review:
Claims like that led Republican Senator Ron Johnson to issue a report, write an op-ed and hold a hearing focused on blaming Medicaid for fueling the opioid epidemic.
So sweet.

Well done, Oregon voters!

Serena Williams has called for American tennis player Tennys Sandgren to apologise for his controversial tweets.
The world number 97 deleted 18 months’ worth of tweets after being questioned about his beliefs and denied he was a far-right sympathiser.
Following his Australian Open quarter-final on Wednesday, he accused the media of “demonising” and “propaganda”.
“There is an entire group of people that deserves an apology,” said Williams in a tweet to Sandgren.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner added: “I can’t look at my daughter and tell her I sat back and was quiet. No! she will know how to stand up for herself and others – through my example.”
