If they don't allow a vote on DACA, then Dems can refuse to vote for the budget again. That's why the next three weeks will determine how this turns out. Today was not the end, and CHIP has been taken off the table, a pretty big deal by itself.
To be clear, the goal – the demand – is not “to get a vote” but to give 800,000 of our brothers and sisters the DREAM. This deal & Dems who support it will be judged by whether it produces that result next month, not whether McConnnell gives them a vote so House can own the blame
Democrats have to push back against the notion that by supporting DACA, they are supporting criminal migrants. This is not true. If you commit a crime, you cannot be a DREAMER. That’s the law. Dems need to be much more aggressive about pushing back when Republicans lie about this issue and therefore stop Republicans from framing DACA as a “Dems love criminals” issue.
Interesting day in Washington, D.C. Let’s see what happens in February. At least, CHIP is safe for the next 6 years. I am not that optimistic that DACA is passed by the House in February but we’ll have to see. Anything is possible and Democrats have time to frame the argument and push Republicans on DACA which is heavily supported by the American people.

I yield to nobody in my desire to see Dems stand up to Trump. But I really, really don't understand the notion that they somehow just caved in. They took CHIP off the table; they got an agreement to hold a vote on DACA, and failing to honor that agreement will be bad for Rs 1/
I am glad to see Paul Krugman finally recognizing political reality. I remember him leading the charge that “Obama caved” with regard to the 2009 stimulus bill and the 2010 ACA bill.
A huge loss for the Republicans: the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ordered a new congressional map in one of the country's most gerrymandered states. It's a state case, so SCOTUS appeal is unlikely. It's likely to cost the GOP a seat, and undermine their position in others
This is not the deal I would have taken, but this isn’t the end either. McConnell keeps his word or we are right back at it in a few weeks. So don’t panic and let’s get back to work pressuring GOPers (and Dems) to save the Dreamers.

This thread is sad, painful, but true and worth a read.
If you want @TheDemocrats to have power, then VOTE THEM INTO POWER.
EVERYTHING that's playing out was predictable (and was predicted by me and others) when Trump was put in office and the GOP gained the majority in BOTH houses of Congress on 11/9/2016.
The ONLY reasons that far WORSE has not happened and that what has happened has taken this long?
YOUR resistance, the Democratic lawmakers ceaseless efforts to minimize and contain loss, and the choices by many in the judicial branch to uphold the rule of law.
It’s beyond maddening that the extreme left seems to be as ignorant in their way as the far right.
Everyone on the left needs to read and take this seriously.
I think there are some people who don’t want to acknowledge the reality that this is what the Trump administration really wants…or to deal with that happening.
Otherwise, I can’t think of why they still think they have room to nip at Democrats’ heels when the GOP poses a life-and-death threat to American people and ideals. It’s scary to write that.
Well said Sandy. In my humble opinion, I think the “extreme left” ( the people I call “holier than thou purity progressives”) is partly to blame for the election of Donald Trump. In 2016, many of the “holier than thou purity progressives” voted for either Stein or Johnson, or did did not vote at all. It’s as if they learned nothing from the 2000 election debacle, when many of them voted for Nader because, as they so loudly proclaimed, there was no difference between Goerge W. Bush and Al Gore. I just can’t tell you how sick I am of them trying to take over the Democratic Party, pretending to be the base of the Party, despite the fact that they’ve repeatedly abandoned the Democratic Party to vote for fringe third party candidates.
These “holier than thou purity progressives” are once agiain out there loudly proclaiming that the “Democrats caved” for a negotiating a deal to reopen the government, which saved millions of children from losing health insurance, prevented hundreds of thousands of federal government workers, including those in the military, from being furloughed, Look, I too I am unhappy that the deal didn’t guarantee protection for the Dreamers. But it’s not as if the Democrats in Congress totally abandoned the fight to protect the Dreamers. Instead of berating and demonizing Democratic members of Congress who have been fighting so hard to protect the Dreamers,, why are the supposedly “Democratic base” pledging to keep up the fight to protect the Dreamers? As disappointed as I am about Congress’ failure to protect the Dreamers, I am still going to do whatever it takes to support the Democratic Party and Democratic members of Congress because they are the ones still fighting hard to protect the Dreamers. The “holier than thou purity progressives” now attacking the Democrats are all talk. And as my wise grandmother was fond of saying: “Talk Is Cheap.” Attacking and demonizing Democratic members of Congress will not ensure protection for the Dreamers. Instead, such attacks are more likely to promote disunity, thus weakening the Party resistance to Trump and the GOP.

Checking in with this story. Remember I posted that we had 14,000 marchers yesterday. Well today, a number of people (say Republicans in this very red town) began questioning rather harshly the police dept. about that number, calling it fake news. So, one of the local TV stations covered the story. Interviewed the police to get an explanation. Here’s what the police said: We used a counter at the check in point and got 9000. We know there were around 5000 in the 10 block long line that never got in the area for the rally. Police spokesperson went on to give numbers from other marches or events. CR’s allow the GOP to continue to kick issues down the road with no real commitment for bi-partisan solutions and no real consequences for their inaction.
Honestly, I believe that even though majority public opinion favors DREAMERS, and they think that Congress needs to do something to stabilize their status and give DREAMERS a path to citizenship, the average person is not willing to make the sacrifices that a long-term government shutdown would bring, especially when it negatively impacts their finances … particularly those that pretty much live pay-check to pay-check. (The chronic reckless actions of Congress is part of the reason so many allowed themselves to hope that voting for the “great negotiator” would bring a positive change to D.C.) A lengthy government shutdown would start to have a domino effect, maybe even deteriorating the positive sentiment towards DREAMERS.
Democrats need to take control of the narrative. The GOP has control of the bully pulpit. They also have the reinforcement of the MSM who seems to thrive on dramatizing the narrative at the expense of Democrats. Those who are giving Democrats a positive spin on voting to re-open the government – i.e., CHIPS, also question whether Democrats have a plan if McConnell and company do not follow through on their commitment. IS there plan other than forcing another government shutdown???
Democrats also need to consider the HOUSE in their Plan B. Even if the Senate follows through on their commitment and a bi-partisan DACA bill is brought to the floor for a vote – AND APPOVED, the House has already indicated that they are not bound by what the Senate does. They are in a position that they don’t NEED Democratic support to pass their partisan bills. They don’t even bring bills to the floor for a vote that could easily garner numerous Democratic votes. They want to maintain the perception that Democrats do not want to cooperate. We know that in the GOP’s eyes, “cooperation” just means signing on to what they present.
Paul Ryan is able to hide behind the GOP House majority and in the shadows of the Senate. How can he and House majority leaders be forced to bring a bi-partisan bill to the floor for a vote; a bill that would get both GOP and Democratic votes; a bill that would pass? How can the WH’s (45, Pres. Miller/Kelly) influence be diminished?
And how do you get *all* factions of the Democratic party to stop the woulda/shoulda/coulda’s and come together (put their presidential ambitions on hold for a minute) to strategize how to make this work, despite their minority status? How do they find the loopholes in procedures without putting their advantage at risk once they re-gain the majority? How do they learn to make use of the MSM, Social Media, etc., to get their message out and not be overshadowed by GOP messaging?

No, I didn’t feel the earthquake but was awakened at 3am with a text alert from SF Emergency Services about a tsunami warning. Needless to say, that was a real wake up call. About an hour later, we were advised to stand by if we live within immediate range of the Pacific or within 5 blocks of the Bay. I live 8 blocks from the water. I live on a steep hill but I was very alarmed nonetheless and began packing a bag as advised by all media. Thankfully, the warning was lifted a couple of hours later.
I am surprised that Presidents Miller and Kelly / slime ball Sessions are merely just wanting a wall, with their actions one might think that they’d be wanting to build a chamber of some kind.

Well, there you have it.
Oh my God.
I can honestly say I hate ICE. Hate them.
Meta, did you feel the earthquake in CA this morning?
No, I didn’t feel the earthquake but was awakened at 3am with a text alert from SF Emergency Services about a tsunami warning. Needless to say, that was a real wake up call. About an hour later, we were advised to stand by if we live within immediate range of the Pacific or within 5 blocks of the Bay. I live 8 blocks from the water. I live on a steep hill but I was very alarmed nonetheless and began packing a bag as advised by all media. Thankfully, the warning was lifted a couple of hours later.
Yes that is completely terrifying, what a horrible start to your day, meta, so sorry.
Thank you, sherijr!
Wait I didn’t phrase that right: I know it was in Alaska, wondering if you felt it in CA 😉
Nope, probably Oregon or WA State felt it.
Thanks jo-jo.
I am surprised that Presidents Miller and Kelly / slime ball Sessions are merely just wanting a wall, with their actions one might think that they’d be wanting to build a chamber of some kind.
I hope the loony left is satisfied with the current regime … cuz you know HRC was the devil.
These people truly make me want to scream. They are sub-human racists idiots.
so now they seek to charge American citizens for giving aid to undocumented Immigrants….Questions ..Will Americans take to the street to stop the #Gestapo tactics of ICE agents
BFD
A big push for this over the past year.
Oh, it’s on.
This was Sessions’ chance to “recall” something, give it up, and get himself somewhat off the hot seat. Wonder how he did.
I know DAMNED WELL he recalled EVERYTHING. He knew if he said anything wrong to Congress it would not be the same answers the SC would get. He still gonna lose his law license…traitor!

Obama deserves more credit than Trump for the good economy, Americans say in a new poll http://bit.ly/2E45Mug
Of course. And that especially is true about the steep drop in Black unemployment. Trump has done nothing to help our economy and his tax bill may actually end up harming it by bring in less revenue for the federal government.
TRUMP’S PLAN TO WHITEWASH BARACK OBAMA’S LEGITIMACY AND LEGACY
…By ceaselessly playing to his resentful base, Trump has quite forgotten to notice that they make up only a percentage of the United States, and that this painful slight will be remembered for generations. The only wall he’s building is a wall against time. …

For those of you who may be fans, Hugh Masekela just passed. I remember this great song from the anti-Apartheid movement. May he R.I.P. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG3oKb2JQow
How, may he rest in peace. I will never forget hearing Grazing in the grass during the summer of 1968.
Hard to get through this video. Just completely heartbreaking to witness unspeakable stupidity and cruelty.
New post.
