Thanks for a New Post, NW.
Just saw a tweeter post saying that There’s a Deal in Congress. I am still looking for more back up. How much did #Dems give in?
In the year since Trumpâs inauguration, most analysts tend to agree on this: The economy remains essentially the same sturdy one he inherited from Barack Obama. https://t.co/i6XCahL9nn
President Obama inherited a horrible economy from Trump and turned it around. Trump has done nothing to deserve any credit for the booming economy. If anything, his tax cuts could sink it again.
I understant, Pkayden. This Trump regime, which blatantly lies everyday, makes me so angry as well. What makes me even more furious are the Trump sycophants who repeat the right wing propaganda mantra being peddled by their âdear Leader.â

It’s right out of the white supremacist playbook, that Miller and Kelly are driving from the Oval Office:
1. Stop POC from immigrating to the US
2. Deport the “illegals”
3. Implement policy and strip civil rights to decimate American-born POC communities
They don’t care about the ramifications – they want a white, authoritarian police state.
We MUST flip Congress in 2018 if we can, take as many state elections as possible, and also hope that Mueller’s investigation can produce indictments and erode some of the foundation from Trump’s administration in the meantime.
Amen to your entire comment. The key is flipping both the House and the Senate. That will put a stop to Trump’s agenda for the next two years until he can either be removed via Mueller’s investigation or be replaced by a Democratic President.

Absolutely not, Sheila. Neither one of the three branches of government has the Constitutional power to âpostpone an election. I suppose, theoretically, Congress can pass a bill that, with the President signature, can become a law that mandates the postponed of an election. But I am sure the Courts, including the SCOTUS, would promptly declare such a law to be Unconstitutional. After all elections were held during times when this nation was facing more severe crises, such as the Civil War, the Great Depression, World War II and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Only the deluded conspiracy theorists, both on the right and the left, are fond of pushing the false idea that elections can be postponed by a president, Congress or the Supreme Court. I doubt that elections can be postponed, unless of course, we have a military coup that decides to suspend the Constitution and declares its allegiance to Donald Trump

Four days ago, the New York Times reported a terrifying story: Scott Pruittâs EPA has hired two Republican political research firms to investigate and expose EPA employees who disagree with Trump and Pruittâs hard-right agenda.
This is a political witch hunt straight from Nixonâs old playbook. Within days of voicing their opinion, EPA employees who had attended rallies, spoke at private events, or simply wrote letters were sent requests from a lawyer for any emails that even âmentioned either Mr. Pruitt or President Trump.â
This kind of political intimidation of regular Americans is INEXCUSABLE â but itâs only the beginning of Trump and Pruittâs political war on science. Pruittâs allies in at least ten state legislatures have proposed gutting school science curricula, promoted anti-vaccine conspiracy theories, passed bills denying basic facts about climate change, and much more.
We have to stand up against lawmakers ANYWHERE who follow Scott Pruittâs anti-science agenda. Quick, add your name now to demand Scott Pruitt bring balance back to the Environmental Protection Agency >>
So disappointed that Senate Republicans just objected to me asking to pay our military and guarantee death benefits for military families. This should be something we can all agree on. Will be on @CNN to discuss why in a minute. Hope you'll tune in.

It would be simple to respond that this is because the president himself is also a far-right white nationalist-âwhich is to a large extent true. But thereâs more to it. Donald Trumpâs racism is born of ignorance: his views on racial issues are stuck in the 1970s-era pages of the New York Post, and his views on international relations more resemble clash-of-civilizations ethno-nationalist war games than anything resembling reality. But the presidentâs understanding of any issueâeven his signature onesâis paper thin. Heâs also susceptible to being persuaded by the very last person he talked to, and liable to change his mind with maddening frequency.
……………………………..
The president cannot make a deal on his own terms when he doesnât even know what those terms are. The extremist march of the Republican Congress and the inability of its leadership to stand up to its worst elements means that without the presidentâs leadership, the radical Freedom Caucus controls the House. Ultra-conservative zealot Tom Cotton functionally runs the Senate. Within the White House, blood-and-soil racists like Stephen Miller dominate the conversation, and Chief of Staff John Kelly appears to be much in agreement. So much so, that Kelly was passing out a hardline memo of White House demand that Trump had apparently never seen and did not agree with.
Needless to say, this is not what the American people voted for. Itâs not even what most of Trumpâs supporters voted for. Yes, racial hostility was a key component of Trumpâs appeal. But even Trumpâs ugly campaign of white supremacy was more nuanced than todayâs Republican embrace of pure ethnic cleansing. Trump promised to build a border wall, yes, but he also committed to protecting Dreamers, and his rhetoric around deportations was centered around âgetting rid of the bad hombres.â Even many of Trumpâs supporters would not have gone along with mass deportations of children and immigrants with no criminal record. And we know that Trump himself even very recently was supportive of making a deal on DACA.
Which means that White House policy is now far to the right of even the nasty virulence of Trumpâs presidential campaign, simply because the president is not the president. A small band of unelected ultra-racist extremists is presiding in his absence.
Needless to say, this is not what the American people voted for. Itâs not even what most of Trumpâs supporters voted for. Yes, racial hostility was a key component of Trumpâs appeal.
I would disagree…This is exactly what 62 million folks voted for..
So Democrats SHOULD NEVER meet with the man in the WH to discuss ANYTHING & ABSOLUTELY NO DEALS since he does not make decisions on ANYTHING! They need to talk to McConnell & Ryan and negotiate with them ONLY.
We’re talking about AT LEAST FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS!!
THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW 1/19/18 Trump admin ducking accountability on inaugural slush fund
Fredreka Schouten, campaign finance reporter for USA Today, talks with Rachel Maddow about the Trump administration’s evasiveness on what it did with the extra millions of dollars raised for the Trump inauguration that were not spent.
THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW 1/19/18 Terrifying reality for children’s health is a game in Congress
Rachel Maddow points out that while Republicans are trying to use funding of the Children’s Health Insurance Program as a bargaining tool, millions of American children are losing vital health insurance.
Indeed, I continue to wonder if activism of this scope, and on this scale, is an underappreciated national story. In 2010, if a few dozen guys with tea bags and tricorn hats got together in a park, it was seen as an important development. Nearly eight years later, news consumers are treated to âTrump voters still like Trumpâ stories with unsettling frequency â as if supporters of a historically unpopular president are the constituency that deserves the most attention right now.
But whether those who marched over the weekend are able to keep the spotlight or not, the fact remains that the Womenâs Marches represent some of the most impressive political activism in a generation.
After last yearâs events, I said, âThe political world may be frequently jaded and cynical about the electorateâs whims, but Saturdayâs marches and rallies demanded attention. To look past them is to ignore a brewing backlash of national significance.â A year later, that backlash is bigger, louder, and hopefully more intimidating for those who stand in their way.
Chuck Schumer has been huddled with all Senate Democrats for an HOUR to talk about how theyâll vote on plan to reopen the government but without strong assurances about how immigration and DACA will go. Vote will be called at noon
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham finally said out loud what many legislators are saying behind closed doors.
Senator Graham: “As long as Steven Miller is in charge of negotiating immigration we are going no where. Heâs been an outlier for years.â pic.twitter.com/6aR42Jeiu7
â Alan He (@alanhe) January 21, 2018
The reason there will be no agreement as long as Miller is in charge of negotiations is because he is holding Dreamers hostage in order to force changes to legal immigration. He made that clear during a meeting last fall that he arranged with people from Breitbart.
Millerâs goal on this occasion was to sell the group on a compromise: a possible deal offering protections to the young undocumented immigrants known as âdreamersâ in exchange for tougher immigration provisions, such as an end to family-sponsored migrationâŚ
âBe a possible âyes,â be open to doing something that makes you very uncomfortable on DACA in exchange for substantive structural reforms that may have been out of reach,â a senior White House official said, summarizing Millerâs pitch on the condition of anonymity to share details of a private moment. âThatâs the whole game.â
@sendems must stand firm….the GOP will NEVER AGREE TO PASS THE DREAM ACT…They will use these negotiations as a way to limit immigration of blk & brn people..and to step up their Gestapo-like tactics against undocumented immigrants of color!..#StandFirm
Kamala Harris: âListen, Iâm disappointed with a conversation that suggests a false choice, you either fund the government or you take care of these DACA kids,â Harris says. âWe can do both.â

GA, TODbots.
Once again, Dems do what they do best, Weak and Kneeling.
The government shut down is the second Trump trap that @SenSchumer walked right into. The first was the Roger Stone/FOX set up job on Al Franken. Itâs one thing to feel strongly about an issue, but you only help Trump if you do something foolish because of it.
That was my first thought too, but after reading Joy Reid, Al Giordano, Eric Boehlert, Nate Cohenâs takes on this, Iâve calmed down. If the deal is what they say it is CHIP is now off the table, this program get funding for 6 years (so those kids are no longer hostages) and we use the next 3 weeks to push for DACA and real immigration reform. Theyâre playing long game politics here. Itâs a bumpy, messy ride, but worth it.
Important note: the #TrumpShutdown is now over. The next date to put in your calendar is February 8th. The moderates who put this deal together are now on the hook to make a good deal, and the extremists don't have the CHIP kids to take as hostages next time (and for six years.)
Fair question. But since Trump is completely out of the picture, the answer to that is a deal that can get north of 66 votes. It would have to be a pretty generous deal to get that many Democrats to sign on.
so called moderate sen dems will not lose their credibility …this voting was part of a strategy….good cop /bad cop…why are we so quick to abandon Dems https://t.co/p1W9qHQLjY
Here's one way to think about it: are Dems better positioned now than on Thursday? I'd argue yes. –Have a promise on DACA vote. Their GOP doesn't do it. If it passes, that's good for Ds too. –No loss of leverage v. Thurs., since just 3 week CR. Can go shutdown route again
IMO, it was never credible to argue that the GOP would just concede on DACA. They never had an exit strategy. Getting out quickly with any concession is good for them, given that their position was mediocre
The better question is who is in a better position now? Dems gave NOTHING. And now are set up with vote on DACA, chip passed, and worst case in 3 weeks same position now. And Rs know Ds will shutdown govt too
Debt ceiling coming up, CHIP kids aren't a bargaining chip (ha) any longer Some R's in Senate seem sincere about DACA… not McConnell, of course – but he can't lead a caucus with no confidence in his word & sure could come to that. Plus Kelly/Miller reveal is leverage
The Dems got a commitment for an open-ended debate on imm. reform including protecting Dreamers, as condition for funding govt. And they got CHIP extended 6 years. How's this not a win? Immigration reform never should've been tied to funding govt – that it was is a Dem win.
Adding that I know you know that :), but just for anyone who wants to go in on the Dems for ‘caving’, we are at the point with the GOP where this is a hostage negotiation with terrorists.
for 8 fucking years, the thugs didn’t give an inch and won, both politically and policy wise at every level and at every state. at what point does the dem establishment learn their tactics? it’s no more fucking deja vu.
Midterms are coming. More pressure on GOP House members with every seat on the ballot. They're going to paint themselves into a no-win racist corner on this.
I hope you are correct. Other folks smarter than me on this issue write similarly. I don't trust the GOP or McConnell/Ryan to not pull some shenanigans and laugh at the Dems while they do it. A lot of people who will endure real life pain are counting on the Dems.
Not a winner for anyone, especially our military! Repub will continue to blame Dems no matter what. DO NOT TRUST McConnell. He is the bottom of the immoral barrel.
With you on that, Dudette! I recall President Obama would borrow the phrase, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good,” quite often! Sometimes a tough pill to swallow in individual cases, but, nevertheless, a valuable lesson.
Breaking news: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court said the state's congressional map was so partisan it violated the state's constitution. Map is blocked for 2018 and they want it redrawn ahead of the primary.
Profoundly consequential win against partisan gerrymandering
BREAKING: Top executives at the Board of Directors for USA Gymnastics finally resign. It only took 100 victims speaking at Nassar's sentencing hearing. About 60 more victims are scheduled to talk. https://t.co/UPbekOjUbW
Texas keeps records of voters with Hispanic names so they can mail them bilingual election notices. NOT so that Kobach and crew can try to suppress their votes https://t.co/X8Oemj9Hhl
Oh and the voting commission staffer that made the request is the same staffer who was arrested last October on child pornography charges https://t.co/QsVZjIcMyI
So as I understand it, Dems gave Trump 3 weeks in return for promise of a vote on DACA; also got 6 years of CHIP funding. I understand the concerns of immigration activists, but this doesn't sound like a surrender, unless I'm missing something
Govt opens for 3 wks. Lots of people need that. When it shuts down again Feb 8, there wonât 9 million CHIP kids held hostage. They can focus on immigration, opiods, vet benefits, etc. Will have better leverage to negotiate if Turtle renegs. Iâm hoping thatâs how it works. Whatâs the alternative? Dig in deeper and hurt everyone longer & harder?
I get it…. But McConnell has zero intention of keeping his word. He’ll blame his flipflop on Trump, and there won’t even be a debate. And Dems will look all look stupid for taking Mitch at his word. Or I could be wrong. I would LOVE to be wrong.
Meanwhile, 9 kids get their health insurance, a bunch more people get their paychecks and the politics continues as we know it will until we take back the Congress.
Keep in mind they’re all about to go to prison. Mitch & Ryan knowingly took Russian laundered money, (probably from more than just the NRA), then distributed it all the way down the ticket… to incriminate all of them, so they’d be able to control their party via blackmail, which seems to be working.
Liar .@SenateMajLdr McConnell says it’s his “intention” to bring up an immigration bill. The use of the word “intention” doesn’t denote/connote a commitment. If that liar had said, He *shall* bring up an immigration bill, that would be a commitment. McConnell tricked Senate Dems again.
I’m personally terrified, because cornered people turn into cornered animals to survive. Hence the GOP adding a poison pill to the CR to not fun our Intelligence Community – so now the GOP are adding yet another venue attempting to shutdown Mueller’s investigation.
I hear you. Iâm just counting on Senate Dems to have a strategy and will do what they can to counter the fascists. That and keeping up the pressure seems pretty much all we have, short of violent insurrection.
I agree. I left comments upthread before I got to this!
But the Dems are truly negotiating with domestic terrorists at this point. And I have to believe they know full well what an unscrupulous obstructionist and traitor McConnell is.

Stephen Millerâs Plan Has Always Been to Hold the Dreamers Hostage
by Nancy LeTourneau
January 22, 2018
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham finally said out loud what many legislators are saying behind closed doors.
The reason there will be no agreement as long as Miller is in charge of negotiations is because he is holding Dreamers hostage in order to force changes to legal immigration. He made that clear during a meeting last fall that he arranged with people from Breitbart.
UGH. This makes me sick.
me too, meta. I feared this, I cannot imagine the horror 800,000 Dreamers & their loved ones are going through. Who can they even trust anymore?
Kamala Harris is not pleased.
gdamnit Van Hollen & Cardin gave in?
I Think that we should see this as strategy…good cop / bad cop
I really hope so Sheila. I’m trying to think positive on this & believe dems won’t give up on our Dreamers.
GA, TODbots.
Once again, Dems do what they do best, Weak and Kneeling.
what amazes me is how fast we all turn on the DEMS…this reminds me of the left turning on President Omama at perceived weakness
I agree Sheila, There is strategy in this but the Dems really have no power. We have to get what we can.
And the bottom line, Dudette, is:
Democrats need to give their Congress a VETO-PROOF, FILIBUSTER-PROOF majority.
That’s the only way Dems can quit having to sweat out whatever damage or hostage-taking the GOP decides to inflict next.
Adding that I know you know that :), but just for anyone who wants to go in on the Dems for ‘caving’, we are at the point with the GOP where this is a hostage negotiation with terrorists.
Agreed.
for 8 fucking years, the thugs didn’t give an inch and won, both politically and policy wise at every level and at every state. at what point does the dem establishment learn their tactics? it’s no more fucking deja vu.
I do not think it is a matter of trust..they do not trust McConnell……i think the DEMS have a strategy…good cop/bad cop…we shall see how it turns out
Yep
With you on that, Dudette! I recall President Obama would borrow the phrase, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good,” quite often! Sometimes a tough pill to swallow in individual cases, but, nevertheless, a valuable lesson.
YESSSSSS!!
Which is all AWESOME.
I just don’t think we’re going to take back anything if the election is still connected to the internet/electricity in any way.
… and this. Much work remains to restore democracy and keep it.
Keep in mind they’re all about to go to prison. Mitch & Ryan knowingly took Russian laundered money, (probably from more than just the NRA), then distributed it all the way down the ticket… to incriminate all of them, so they’d be able to control their party via blackmail, which seems to be working.
McConnell & Ryan are dangerous AF.
This too.
Senate Dems know Turtle is a liar. The game is called politics. Get some popcorn. Itâs gonna be a bumpy ride.
BooooooooooooooooooooooM!…..
and the strategy is good cop / bad cop!!!!
Durbin voted Yes….and has been the loudest voice for the dream act….like yu said…strategy
I’m personally terrified, because cornered people turn into cornered animals to survive. Hence the GOP adding a poison pill to the CR to not fun our Intelligence Community – so now the GOP are adding yet another venue attempting to shutdown Mueller’s investigation.
What’s next, Martial Law?
FUND. NOT FUND. FFS…. I need sleep.
Lucy + Football = Charlie Brown.
Megyn Kelly is a bobble headed dummy and belongs back on fake noise. I wonder how long NBC will keep her on while her show remains in the sub-basement below the dirt floor.
New post.
