Former Auburn standout and NBA Hall-Of-Famer Charles Barkley will be joining Democratic Senate nominee Doug Jones at his final campaign rally in Birmingham Monday night.

Barkley previously told NBC News that if he still lived in Alabama he would vote for Jones due to Republican Senate nominee Roy Moore’s work with Breitbart’s Steve Bannon. Bannon is scheduled to appear with Moore at a rally in Midland City tonight

      GE Meta.

Goodness, not a good Autumn for members of the Quest family!

First your in-laws in the Santa Rosa area, and now the record-breaking #ThomasFire — which is truly mind-boggling. The firefighters really have their hands full because of the dense old-growth chaparral, the rugged terrain (the steep canyons act as “chimneys,” propelling the fire even faster than the horrific Santa Anas.

Heard a firefighter on the radio yesterday who said he’d been doing this work for 32 years and didn’t recall a Santa Ana wind event lasting week — and I can’t either — they usually last 1-3 days, but never a straight week, like now. Our weather’s heating up now too — close to 80F today, and forecast the same through the end of the week.:(

I’m about mid-way between the location of the photographer and the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, so am very familiar with this view. Is your cousin in Ventura or Santa Barbara County?

I checked out the photographer’s Twitter account, and was grateful to see the original San Buenaventura city hall still stands (it’s a stone’s throw from Mission San Buenaventura, the last one consecrated by Junipero Serra. The Mission’s website says the original structure succumbed to fire 😦 ).

Here’s pic of San Buenaventura City Hall:

          Good news!

Fillmore is just north of me, at the trailhead for the Sespe (California Condor) Sanctuary trail — the wind is blowing relentlessly from the north and east, so the endangered areas are between the fire and the ocean, and also points north as that’s where the fuel (chaparral) is:

For those wondering why the polls vary so much for Alabama Senate election tomorrow, it sounds like a lot has to do with cell phone vs. landline phone surveys. (I know we all get exasperated at Nate Silver for his “both sides” stance in much of his writing, but I think it’s helpful to see how the polls can be so wildly different.)

    From the article:
“Automated polls are prohibited by law from calling voters on cellphones.”

“Issue No. 1, not calling cellphones, is potentially a major problem: The Fox News poll found Jones leading by 30 points among people who were interviewed by cellphone. Slightly more than half of American adults don’t have access to a landline, according to recent estimates by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which also found a higher share of mobile-only households in the South than in other parts of the country. Moreover, voters with landline service are older than the voting population as a whole and are more likely to be white — characteristics that correlate strongly with voting Republican, especially in states such as Alabama.”

Several influential figures responsible for creating the internet have demanded that a controversial vote to be cancelled.

This week the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will decide on whether to repeal an Obama-era law that protects “net neutrality”.

It refers to the principle that all traffic on the internet is treated equally.

The pioneers said the FCC did not know what it was doing.

“It is important to understand that the FCC’s proposed Order is based on a flawed and factually inaccurate understanding of internet technology,” the open letter read.

Signees included several of the architects of the early internet and world wide web, such as Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee, along with Steve Wozniak, the Apple co-founder.

The letter calls for the vote, due to be held on 14 December, to be cancelled due to what the authors regard as a lack of transparency and a refusal to listen to critics of the plan.

“The FCC’s rushed and technically incorrect proposed Order to abolish net neutrality protections without any replacement is an imminent threat to the internet we worked so hard to create,” the letter states. “It should be stopped.”

    • 98 arapaho415
      December 12, 2017 at 2:27 am

      GM Sheila.

See upthread for an explanation as to why poll results have been all over the map between Jones vs. Moore.

My personal opinion is that the election results may hinge on Alabama voter suppression.

Despite national spotlight and good weather (no rain or snow in forecast), it’s still going to be a low-turnout election. 😦

This tweet is a bit misleading… the “‘biggest in a generation” is a statement from Jones’ spokesman Sebastian Kitchen.

      From the article:

“Election day is Tuesday and voters are getting fired up.

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, the state’s top elections official, said Monday morning that he expects about 25 percent of registered voters to cast ballots in the state’s Senate election between Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Roy Moore.

While that can also be viewed as 75 percent of state voters passing on the election, Merrill has increased expected voter turnout by more than 33 percent over the past two weeks. He previously said he expected only about 18 percent of registered voters to cast ballots.

It would also mark a higher turnout than the 18 percent who turned out for the Senate primaries in August.”

      Also from the article:
“Jones, meanwhile, has been in front of voters at events almost daily for weeks. According to data from his campaign, Jones has attended more than 227 events over the past two months and traveled more than 8,100 miles. Campaign volunteers have made more than 1.2 million phone calls to voters in the last seven weeks and the campaign has knocked on more than 300,000 doors during the last seven weeks, including more than 80,000 last weekend.”

Background on insidious Alabama voter suppression — article is from 2 years ago, Oct 2015:

      • 100 arapaho415
        December 12, 2017 at 3:55 am

Excerpt from the Oct 2015 article:

“Facing a budget crisis, Alabama has shuttered 31 driver’s license offices, many of them in counties with a high proportion of black residents. Coming after the state recently put into effect a tougher voter ID law, the closures will cut off access — particularly for minorities — to one of the few types of IDs accepted.

According to a tally by AL.com columnist John Archibald, eight of the 10 Alabama counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters saw their driver’s license offices closed.

‘Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one,’ Archibald wrote.

Archibald also noted that many of the counties where offices were closed also leaned Democrat.”

And yes, for those old enough to remember the 1970s (that horrible decade), it’s hard not to think back to when Harvey Milk and George Moscone were assassinated. As I recall (and Wikipedia confirms) George Moscone was a household name in California politics then, having considered a run for Governor in 1974. 😦

I just have a fear that as my son gets older and starts to hang out at friend’s house the parents might own guns and the kids might get a hold of it and play with it.

No. I don’t think you are wrong. It’s better to have the information so you can decide if you want him to go or not. It should give the parents the opportunity to explain how they store their firearms, if indeed they have them. Then you can decide whether you want him to go there or not.
