      GM Dr. Bob.

That photograph looks like it could have been taken above downtown Ventura, California (sometime before today, unfortunately).

Today’s #ThomasFire hit close to home because I live in eastern Ventura County, and I’ve lived in the city of Ventura — which has perfect weather (seems like it’s always 75F there, both in Summer and Winter) and the quaint old town section is sleepy compared to many other areas in Southern California.

Here’s the view from my neck of the woods this morning (that’s smoke, not fog 😦 ):

Here’s a comparison that your photograph reminded me of:

      And today:

The State Department is reportedly warning U.S. embassies around the world to tighten security ahead of a possible announcement on the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital by President Trump on Wednesday.

Politico reports that State Department officials are worried Trump’s possible declaration could lead to violence targeting U.S. embassies and diplomatic staff.

“The impending Jerusalem announcement has me very worried about the possibility of violent responses that could affect embassies,” a State Department official told the news outlet. “I hope I’m wrong.”

The U.S. currently recognizes Tel Aviv as Israel’s capital, and the U.S. embassy is located there. Under a 1995 law, the president must recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital or make a declaration every six months that such a move would harm U.S. national security interests.

    Matthew Cole, Jeremy Scahill
    December 4 2017, 9:24 p.m

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION is considering a set of proposals developed by Blackwater founder Erik Prince and a retired CIA officer — with assistance from Oliver North, a key figure in the Iran-Contra scandal — to provide CIA Director Mike Pompeo and the White House with a global, private spy network that would circumvent official U.S. intelligence agencies, according to several current and former U.S. intelligence officials and others familiar with the proposals. The sources say the plans have been pitched to the White House as a means of countering “deep state” enemies in the intelligence community seeking to undermine Trump’s presidency.

“Pompeo can’t trust the CIA bureaucracy, so we need to create this thing that reports just directly to him,” said a former senior U.S. intelligence official with firsthand knowledge of the proposals, in describing White House discussions. “It is a direct-action arm, totally off the books,” this person said, meaning the intelligence collected would not be shared with the rest of the CIA or the larger intelligence community. “The whole point is this is supposed to report to the president and Pompeo directly.”

      GM/GA rikyrah.

I am obsessed with this news, and am collecting as much information about all the tendrils of malice, corruption, and overpaid American oligarchs which tie this story together. This will take some time, unfortunately.

IMHO, the impetus for this horrifying turn of events is American’s LOVE OF GUNS and MONEY. We’re now in GWB Adm-level of rendition, tortures and “missing persons” who don’t agree with #Trumpistan, our current authoritarian state.

As I collect more information I will share it here, but first let’s start with Ryan Zinke’s background (he is the glue holding this together, and the catalyst, along with Betsy DeVos’ brother Erik Prince).

In 2012, Zinke was Neil Livingstone’s running mate for Montana Governor:

    GM TODville.

Cannot believe I woke up to the news of the wildfire that is threatening downtown Ventura CA — I’m so nervous now, and having a hard time finding maps to show you, to give you a sense of what a human and HISTORICAL disaster this is.

Google and Twitter search are failing me, no doubt because this fire EXPLODED in size during our wee hours, and the WINDS have been howling since early yesterday morning.

To the south and east, nothing to stop this fire except the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Santa Barbara may be in trouble too.

(I’m in no danger from this fire — who knows about what will happen until the fierce Santa Ana winds subside, which is forecast on Thursday or so 😦 ).

Will update as I get more info, but here’s what I’ve gathered so far:

I’m feeling better than I did this morning, waking up to the news of the #ThomasFire.

The wind is actually beginning to calm down a bit (still gusty Santa Ana winds, but not as unrelenting as yesterday and last night).

Now that the sun’s up and the fire looks to no longer burn to the ocean via downtown Ventura, it looks like the worst has passed — still lots of damage already done — but the situation in Ventura County seems less dire than at daybreak.

Posted some before/after photos in response to Bobfr upthread (and a view of what it looks like in my neck of the woods).

Good roundup by @latimes (fire began near hiking trail at 6:30 pm yesterday — potential arson, maybe? Cannot tell you how much I loathe people who think it would be fun to light a fire in the chaparral on the windiest day of the year).

And this is what leads me to believe the worst is over — if this person was able to get to this park overlooking downtown Ventura (before and after tweets posted upthread in response to Bobfr):

          • December 5, 2017 at 1:22 pm

I’m so glad and relieved to hear you think things are getting better. I surely hope so. I’d really hate to see this horrible situation for Californians worsen. I’ll keep everyone in my thoughts.

Race Bannon had his set of lies about the Flynn mess set up because of the old lies that Dolt45 told. Now that they’re trying to change the narrative of the Flynn mess, with regards to Dolt45, that makes Pence’s lies obsolete. They went around trying to protect Dolt45, and Pence is left out on the branch alone.

Trump lawyers change defense on collusion and obstruction
Rachel Maddow points out that Donald Trump’s lawyers’ arguments about Trump’s legal liability in the Russia scandal have changed from denying Trump’s actions to excusing them as not illegal. Also noted is that Mike Pence’s lies about Mike Flynn need a new explanation.

    Republicans Broke Congress. Now What?
    by Nancy LeTourneau
    December 5, 2017

Over the weekend Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein took their assertion about asymmetric polarization one step further and wrote, “How the Republicans Broke Congress.” They pointed to three steps in the process:

First, beginning in the 1990s, the Republicans strategically demonized Congress and government more broadly and flouted the norms of lawmaking, fueling a significant decline of trust in government that began well before the financial collapse in 2008, though it has sped up since…

Second, there was the “Obama effect”…we saw a deliberate Republican strategy to oppose all of his initiatives and frame his attempts to compromise as weak or inauthentic. The Senate under the majority leader Mitch McConnell weaponized the filibuster to obstruct legislation, block judges and upend the policy process…

Third, we have seen the impact of significant changes in the news media, which had a far greater importance on the right than on the left.

Now that Conyers has retired, when should we expect Franken to retire. And where is the groundswell for Franken to leave? I’m sick and fucking tired of black politicians being held to a different standard, it’s not fair at all. Pelosi pushed for Conyers to leave, is she going to have that same conviction and push for Franken to leave?

    • 113 Mtmarilyn2

Why do you want Franken to leave?

      • 114 Don
        December 5, 2017 at 11:26 am

Franken has said out of his own mouth that he has made mistakes. How can we dismiss what Franken did and not Conyers? What is so special about Franken that we want him to stay after multiple women have come forward and accused Franken of misbehavior? Franken himself has apologized for his behavior. Kevin Spacey is in my top five favorite actors of all time, but he had to go because of his behavior. We can’t go after Moore for his behavior and look the other way when it comes to Franken’s behavior.

        • 115 Mtmarilyn2
          December 5, 2017 at 12:53 pm

Have you read the letters all the women who have worked or are currently working for Franken have written. The wome who have accused Franken are just a one time situation each nothing on going. Franken has asked for an investigation. That should go ahead. There is a big difference in all theses cases. We can’t just lump them all as the same. They are going after Joy Reid for something she wrote 10years ago. We have to be careful.

        • 116 0388jojothecat
          December 5, 2017 at 2:33 pm

Conyers is 88 yrs old, held meetings in his underwear and pajamas. He was accused of sexual harassment and paid her out of his own funds. Franken’s situation is much different. The behavior was not of being unclothed and asking for sex and creating a hostile workplace. This is a matter of putting his hands where they should not be while taking a picture. Conyers appears to have dementia and it is time for him to step down. He has done a lot of good and his legacy should not be tarnished any further.

Federal law caps some federal employees’ premium pay and permits agencies to recover money paid in excess of the maximum from future paychecks. FEMA says the extraordinary year of hurricanes, wildfires and other disasters means it may have to take that step.

“This year’s unprecedented hurricane season led to a record-setting length of national activation,” the agency said in an emailed statement. “Due to the extended work hours involved in supporting disaster recovery and response efforts for multiple storms, some employees have been affected by the annual maximum earnings limitation.”
