Yesterday I had lunch with my brother in law who is visiting from IA. At 70 years old, he is thinking of running for something, he was thinking the state legislature but I urged him to consider the US House, particularly if his rep does not have a challenger. In any event, I am happy to see he is thinking of getting involved.
The Senate vote last night is reprehensible. I am far less optimistic than some here, I believe if they cannot reach consensus the House simply will pass the Senate version. These people have no principles as they have demonstrated time after time and there quest for a tax cut is never ending. The only thing we can do is hold it over their heads day after day in the next year. But many will be hurt by these actions, and some will die after losing their healthcare.
For me, I cannot help but be focused on the big picture. In short, we are NOT equipped to hand the likes of Trump as has been amply demonstrated. And he will feel further empowered with this tax win. I simply do not believe we have any idea what this country will look like two years from now. There are no mechanisms in place to force him to do his job such as implementing the sanctions passed by Congress when you have a Congress that is spineless. And as demonstrated with the CFPB debacle we can no longer rely on the courts as more and more Trump appointed judges take the bench. While I believe that ruling in Trump’s favor will be overturned on appeal, it will take time and there is much damage that can be done by Mulvaney in the interim. In the past, I ultimately believed the American people would do the right thing but that illusion fell by the wayside last November.
So I will keep working and calling, but with far less hope than I’ve had in the past. And i will continue to come here for my daily respite:-) Thanks to everyone who posts wonderful photos of PBO and Michelle!
